howdy gang.. i was able to mnaully override taxes on invoices for a sync by nulling out the
TxnTaxDetail.TaxLine array
Then it takes the amount from my system and does not calculate anything

Thanks for posting this workaround, but if I am not a developer, is there a way that I can pay you to make this work for us? I do not know how to make changes to my 3d party system to allow this override to happen. I have reached out to the support for the 3d CRM system, but would be great if I can have you explain to them what is happening. Please let me know.
Has this been fixed? We were just fixing a sales tax item and it automatically went to the "BASED ON LOCATION" and we can't seem to get our customized amounts back! HELP!

The option to disable invoices Based on location feature is still unavailable in QuickBooks Online. Rest assured that you will receive an email notification or in-app message regarding this feature's developments.
While we do not have a specific timeframe for when this feature will be available in the system, I'd recommend manually creating a custom rate and using it to calculate the sales tax while creating your invoices.

This has been a MAJOR issue for our Company. The "Based on Location" defaults to the Company's legal address, but does not reflect the STORE address (where the sale actually occurred). We have locations in different Counties, resulting in different sales tax rates. We have to manually change the sales tax rate for every individual Invoice & Customer.
Also, the "Based on Location" does not calculate sales properly - it charges the Customer double sales tax. I've submitted several help desk tickets to try to get this resolved, and they were not able to help me. They suggested we continue to manually change the sales tax rate on each invoice individually. What a nightmare - the "Based on Location" feature needs to allow a disable option. And the "Location of the Sale" should change to reflect the Store Location selected on the invoice.
I am having a similar problem, I set my tax status for each customer, then I once again have to set it for each invoice because that status for some reason does not populate even though it's set. Then QBO CHANGES my selection, so every month my taxes are off and I have to go to each invoice and make the changes AGAIN. Can someone please help with this? All these responses look and sound like they are coming from a bot? Can a human please help us with this?

Welcome to the QuickBooks Community! I can assure you that every response is not from a bot. I would like for you to check a setting from me. Could you verify if you have the items as taxable? Sometimes, you can have the customer taxable but not use any taxable items, which results in the tax not calculating for those items. You dd not even take the time to read the what the problem is. I am sure what you are suggesting solves something but now what this post was originally asking for.
I think this answers the opposite of my question. I have my customer set to Non-taxable when I originally put them in the system. When I create an invoice, for each line item I uncheck Tax and at the bottom I always have to change from 'based on location' to Non-taxable. I do all that even though it should be remembered from when I set up the customer. Then when I run monthly tax reports, the reports are off, so I go back to the invoices and the tax status has changed to 'based on location'. I have to take the time to manually do something the system should be doing for me and then it wipes out my work. How do I make this stop happening?

Tax-exempt rules are not the same everywhere. QuickBooks Online (QBO) will sometimes need to calculate sales tax for tax-exempt customers.
The online program adheres to tax-exempt laws based on what you sell and the address of your consumer. Thus, you'll have to assign the appropriate tax categories for the items and make sure your client's address is correct on each transaction.

RediImports, I have the exact same problem. No response from QBO.
Also, when it comes time to look at the sales tax liability report and get it to sync with the required fields for reporting in the state of California Franchise Tax Board site, what an absolute nightmare. Impossible to figure out for myself, my professional accounting firm, and my CPA. There's something deeply wrong in the software I think.
Sometimes the 'based on location' sales tax doesn't even calculate at all, then we turn the estimate into an invoice, and suddenly the tax appears! So now the customer was estimated a lower amount than invoiced. Well, that works great for a business...

I Know, that is what everyone on this thread is asking you to change!!!!! No one wanted this feature!! Please either make it optional or turn it off!!!
I understand that I can create a new tax rate to choose from, but what good will that do me if your system keeps changing it back to 'based on location'? I also understand that for some reason you are not able to remove that feature. Please answer the question I am asking: Why are you changing the tax rate I manually select for an invoice. How can I stop that from happening?

At one time I was directed by a QBO rep. as to how I could request this change, or help push it to the top of the pile. I did follow through on doing this. Perhaps one of the QBO reps. could post the directions on how everyone here could also do this. I'm not counting on this changing anytime soon, because when I did the request it showed a list of known issues and how high the ranked and this problem was low on the list. QBO has acknowledged there's a problem and there is NO solution. The true real solution is a toggle switch that turns off "Based on Location" sales tax. The only way this will happen is for the software to be modified and a new feature released. QBO reps: the most helpful thing you can do is guide these people to where they can also request the change form the QBO development team.

With QuickBooks Online, the Based on Location feature is working as designed and is a default option in calculating the sales taxes on your sales transactions. We can manually select the Custom Sales Tax rate created to record the sales taxes accurately.
I'd personally want to have the option to turn off this feature to set the custom rate taxes when entering an invoice. Thus, I'd recommend sending this relevant option to our product developers. This way, they'll consider this idea and will work on its progress to include them in our future product updates.

That's a start, and I have done that one, however there is another place that seemed more relevant. Do you know of another way to suggest this FateCandylaneT? I remember there were pages and pages of known issues listed.
These changes do not save. I've spent 30 minutes trying to code items as SAAS.
Anyone know if Xero has a functioning sales tax option? QBO clearly does not care about it's clients. It's too busy developing "modern" reports which export with numbers in useless text format (who thought that one up????) to trouble with minor details like compliance.
Honestly, the states should sue Intuit. That might wake up their developers.
It's not helpful. Every person that uses QBO could submit that request and they still won't fix it. They don't care.
My bookkeeper said QBO will never work for sales tax, and we should use an app that integrates with QBO called Avalera.
After coming back and checking in on this read because I am working on a SATURDAY because of the crapshoot of sales tax feature.
I ONE HUNDRED PERCENT now believe these questions are answered by one of the following: An employee that cannot read or an AI bot who just gives the same one of three answers:
1. We haven't been able to do that since 2020 and still can't
2. Clear your cache for the 473rd time.
3. Go to the gear and leave feedback that will promptly float to cyberspace and is read by ummm....wait for it.... noone.
Had a sales person call this week and ask if I was still interested in moving to Enterprise. I replied with "Not even if YOU paid ME." She seemed so shocked and wanted to know how she could help. I preceded to list the numerous customer complaints that have not been addressed in four years, the list of things they have broken in the last six month when they make UI changes with no notice, read off the list of customer case #s I am still waiting to hear back on, and the Investigation # for corrupt payroll data that has still not been addressed. She had no words. She knew there wasn't a discount in the universe that was going to keep me on that call. Worst customer service of any software on the planet.
