Texas Unemployment Tax %

I would like some guidance on the correct TEXAS UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE (UI) RATE to use for my business. I searched the Texas Workforce Commission website -

and learned:

Your Effective Tax Rate for 2020 = General Tax Rate (GTR) + Replenishment Tax Rate (RTR) + Obligation Assessment Rate (OA) + Deficit Tax Rate (DTR) + Employment and Training Investment Assessment (ETIA)

Minimum Tax Rate for 2020 is 0.31 percent.

Maximum Tax Rate for 2020 is 6.31 percent.

Currently I am using the max rate of 6.31%, but I would LOVE to use lower rate. Anyone know how to nail down the exact tax rate? Or have a phone number I can call where someone will answer?

Thank you.

Hello there, @tfaust.

It's nice seeing your post today. I'd be glad to guide you as to when and how to fix your SUI taxes in QuickBooks.

The State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) rates change periodically. Your state agency will notify you of the SUI rate changes so you'll know your correct rate and when its effective date.

For general tax questions, you can visit the Texas Payroll Tax Compliance page, then go to the Unemployment Tax section to get their phone number.

For future reference, ensure your SUI tax rate is updated with the current one before making any adjustments.

Then, visit this article for the step-by-step guide on how to enter the SUI tax adjustment to correct employee's paychecks: Entering wage base and tax adjustment to correct employee's quarter (qtd) or year to date (ytd) to d....

I always want to make sure you have the information you need. Let me know how it goes by clicking the Reply button below. Stay safe.

The Texas Workforce Commission has retroactively changed the SUI tax rate for me for 2021.  My rate was 6.31% and is now .31%.  They indicate I have a credit with them for the taxes I have already paid.

How should I address this in Quickbooks?  Go ahead and change the quarterly rate for the first 2 quarters of the year and the third and fourth quarters to the new rate?  Anything else?

I'd be happy to walk you through on how to address your SUI tax rate in QuickBooks Online.

You'll need to update your rate in the system so you can start creating paychecks with the accurate SUI rate. For the paychecks that you made for the previous quarters, you'll need to reach out to our Customer Care Team. This way, they can modify the rates for you.

To update the rate for the current current and succeeding quarters, you can follow these steps:

  1. Click Taxes in the left panel and choose Payroll Tax.
  2. Select Edit your tax setup.
  3. Select State Tax Information.
  4. Hit Change or add new rate.
  5. Refer to your notice from your state and enter your new rate. If the rate is provided as a decimal, you must enter it as a percentage. For example, enter 3.4% (not .034).
  6. Enter the Effective Date provided in the notice from your state.
  7. Hit OK.

For more details about this process, check out this article: Update your State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) rate in QuickBooks or Intuit Payroll.

After that, here's how you can contact our support:

  1. Go to the Help menu at the upper right.
  2. Select Contact Us.
  3. Enter your concern.
  4. Click Let’s talk.
  5. Choose Get a callback
  6. Type in your contact info.
  7. Select Confirm my call.

You can check out this article for our contact information. Click on the QuickBooks Online (QBO) drop-down to see the most updated support schedule: Support hours and types.

Feel free to get back to me if you have other questions about updating your payroll-related information in QBO. I'll make sure you're all set. Keep safe!

I followed all the steps you provided to the other person.  I get a message that the Effective date I am entering will not work try a different date.  I have tried several dates, quarterly end dates, first of year date end of quarter date, none work.  I went to HELP and my help button isn't working.  I sent a feedback message that my HELP button wasn't working.  I got and email from FEEDBACK to do the following:

  1. Log into your QuickBooks Online account.
    2. Select Help then Contact Us
    3. Enter a brief description of your issue
    4. Select Let’s talk
    5. Choose your preferred contact method

Thank you,
Your QuickBooks Team

I really need some support here please!  Give me an Effective date to update my TEXAS SUI in QBO and we can just move on to better things.  Its is sad that we have to rely on a HELP button to get SUPPORT. It would be most preferable to speak to a real live INTUIT human.  But in this dark forest without a working flashlight...I am left alone sitting here staring at a non functioning HELP button.

