I cannot even imagine how difficult this experience is, quinn. We appreciate your patience at this challenging time.
Upon checking, the investigation is still in progress. Rest assured that our Engineers are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible.
As a workaround, we can write a Check. Then, pull up a Sales Tax liability Report as a reference. It's important to remember that we have to choose the Sales tax to pay account when recording the sales tax.
Follow these steps to generate the Sales Tax Liability Report:
To write a check, we can:

Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with managing your sales tax in QuickBooks Online (QBO). Have a good one!
I'm also having a problem with the sales tax center as well. When I open the sales tax center I see the message "Sorry, and error occurred". I have tried Safari, Chrome, and Firefox (mac), cleared all cookies, and tried incognito or private mode. Support suggested that I run the migration to the new sales tax center, but that didn't solve the issue.
This seems to be a bigger issue affecting multiple customers. I will have to pay late fees and interest to the state if I don't pay my sales tax on time.
Thank you for adding a screenshot, teraauch.
I appreciate you for performing some troubleshooting steps to fix the error you encountered.

We appreciate your patience while we're working to have a permanent fix with regard this issue. I'm always around whenever you have tax concerns.
am have been having the same issue for over a month and Quickbooks continues to act like there is not a problem. When you chat or speak on the phone with anyone they have no idea what you're talking about and cannot help at all. It's obviously a bug that Quickbooks needs to fix... I am seeing other articles with users complaining about the same thing.
The work-around you provided does not fix the issue we’re having. We need to be able to record tax payments and balance them in Quickbooks. Cutting a check and paying the state sales tax is not the problem.
When can we expect this to be fixed. This functionality has been unavailable for this whole last quarter of the year. This is taking way too long for a service I’m paying for.
I have seen other changes in Quickbooks within this last quarter that have no major impact of bookkeeping or accounting, but the Sales Tax center is still down. Is Quickbooks even working on this?
I'll share updates about the investigation, @ikrayquinn.
I understand how frustrating it can be when you're unable to access the Sales Tax Center despite the workaround suggested by my colleague. At the moment, we have asked our Engineers to look into the issue of seeing "Give us a few minutes and try again" when accessing the Sales Tax Center''. While we haven’t resolved this unexpected behavior yet, rest assured that our Engineers are working diligently to fix it as quickly as possible.
In the meantime, I recommend reaching out to our Customer Support Team for the latest updates on the situation, ensuring that you can utilize the Sales Tax Center without any issues. For more details on how to reach them, see this article: QuickBooks Online Support.

Thanks for your understanding and patience while we look into this. Don't hesitate to leave a comment should you have any follow-up questions or concerns with your Sales Tax Center. I'll be glad to help. Stay safe.
Ditto over here. Since October 2023, I have needed to take extraordinary measures outside of Quickbooks to formulate accurate reports to file monthly sales taxes. Also, I have been unable to enter the sales tax amounts paid because of a system error. It has been burden.
I postulate the following to the Quickbooks engineers or to whom it may concern:
Why not restore or revert the tax center programming to August when there were no detrimental tax center issues, until you can debug the new? The current tax center state has resulted in significant adverse effects. With a new tax season quickly approaching, a different strategy may need serious consideration.
With only 3 days left in the Calendar Year it is imperative that this bug be fixed as soon as possible. We need to reconcile monthly, quarterly and annual accounts and without the ability to enter a sales tax payment all our account will be out of sync with all our bank and Department of Revenue account.
About a month ago we experienced this exact same problem. Support walked us through the process and suggested we utilize Edge as opposed to Chrome and it worked. Now neither browser works a month later.
If it was fixed, why is not working now?
Will the Sales Tax Center get fixed or is this the new way of recording it? I've been having this same issue "Sorry an error occurred" for 3 months.

I've been having the same problem as well. I've reported it and they act like they never heard of it before and then after an hour or so, they finally say "Oh, yeah, we will add you to the existing tickets and update you when there is progress". From past experiences, I know that'll never happen. The advice they told me is that the more people who report via the "Feedback" button under the Gear Icon, the more attention it'll get. So go to the Sales Tax Center and screen shot the page and then report feedback. Maybe if enough of us do it, they'll actually do something because, despite what person above says ... the engineers are certainly not working on this to resolve it quickly. It is insulting to even say that. Do they even test the software before a rollout?
Hi there! I wonder the same things. Scratching my head here. We are currently taking measures outside of Quickbooks to resolve the issues. All the best to you in 2024.
We are experiencing the exact same problem. Any answers yet? You may want to check to see if sales tax is being charged where it should be. I have a client where the whole month of December, customers marked taxable, with taxable sales, did not charge or collect sales tax-for the entire month! The client just caught it now. You may want to check, since this may be a bigger issue than realized.
We appreciate your participation, @pfeifferacct. Please know we understand the urgency of this matter and that this isn't the experience we'd want you to have when using QuickBooks.

