Mistakenly created job with the same name as customer

Good afternoon.

QB2024. I mistakenly created a customer job with the same name as the customer.  Now all of the work we've done for the customer are in the job file and nothing in the main customer.  I tried to restore a backup file, but it says the backup file is read only.

Does anyone have any suggestion as to how I fix this mess?

Thanks,

Barbara

Let's configure your company file and uncheck the Read-only option in the Attributes section, Barbara.

The most common causes of the read-only error in QuickBooks are the following:

  • Some other users modified the file and saved it in the read-only mode.
  • The default file attribute status has been set to read-only mode when copying the QuickBooks files from a CD.

To remove the read-only option, here's how to do it:

  1. Open the Windows Explorer and find the company file folder.
  2. Right-click the file, then select Properties and General.
  3. Uncheck the Read-only box.
  4. Click Apply

Once done, run QuickBooks and click on Open or Restore Company. Then click on Browse and choose the company file again.

On top of that, ensure that your QuickBooks Desktop for Mac is updated to the latest release to avoid any issues with your file.

Lastly, here's an article you can read to learn how to fix common data and file issues in the program: Verify and rebuild data in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

Mistakenly created job with the same name as customer

Hello @B_R_Wells_2024 , depending on if all of the transactions under the Job are supposed to be for your parent customer there is an easy fix for this.  If so, I'd recommend a new backup first (just for safety precautions).  Then, in your Customer Job List, I would rename the Job to something specific.  Then you can 'drag' the Job out from under the Parent Customer and make this a Parent in itself.  Afterwards, you can edit the Job name and make it the same as the Parent Customer, when you click OK to save this it will prompt you to Merge the two together.  That will make all of the transactions under the Job now show in the Parent Customer and the Job will no longer exist.

If you prefer to restore the backup file, you will need to open the DMG file for the backup.  Once that DMG image is mounted, you can drag your company file out to where you would like to store it.  Then from within QuickBooks Mac you can go to File > Open Company and navigate to the location where you copied the new file to.

I hope this helps.
