local muncipalities efw2 format the same as SSA e-file

It is the same format as SSA file.  Please dot not give directions on how to file the state.  I already did my state.  I need to submit my city/local tax.  and the cities are not on my state file.  I have employees that can work in 20 different cities each year.  I see that quickbook customers have had the same question for several years.

Hi there, terri. I'll share some details about submitting local/city taxes in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

The SSA file is specific to federal taxes. However, we can still file for your local tax using your state agency tax documents.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Employees menu, choose Payroll Tax Forms & W-2s, and then create State W-2 E-file.
  2. Hit Continue twice, choose your state from the dropdown menu and then select Get QuickBooks Data.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Choose the Add-Ins tab to locate the QuickBooks Payroll State W-2 dropdown menu. Then, hit Start Interview.
  5. Check the box, I understand that I must review my data and answer the following questions. Then, choose Next.
  6. Note the file name and location. Select Next.
  7. Answer the questions in the interview and review any auto-populated info. Then, click Next until you reach the End of Interview.
  8. Choose the Create W-2 File option, then select OK.
  9. Select Yes to save the Excel workbook for your records.

Afterward, we can submit these tax files to your local or city tax agencies.

Alternatively, if you have a QBDT Payroll Assisted subscription and want to submit your W-2 forms instead, we can follow the outlined steps below:

  1. Locate the Employees menu, then Payroll Center.
  2. Choose the File Forms tab.
  3. Select View/Print Forms & W-2s.
  4. Enter your payroll PIN, then click OK.
  5. Click the W-2s tab.
  6. Choose the year, then all or individual employees.
  7. Hit the Open/Save Selected button.
  8. Select the applicable reason for printing the W-2s.
  9. Click File on Adobe Reader and then Print

For QBDT Payroll Enhanced and Standard, visit this article: Print your W-2 and W-3 forms

Also, you can visit the different state agency websites to find details about tax forms, withholdings, unemployment and other tax, e-file, and pay information, general state and agency information, and employer registration.

I'm still all ears for any follow-up questions regarding filing your taxes in QBDT. Stay safe!

Hi terrimyers,

I can see that you've posted related concern on different thread. My colleague has already responded to it. You may review their answer through this link: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/employees-and-payroll/re-efw2-format-for-local-fil....

Keep me posted whenever you have other concerns about filing forms.

The post you are referring to does not have the answer that we are all looking for.  The State file is missing the Local information and gets rejected by the locality.  Is there a way to find or recreate the file that was sent to SSA?

Hi there, @ambergvwp.

I'm here to ensure you can recreate your rejected EFW2.

With regard to this, please know that QuickBooks Payroll Services only supports federal and state tax forms. Thus, local tax forms are not supported.

Alternatively, you can pull up and run various reports in QuickBooks Desktop that can help you recreate the file. I'll show you how to do it:

  1. Go to the Reports menu.
  2. Choose Employees & Payroll.
  3. Then, select Summarize Payroll Data in Excel or other reports in Excel.

From there, those reports contained information that was needed for the localities.

Moreover, here's an article that might help you print copies of your W2: Print your W-2 and W-3 forms.

Please feel free to get in touch with me here for any payroll-related questions. The Community always has your back.

  2. Go to Help, then select QuickBooks Desktop Help/Contact Us.
  3. Select Contact Us.
  4. Give a brief description of your issue, then select Continue.
  5. Sign in to your Intuit account and select Continue and then Continue with my account.
  • If you don't already have an account, make sure to Create a new account.

       6. We'll email you a single use code. Enter your code and select Continue.

  • If you have more than one account, select the account you want to use and then Continue.

7.Select to chat with us or Have us call you.