I've been reporting this for almost 4 weeks - 3 phone calls and many "feedback" reports. I found that users have been having this issue for 3+ months. It is hard to believe that the engineers are actually working on this. Not being able to use the Sales Tax Center is disruptive to business. How did this ever get through testing in your organization. This needs to get fixed. Also, I was promised I would get updates via email on the status of this "investigation" - to date I have received exactly ZERO.
I regret to know that you're still experiencing this matter, ggarvin. Let me route you again to our support.

To IrizA and anyone at Quickbooks who might actually be listening-what ggarvin was saying is that they HAVE done all of that. So have I. This problem surfaced back in October. The point is, going through the usual channels has proven useless. This should be a priority. We're not talking about a report not printing the way we would like or something else trivial-we are talking about sales tax! You say it is a priority, but it doesn't really seem so, does it? We have reached out to tech support multiple times, each time we are told they are working on it. Come on Quickbooks, get your act together! It's always "one step forward, two steps back" I have been using QBO for years. This stuff used to get resolved in days, not months. I am on the same list as ggarvin, but zero updates, zero progress, zero fixes. Enough! Fix this problem! (possibly bump this up to the office of the president? -that seemed to help the last time we had an issue like this with payroll).
Couldn't agree more! No one seems to care in the entire organization.
same...they issued a work around to turn on automated sale tax...that didn't fix the issue so I undid the automated sales tax option and now i get an error message Give us a few minutes and try again. If it still doesn’t work, call us so we can take a closer look. This is absolutely unacceptable. We have had QB for years and the help the last couple years on this platform is horrible. They have really gone downhill. Any rep I speak to reads from a book how to fix issues and still cannot fix them.
This is the exact response I received from them on 1/5/2024. I DO NOT RECOMMEND YOU DO THIS>>>AS PER MY POST ABOVE IT MAKES ISSUES WORSE:
Dear Valued Customer,
Thank you for subscribing to our updates on Investigation Sales Tax - sorry an error occurred. We appreciate your patience while we have researched this scenario.
We have a workaround for you to resolve this issue. Please take a moment to make the switch to Automated Sales Tax:
While we are constantly evolving our products to provide you the best possible user experience, we do not anticipate a change to this product behavior in the immediate future.
This will be our final communication until something changes on this investigation. To be clear, we are not saying that engineering work has stopped in search of a resolution - if the status of the behavior changes, we will be sure to communicate that to you. While we work to find you a solution, we apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause you.
Mine brings up an error and I have been reporting this issue since the end of September. Every person I speak with tell me they are escalating the investigation, but no fix ever happens. I also noticed that the last update they did regarding this issue, completely cleared my set tax rate and now bases it off my customers locations even though I do not ship or deliver.
Hi there, Klingfab. I understand how this behavior impacted your business. I want to ensure that we take this matter seriously.
As per checking, the issue about AUTOMATED SALES TAX (AST) is still currently under investigation and there are no specific updates at this time. However, our engineers are working together to gather a resolution as quickly as possible.
That said, I'd recommend contacting our customer support. This way, you'll receive timely reports through email.

Support says the best way is to use the feedback button to report it. This has been going on for 4 months. This is really unacceptable.
Just spent THREE hours on chat with support on an issue (that while on with them revealed a second issue).
1) in spite of a shipping address being entered, the wrong sales tax authority was selected, and the wrong sales tax calculated and added.. (8.81% vs. 5%)
Tried many things including:
2) while online with tech support, found that some invoices when opened, re-calculated sales tax and changed the amount due by $0.01!
I've been complaining about the STC, STLR and many, many other aspects of this functionality in QBO for literally years (look it up).
It's broken.
It needs to be completely overhauled (including the design of the STC)
Someone back there needs a calculator that does % properly
In the meantime, users are out there likely charging all kinds of incorrect sales tax, sometimes too much... sometimes too little and putting their businesses in potential jeopardy and no one back there has any skin in the game for this!
Get a grip!
