Desktop Contractor 24.0

I am the new CFO of a company in the interior design business. We currently have Quickbooks Desktop Enterprise 2024 Contractor Edition. I assume "Contractor" means our Quickbooks is for the Construction industry? We're considering switching to Quickbooks Online. Is Quickbooks Online generic or there is a Contractor version of the QB Online? I was talking with a salesperson from QB and it seems she has no clue about "Contractor" edition. Thank you for your help!

I can share some information about the difference between QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop, @Gary60091.

If you need flexible and comprehensive accounting tools that can be accessed from anywhere, then QuickBooks Online could be a great option for you. However, if you have greater needs, then QuickBooks Enterprise is specifically designed to cater to the needs of businesses dealing with inventory, regardless of their size.

In QuickBooks Online, you can only set the Tax form and Industry from your Account and Settings.

Yes, you can use that version and edition of QuickBooks for your construction business. It's your end-to-end solution for construction projects, from initial estimates to professional quotes to tracking throughout. You can download the Contractor Software Buyer’s Guide through this link: Stay on top of your contractor business

Here's more information about other industry-specific editions you can toggle from and to using your QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise: Toggle to another QuickBooks edition. Each of these industry-specific editions has the same key features as the standard edition of QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise, plus additional reports and tools, such as charts of accounts and menu items tailored to your business type

@Gary60091

I would recommend to stick with QB Desktop. Unless you don't mind to use a 3rd party construction management app to integrate with QBO.

I would recommend testing in a dev environment. backup the company file and the load to QuickBooks Online.  There are a few limitations but really depends on the total number of transactions you have active in your company file.  There is a threshold for that amount the online version will handle.

To answer you questions regarding the Edition of QuickBooks Desktop, specifically the Contractor Edition.  I want to be clear, Enterprise Desktop is the same across all editions in terms of functionality.  The logic behind each edition will vary.  Example Manufacturing vs Contractor.  This is Intuits attempt at providing the custom with a technology that is "business knowledge" driven...

  • Choose the Contractor Edition if your business focuses on construction, project-based work, or services requiring detailed job costing and project management.
  • Choose the Manufacturing & Wholesale Edition if your business is centered on inventory-heavy operations, manufacturing, or wholesale distribution.

If your business spans both domains (e.g., a construction company that also fabricates parts), you might benefit from combining features through custom setups or third-party integrations.

Common Features Across Both Editions

Both editions share the core functionalities of QuickBooks Enterprise, including:

  • Advanced reporting.
  • Multi-user support (up to 40 users).
  • Access to Advanced Payroll.
  • Customizable dashboards and forms.
  • Integration with third-party applications for additional capabilities
