Join nowForm 1096 is showing that we filed more 1099 than what we actually filed. I can only see 4 1099s that I printed for my records but the 1096 shows 9 and is listing some vendors that do not qualify for a 1099. How do I fix the 1096?
Thanks for visiting the QuickBooks Community, @cfarner. I'd like to ensure that we're on the same page, so I can provide you with the right amount of information about fixing 1096 forms.
Can you please provide us with additional information about how you generate the 1096 forms in QuickBooks Online?
Also, would you please include some screenshots so I can get a better view of it and share the best solution with you?
I'd appreciate any additional details that you can provide so I can help you out. I'll be keeping an eye out for your response to this.
Thank you for sending over that screenshot of the 1096 form, cfarner. I see what you mean about the additional vendors being included in the 1099-NEC recipient count and totals.
It looks like the other vendors were included in the calculation for the number of 1099 NEC. If you take a look at the total amount reported at the bottom page ($152685.68), it's the exact amount for all payments made to all 1099 NEC vendors who meet the threshold.
The vendor's name might have been checked in the Review recipients and payment totals page when you were filing the forms. This would result in them being counted toward the number of 1099-NEC forms and were included in the submission.
You can submit a corrected 1096/1099 return in QuickBooks Online to fix this issue. Here is an article that provides steps on how to correct or change submitted 1099 forms: Correct or change 1099s in QuickBooks.
Please let me know if you need any other assistance getting those 1096/1099 forms re-filed accurately, cfarner. I'm happy to help walk through the process of submitting corrections.
Just to clarify I only see 4 1099s being filed with the IRS. The ones missing information were not included prepared but included in the 1096. I only need to amend the 1096?
I appreciate the additional information you've shared, @cfarner. I'm here to share further details about the contractors showing in your 1096 form in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
1096 summarizes all of your contractors that qualify to submit a 1099. Since it shows the other contractors in your 1096, I recommend referring to your accountant or to a tax officer for advice on handling this.
Additionally, you can also run a 1099 report to see which contractors need 1099s

@cfarner Did you find a resolution to this? I also have the same issue. I keep finding articles about correcting the 1099s but not the 1096.
have you found a resolution to this?
No. I have not. I read somewhere that when filing online the 1096 doesn't get filed but I'm not sure if that is a correct statement.
Let me share some further details regarding the matter at hand, cfarner.
To begin with, I would like to inform you that 1096 is a summary of all contractors who qualify to submit a 1099 form. If you see other contractors on your 1096 form, it is recommended that you submit a corrected 1096 return in QuickBooks Online to fix this issue.
The correction process for the 1096 form would depend on the nature of the correction that needs to be made. Therefore, it is advisable to consult the IRS or a tax professional for guidance on how to proceed with the correction process. The IRS provides instructions for corrections to the 1096 form, which you can find by visiting the following link: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-dft/f1096--dft.pdf. This will help you understand the process better.
In addition to this, you can also run a 1099 report to see which contractors require 1099s. This will help you ensure that all contractors are accounted for and that there are no discrepancies in the 1096 form.
