Sales Tax Filling Frequency Change

I am having trouble changing my sales tax filling frequency to Monthly from Quarterly. My tax agency changed my filling frequency starting 1/1/24. When I change the current one under Tax agencies, it goes and adjusts all my past year fillings. I don't want it to change any past year detail. When I make that line inactive and try to 'Add agency' it will not let me select Wisconsin. What am I missing here?

Sales Tax Filling Frequency Change

Did anyone ever get a solution to this? I am running into the same problem. I cannot change this year's filing frequency without affecting prior years.

I appreciate you for joining this thread concerning sales tax filing frequency in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @Solutions.

When changing sales tax filing frequency, you should have been given an option to select a start date. With these, you can specify a date for when this cycle will be started. Here’s how:

  1. Go to the Taxes menu and select Sales Tax Settings.
  2. Select the Agency where you want to change the filing frequency.
  3. Under the Action column, click Edit to make changes.
  4. Drill down the Filing frequency section to choose from the option.
  5. Select a Start date and a Reporting method.
  6. Lastly, hit the Save button.

However, if your options are still involved from the prior years, It’s best to contact our Technical Support Team. Doing so will give our phone support an option to thoroughly check your account and initiate a further investigation if need be. They also have the necessary tools that can help determine the leading cause of this behavior while maintaining your privacy. You can follow the steps outlined by my peer, FateCandylaneT to do so.

I have included a helpful resource that can guide you in filing your sales tax returns and payments to avoid any late returns and additional fees. Feel free to use this resource if you need further assistance: File your sales tax return and record sales tax payments in QuickBooks Online.

MY STATE ALSO CHANGED MY PAYMENT FREQUENCY TO MONTHLY BUT I STILL FILE THE RETURN QUARTERLY.  DOES THIS CHANGE THE FILING FREQUENCY IN QUICKBOOKS TO MONTHLY OR SHOULD IT STAY QUARTERLY SINCE I'M FILING THE RETURN QUARTERLY, AND MAKING PRE PAYMENTS MONTHLY?

Yes, you still have the option to stay quarterly for filing frequency, @mevanson.

Ideally, it's best to maintain a quarterly filing frequency as the change only pertains to the payment schedule.

If prepayment occurs, the Sales Tax Center does not support monthly payments for quarterly filers. You can proceed to change the Sales Tax Setting to Monthly Filing Frequency.

  1. Navigate to the Taxes menu and choose Sales Tax Settings.
  2. Pick the Agency for which you want to adjust the filing frequency.
  3. Click Edit in the Action column to make changes.
  4. Expand the Filing frequency section and select the desired option.
  5. Choose a Start date and Reporting method.
  6. Finally, click the Save button.

What do I do if I try and change the frequency of paying sales tax and the dropdown is frozen. It will not let me change it from quarterly to monthly.

Sales Tax Filling Frequency Change

Hello there, @Backflow1.

It must have been the temporary internet file your browser collected that's causing the Dropdown arrow to be frozen when changing the frequency of paying sales tax inside QuickBooks Online (QBO).  We recommend you perform the basic troubleshooting to free your browser from those temporary internet files.

Before anything else, access your account in an incognito or private browser through these shortcut keys:

  • Chrome: Ctrl+Shift+N
  • Firefox: Ctrl+Shift+P
  • Safari: Command+Shift+N

Once you're in, try to change the frequency of paying sales tax. If you can get through it, it means it has something to do with the browser that you're using.  In this situation, proceed to clear your cache. Refer to this article for the steps: Clear cache and cookies to fix issues when using QuickBooks Online.

We're also adding this handy article about how you can manage sales taxes inside the program: Sales tax in QuickBooks Online.
