For the opening balance, make sure to mark the column for Open Balance to show in the Transaction Detail by Account report.
Here's how:
On the other hand, the Closing Balance will not show in the report. Rather, it will show as the total amount per transaction in the Amount column. Below is a sample screenshot on how the report looks like:
Also, I have articles here about managing reports in QuickBooks Online (QBO) for your reference:

Thanks for the reply. I selected open balance and the column is on my report, but the field is blank. I spoke with tech support and they did not have a solution.
I selected open balance and the column is on my report, but the field is blank. I spoke with tech support and they did not have a solution. I have successfully used this customized report for several months, why is it different this month?
Hi there, slterry.
Thank you for coming back and performing the troubleshooting steps shared by my colleague above to resolve the issue. I'll provide information and other steps so that the opening and the closing balance shows on the report.
It might be your regular browser is experiencing some issues and that's why the open balance column is blank. I recommend logging in your QuickBooks account using a private browser. This is to rule out the possibility of a webpage issue, and private browsing doesn't store local files or cache.
Use these keyboard shortcuts based on the browser you're using.
If it works in incognito, I recommend clearing the cache of your regular browser. This removes the history or log of sites so you can start with a clean slate. You can check this article to see the steps: Clear cache and cookies to fix issues when using QuickBooks Online. If the steps above didn't work, use another supported browser as an alternative.
However, if the problem continues to occur, I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Support Team again. They can pull up your account to further investigate this issue.
Please refer to this article to see which reports are available for your version of QuickBooks Online: Reports included in your QuickBooks Online subscription.
Don't hesitate to get back to me if you need further assistance with QuickBooks. You have a wonderful day.
I am having this same issue. Unfortunately the solutions posted do not help as the Open Balance column shows, but is all blank. I found the solution on another thread so I thought I would post it here in case anyone else has this issue and can't find the solution.
Rather than running the "Transaction Detail by Account" report, you can get the same information from the General Ledger Report and adding the Credit, and Debit columns. In this report the Balance column shows the beginning and ending balances correctly. No need to add the Open Balance column as it still doesn't show anything, but the Balance column should have everything needed.
This worked for me and solved the problem.
