This does not work because there is only expenses listed in the dropdown list. The prepayment of sales tax would be a prepayment on the balance sheet or allow us to offset the liability for the sales tax on the balance sheet.
What in the actual ef Quickbooks.... I just got switched to quarterly fillings with prepayments and just learning there is no option for this... Wow what a fail.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention, BBeach.
Your current method for recording and adjusting sales taxes on prepayments may be outdated. Let me offer you the latest instructions for this process.

Wow. In the great words of Jacobim Mugatu, "I feel like I'm taking crazy pills."
Here we are FIVE years beyond this initial post/concern/plea-for-an-actual-SOLVE, and yet, nothing. And each QB rep just repeats the same "solve" as the rep one year prior and so on.
The issues still remain in March of 2024 - There is no way to immediately and accurately record a prepayment for us CDTFA prepayment filers. (not without a completely UNNECESSARY amount of "work-around" and additional time taken that should not be) It seems like a simple software update, but here we still are ....
No, the suggestions above do NOT work, as they ADD to the tax liability, not subtract, as others have already mentioned. Also, would not properly match up to the correct tax account and post correctly. Also, I myself did not see where to "RECORD" this payment beyond adding the adjustment. It just stayed open (assuming I can only "record" at the beginning of April (I'm working on the first quarter here, and trying to post my February payment), which echos the concern of others that I can't clear this payment until April?? - unacceptable, QuickBooks. We pay a lot each and every month for a service that should WORK for us.
Fix this.

That doesn't work as intended. When you select prepayments as an adjustment and you put a dollar amount in there, it increases the amount of sale tax owe which is the exact opposite of what I need. I am trying to pay down my sale tax. I tried putting a negative number in there and it won't accept it. Also it makes me choose an account from a drop down list and none of which would be correct and wouldn't let me submit it without selecting a "wrong" account. All around this is broken and doesn't work for what we need it for.
What I have found as a work around for anywhere else in the same situation, you can change your Sales tax settings to monthly, then you can file a payment for whatever payment size you need or want, once that is filed and entered, change back to quarterly and it will show up as a payment under the quarterly statement as it should. Annoying but at least it's a solution that works.

AGREED - 1000% !!!
Also - one thing that's interesting... I think the 'support agent' replies we get here are AI. No human could be so ignorant of the true issues.