Texas Unemployment Tax %

I understand how you felt when something's not working, Barbarita57.

We can run some troubleshooting steps to isolate why the Help button isn't responsive.

To start with, open QuickBooks on an incognito window. You can use these keyboard shortcuts to open one:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl Shift N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl Shift P
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl Shift P
  • Safari: Command Shift N

If you're able to get in touch with one of our phone support agents through that window, don't switch to a regular browser yet. This way, you won't get disconnected with them.

If you're still unable to contact us through the incognito page, you can switch to a different browser Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge as an alternative.

If the Help button is still unresponsive, you may contact us through this link: Contact QuickBooks. Then, select QuickBooks Online. Click the Search for something else button. Enter, Update SUI as your keyword and then click Search. Click Start a Message.

Once everything's fine, you can check these references on how you can file and pay taxes online: Sign up for e-services.

Keep me posted if need help in preparing your taxes. I'll make sure that you're taken care of.

I could fix the Texas SUI but not the TX Obligation Assessment Rate.  When I try to modify from 0% to .10% I cant. No option to do so. Is there any other option to modify/fix the rate? I will appreciate your help in this matter.

Texas Unemployment Tax %

Thanks for reaching out to the Community about this, Sagostopr.

Since you're unable to modify your obligation assessment rate, I'd recommend checking your browser. It's possible this could have something to do with temporary internet files. Browsing applications store these types of records, but sometimes they can cause issues with certain webpages. You can open a private window and try updating it.

Here's how to access incognito mode in some of the most commonly used web browsers:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl Shift N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl Shift P
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl Shift P
  • Safari: Command Option P

If you're able to make changes to your rate while browsing privately, it's safe to say this problem's being caused by the browser. It can be fixed by clearing cached data and Intuit-specific cookies.

In the event it continues occurring while using incognito, you'll initially want to try switching to another browsing application.

Here's a list of supported browsers:

  • Google Chrome
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Safari 11 or newer

You can also check a browser's compatibility with your books by utilizing our browser health checkup tool. QuickBooks supports the current and two previous versions of browsers. If you find that you're using an older version, make sure to update it to its latest release. Steps for doing so can be found on the particular company's website.

In the event you've found no problems that could be causing this with your browser, I'd recommend using a different device and/or internet connection. If it continues happening on other devices and/or internet connections, you'll want to get in touch with our Customer Care team. They'll be able to pull up your account in a secure environment, conduct further research, and create an investigation ticket if necessary.

They can be reached while you're signed in:

  1. Use the Help (?) icon.
  2. Click Contact Us.
  3. Enter a description of your situation in the What can we help you with? field, then hit Let's talk.
  4. Select Start messaging or Get a call.

Be sure to review their support hours so you'll know when agents are available.

I'll be here to help if there's any questions. Have a lovely day!

My TWC gross wages does not match my 941s each quarter gross wages

QuickBooks Team

Texas Unemployment Tax %

I'm here to share some information about the TWC gross wages and your 941, kathyewhite.

The TWC Gross Wages and 941 form don't necessarily have to match because some of your employees income is not claimed because of pre-tax and insurance payments. That's the reason why your quarterly federal return does not equal the Texas Workforce Commission Gross Wages.

You'll want to run a payroll report so you'll be able to see your taxes. In the same manner, I recommend reaching out to our QuickBooks Online Payroll Team to check if there's a need to adjust your taxes. To do this, follow the steps below:

  1. Click Help at the top right.
  2. Select Contact us to connect with a live support agent.
  3. Enter a brief discussion of your concern, then click Continue.
  4. Select Start messaging or Get a callback.

Moreover, when you're paying your taxes online, you'll have to note the processing times when dealing with Federal and state taxes.
