We recently upgraded to Quicksbooks Premier 2022 with the understanding I was fine to run Quickbooks on my Mac via Parallels. The company file is hosted on Windows. I use a Mac for my day to day activities. I use Quicksbooks once or twice a week. I have done this for many years via a virtual machine on Parallels.
After spending a whole day trying to open my company file on my Mac, I discovered that Quickbooks Desktop 2022 DOES NOT support virtual machines. Why? Why would Intuit do this after so many years? It really sucks.
Is there a way to work on my mac and access the company file hosted on my windows machine?
No, QB Online is not an option. We tried it and did not like it.
Let me help you access your company file on Parallel settings, ScottTherrell.
Using the Mac version of QuickBooks is different from the Windows one. To work on your QuickBooks Mac and access the company file hosted on a windows machine, you'll want to install the Parallel App. The Parallels Desktop is a Mac OS application that allows you to run Windows on Mac. You can reach out to an IT guy that will help you install it and how it works.
We can also deploy a private cloud to access your QuickBooks file on your Mac as a workaround. You'll access it by Internet connection and be able to work at the same time with other users.

How did you discover it? Any solid references or just your own conclusions?
Hal of our team is running QBD 2019-2021 on Parallels. We chose to wait using QBD 2022 until they resolve any ongoing issues regarding IE11 and Win 11.
You can set up a simple private cloud solution as a workaround. You'll access your QuickBooks file(s) in a browser on your Mac. It costs $25/month/access
Let me clarify. My company file is hosted on a Windows machine. I want to access that file from my mac via Parallels. I have done it this way for many years. Now that I have upgraded to Quickbooks Premier Plus 2022 (not the mac version), that functionality is no longer available.
From this link: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/help-article/install-products/system-requirements-...
Note: QuickBooks requires you to use Windows natively and not through an emulator or virtual environment.
When I select the option "Open an existing company file", the network location for my company file is gray with a huge red X over it. Keep in mind this using QB 2022 on my mac via Windows on Parallels. This network location is 100% accessible for File Explorer.
So, the functionality I have relied on for over 20 years is no longer available. It would be nice to have an explanation as to why it was removed.
See my reply above. I found this in several place where system requirements or support operating systems are listed. In one place ,it specifically stated M1 macs are not supported.

This is one of the reasons we chose not to explore running QBD 2022 in Parallels for the time being. We found QBD 2022 is still unstable to work with other apps/systems. You can consider a workaround like I mentioned earlier. You don't need to install/run QBD on Parallels to access your files on your Windows machine
Will this function be available in a future update? Or do you thinks is gone forever?
Scott - I have read your notes regarding using QB Pro 2022 on a Windows machine via Parallels on an M1 MacBook Pro. I have been using QBs since about 1996 and still working with QB 2014 pro via VMFusion on my older MacBook Pro laptop. I am trying to figure out (and read between your lines) regarding whether this is possible. I have read other notes via Google and most seem to be able to make it work albeit with some issues like font size. I guess my other choice would be to get a 2019-2021 MacBook Pro that still operates with the Intel chip - but I would really like the opportunity to get the latest & best with an M1. As others have inquired to this issue, apparently the holdup is between Microsoft and Apple (obviously they don't like each other) and something about AMR. Another choice is to get a lesser expensive PC to go along with my proposed purchase of the MacBook with the M1 chip. So are these problems more related to the interface between MS and Apple or is this issue more of an Intuit question. Thanks. Bud
Has anyone gotten 2022 Desktop to install on M1 Mac with Parallels. My 2019 version worked great this way. But when I upgraded I can't seem to install 2022. It gets most of the way through the install and then fails on installing fonts. Any help is appreciated

I'll share some insights about using Quickbooks Desktop with Parallel.
Currently, running QuickBooks Desktop 2022 in Parallel is not recommended. Fiat Lux - Asia mentioned above that this is still unstable to work with other apps/systems.
Meanwhile, check the system requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2022 to have the best experience using it.

