Convert QBO to QB desktop

Good evening, @get more data from bank.

Thanks for reaching out to the Community for support. I hope you're enjoying the day so far. I'm happy to lend a helping hand with converting your QBO data to Desktop.

A few things to note before you start the conversion.

  • If you use Multicurrency in QuickBooks Online, your data will not export correctly to Desktop.
  • You need a recent version of QuickBooks Desktop installed before you start. You can download a trial to use as an alternative.
  • You'll need Internet Explorer 11 installed to convert the data.

Now that we've covered some of the Limitations, let's get down to business. I've included the steps below to start your conversion.

First, you'll need to prepare Internet Explorer and your QuickBooks Desktop.

Here's how:

  1. Set up the security settings in Internet Explorer:
    • Right-click the Internet Explorer icon and select Run as administrator.
    • Click on the Tools icon, then Internet Options.
    • Hit Security, then Trusted Sites.
    • Tap on Sites.
    • In the Add this website to the zone field, enter *.intuit.com and *.qbo.intuit.com.
    • Make sure Require server verification (https: ) for all sites in this zone is Unchecked.
    • Close the Trusted Sites window.
    • Make sure Enable Protected Mode is Unchecked.
    • Select Apply, then Okay.
    •  Leave Internet Explorer open.
  2. Right-click your QuickBooks Desktop icon and choose Run as administrator
  3. From the File menu, hit Close Company. Then, you'll leave QuickBooks open while you finish the conversion.

Ok, it's time to prepare to export your QBO data. Let's get started.

  1. Click on the Gear icon and choose Export Data
  2. Enter your reason for exporting and hit Continue.
  3. In the Moving to QuickBooks Desktop section, select Learn more.
  4. Tap on Get started.
  5. Click Install ActiveX Control Now and follow the steps to install ActiveX. Once it's finished, select Continue.
  6. Pick the data you want to export and then Continue.
  7. Review the limitations and Continue.
  8. Enter your contact info and then Continue.

Please note: You'll get an email when your data is ready to export.

I'm just a post away if you need anything else. As always, the Community is here any time you need a helping hand. Enjoy the rest of your day!

Hi, when I click on "learn more" from the EXPORT DATA page , I'm not taken to the next screen where it prompts you to download company data.  Instead, it takes me to the intuit forum and displays a thread on the topic of "Move lists and balances from QuickBooks Online to QuickBooks Desktop".  Can you please advise?

Thanks

I can provide an update on why you're unable to use the Learn more option, pignosema.

Our Product Engineers had turned off that option last December 2020. There's a new process of migrating your data to QuickBooks Desktop.

You can either migrate files by following the steps through this article: Move lists and balances from QuickBooks Online to QuickBooks Desktop. Or use the Export and convert your QuickBooks Online data to QuickBooks Desktop provided by my colleague Tori B to move your files.

If you need further assistance, I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Online Team. They can do screen-sharing and walk you through the process.

Here's how to get in touch with them:

  1. Select Help (?) at the top right.
  2. Enter your concern, then select Let's talk.
  3. Select Contact Us to connect with a live support agent.
  4. Choose a way to connect with us:
    • Start a chat with a support expert.
    • Get a callback from the next available expert.

After you have successfully migrated to QuickBooks Desktop, you can contact their Live Support Team to help check your data.

Keep me posted if there's anything else I can help you with moving the company files. I'll be around whenever you need additional information.

I was successfully able to create and download the export file.  When I run the  desktop migration tool I get the following error:

I am running Desktop Pro 2020 as Admin and don't have any company files open.  Please advise.

Thanks

Hello there, pignosema,

If you have the updated version and you're still prompted with issues, I'd suggest contacting our Customer Support Team. They have the resources to troubleshoot with you.

You can also check out these articles that will give you a list of features on how they are converted into QuickBooks Desktop:

Feel free to mention me in your reply if there's anything else that you need help with.

@pignosema  I was having the same problem.  I found an article online that said the error is because we are running QBD "As Administrator" but we aren't running the Migration Tool "As Administrator".  I opened the MT as admin and was able to get past the point where this error occurred.  I now have another error (of course I do!) but I think this "duplicate file open" error is corrected.   I'm leaving this here for other's information.

Yes, thanks for the feedback.  I stumbled into the same solution by reading some articles (not on the intuit forum) and was able to complete the process by running the desktop migration tool as admin.  @qb support - can you please consolidate all these critical steps into a single article ?  This would be impossible for the layperson without a background in IT.
