Hey there, @ubernaut,
Thanks for getting this to our attention. I can add some information about removing customers in QuickBooks Mac.
May I know what error message are you getting when deleting the customer/job? This will help us narrow things down.
You'll normally get an error message when removing a name if there are existing transactions that were not deleted. You might want to check if you have created journal entries or items under that job.
You can also try making them inactive and see if it gives you the same error. Here's how:
If you're still unable to do the steps, you can merge the name to another job. Here's how.
You can also try running the Verify/Rebuild Utilities to detect and fix data issues within the company file. You can check this article for the complete steps: Verify and Rebuild Data in QuickBooks Desktop
Please let me know the result of the troubleshooting. I want to make sure this issue gets resolved so you can get back to business. Have a great day!

thanks for the help yeah it didn't seem to matter if it was inactive or not but the merge thing worked like a charm! :)
Try using Find to see if there are any more transactions on the job. Command-F and then type in the job name.
This was what I was looking for. Thank you!
I tried all of the advice but nothing worked for me. I started with two entries of the one customer, one of them with an incorrectly spelled name. I changed the incorrect name but when I tried to merge them the merge would not proceed. I then removed all of the transactions of the incorrectly spelled customer and tried to delete it, but got the message that there was an active transaction somewhere. I could not find anything (as in the descriptions above). When I tried to change the name of the remaining transaction to the correct spelling, again it will not proceed. I click "OK" but nothing happens. I have to click 'Cancel' to exit. I tried Rebuildig the data with no effect.
Come on Quickbooks. This is clearly a bug. We shouldn't have to pay for you to fix it.
This is no solution. This is just showboating and explaining all the obvious stuff. This is clearly a bug in Quickbooks and you want to charge some hapless user to pay you to fix it.
We want this fixed as much as you do, Marvlw. Let me route you to the right department.
I suggest reaching out to our customer care support so a live agent can take a better look at this. They have more tools to investigate your issue further and solve this. Here's how:
Let me also add this article to help you know more about merging lists: Merge list entries in QuickBooks Desktop.

If its a bug its the first time I've heard of it. Can you select the customer in the Customer Center and take a screen shot of that window with the transactions tab selected? it should show "There are no transactions of the type "All Transactions", filtered by "Show All", win date range "All Dates".
There are no sub-jobs below the customer/job?
Some of the other things you mention sound like data damage - something that might be caused by a duplicate name somehow having been created (the software prevents that but it could be a bug). The inability to merge is what makes me wonder.
Also is this a job or a customer? If its a job try moving it to the top level first in the customer center (where it is not longer a child of a customer). Does that work? If it doesn't there's some issue with the data and we can work from there. If it does work try deleting it after.
Reply to me and I'll try to help.
This worked, I did have a transaction assigned to the job and couldn't find it until I used "Find" I used the Advanced search and searched for "Name" then selected the client I was trying to delete. 1 transaction popped up. I reassigned it to the correct or renamed client and was then able to deleted the incorrect client.