Our opinion has not changed until now. We don't recommend running QBD 2022 on Parallels. Consider using QBD 2021 instead. You can still purchase a one-time license for QBD 2021 and request a refund for your QBD 2022 license within 60 days of purchase. Another option is to use the QBD 2021 trial license for up to 90 days and wait for the release of QBD 2023. Please note, they have announced a price increase plan for the upcoming QBD 2023.
There is now an M2 chip with Apple...how long before Quickbooks catches up so we can run Quickbooks 2022 Desktop for Windows on an Apple using Parallels and Windows 11? Seems Quickbooks is about to issue their 2023 software - does it fix the problem?
Thanks for joining this conversation, @TaxTime Professional Corp.
Allow me to chime in and help ensure this is taken care of for you.
While it isn't recommended to run QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) 2022 in Parallel, I highly suggest sending feedback directly to our product developers. They are always looking for ideas to consider on how to improve QBDT.
Here's how to submit feedback:
Also, we haven't received any updates yet if this issue will be fix in the 2023 version. In the meantime, I'll add this article that tackles system and software compatibility with QBDT for more information: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2022.

for what it's worth. I 22 am running mine in parallels on an macbook pro M1 with windows 11 ARM. Seems to be working fine. However, I don't share a file with anyone.
Are you running Windows 11 official release or are you using the developer preview? My understanding is Parallels only works with the developer preview. This may have been updated lately and I am not aware of it.
Also, I have been able to run QB Desktop 2022 via Parallels with a recent build of Windows 11 Preview. I only used it a few times to view some reports. But it seemed stable. I had no issues at the time. This was about two weeks ago.
Since my original post, I did replace my Mac with a Windows 10 system for my office. The Parallels / Win 11 set up (M1 Mac Mini) is what use at home to view reports from a company back up. I've thought about bringing it to my office just to test in a multi user environment. Maybe in a few weeks I will try it.
so, I updated to the latest that Parallels offers for Windows 11 - I tried their Troubleshoot error...maybe the issue is the Canadian product? I'm bothered by this because I did have it installed then tried to install the enterprise version of quickbooks also and it failed, but then did not allow my Accountants version to work and I've been stuck since...
Why don't you try to use Win 10 Home instead? Half of our team is running Win 8 and Win 10 on Parallels. We prefer to use Win 8 as it is more stable but we can't find it anymore in the market. You can consider buying Win 10 instead and you can get it at a discount. Last month we helped our client to get a license for Win 10 Home worth around $50.
It is amazing that with all the inputs from various well-intentioned people no one seems to have a definitive answer to running QB 2022 on a MacBook Pro with the M1 chip. Everything seems to be a work-a-round answer with various results. Do the higher ups at QBs have a final answer to whether this works or not and if it does what needs to be done? Of course, the official statement is that QBs is not recommended to be operated in a virtual environment. But it could if someone were to pay attention to this problem. I would like to get a new MacBook with the M1 chip, install Parallels and then install QBs. But if in the end it will not work it would be helpful for Intuit to find a way to make it work - perhaps with a fix to be sent out. You would think that Intuit would want to solve this problem so that more people would stay with the program (sales?). Or perhaps no one cares. The only advise that makes sense is to run the online version of QBs via the browser on you computer. Then you would not need Parallels or Windows. Any suggestions on how I should proceed with getting a new MacBook Pro with the M1 chip (soon to be M2). Thanks.
Scott -He's not asking for Quickbooks in the cloud or Quickbooks Mac. He's asking why Quickbooks Desktop premier 2022 (or 2023) doesn't work with Parallels on a MAC. BTW....I agree with him. It's an incredible disappointment.
While Quickbooks requires users to use native Windows (i.e. not in Parallels), it always ran in Parallels. Quickbooks supports is terrible on this issue. I spent two days with them and they new nothings
Quickbooks support was awful. I spent two days with them on this issue. They know nothing and told me that they couldn't escalate my issue to level two support. They could provide no reason why it worked with QB 2021 and it doesn't work with QB 2022 or 2023. They also could not explain what was different about the ARM emulated Windows session. Lacking access to Level 2 support...no matter how much I begged left me without a resolution.
IT DOES NOT FIX THE PROBLEM AND THEY DIDN"T SEEM TO THINK IT WAS AN ISSUE. Worst support at Level 1.
Thank you for joining the thread and adding your voice to the conversation, Adam Lipson.
I was able to check with our Tier 2 support team to get some clarity on this issue. While QuickBooks (as an organization) does not officially support Parallels/Virtual Machines, however, it is still technically possible to run QuickBooks Desktop 2022 on a VM. Unfortunately, though, that means that our support team is unable to help with troubleshooting any errors, as QuickBooks Desktop was not built to be run optimally in that environment.
Luckily, our Community is full of knowledgeable folks who may have advice on resolving any errors, so I will leave the floor open to others who have had success running QuickBooks Desktop in their virtual environment.
Make the most of QuickBooks exploration. If you have any debrief about the process, feel free to share them with us in this post. I welcome the opportunity to respond immediately. You have a good one.
Which Windows OS do you run on Parallels?
