QB 2009 Desktop company file upgrade to QB 2017 Desktop

My computer hard drive crashed.  I had QB 2009 for invoicing only and QB 2017 for bookkeeping.  The QB 09 company file was on a different hard drive so I did not lose it.  I've reinstalled QB 17 and have updated it.  I tried to open the QB 09 company file using the QB 17 program but I get an error message that says The company file that you are trying to open was created with a newer version of Quickbooks.  Please upgrade your copy of Quickbooks.  I'm confused about that since it's a QB09 company file.  I've tried to find the QB09 CD but haven't found it yet.  I don't even think it would install on new computer since it's a Windows 11 machine.  Any thoughts on how to open the QB09 file to migrate it over to QB17?  Thank you.

Utilize the trial version for QBD 2022 to open the file. If it works, you'll know which QBD year version the file was opened earlier. Another option, send us the file and we can help to check it.

I know it can be challenging when you can't restore your data, flow plumbing. I'm here to ensure you can start working on your file again.

Accessing your company file using a higher version of QuickBooks can cause this error. Make sure that the file and program are compatible to avoid issues.

Once done, we can now upgrade the data. I'll show you how:

  1. Prepare the QuickBooks Desktop 2017.
  2. Make sure all users log out of your company file.
  3. Open your new version of QuickBooks Desktop.
  4. Select Open or Restore Company if you don't have a company file open. You can also go to the File menu and select Open or Restore Company.
  5. Select Open a company file, then Next. If you have a backup company file (QBB) instead of a company file (QBW), select Restore a backup copy and then Local backup.
  6. Browse your computer for your company file. Select it and then click Open.
  7. Sign in to your company file as an admin user.
  8. Before you upgrade, QuickBooks automatically creates a backup of your existing company file. You can select Change this default location to save the backup in a specific folder.
  9. Select Update Now to start the upgrade.
  10. When QuickBooks finishes, select Done.

Please note that QuickBooks Desktop 2017 has been discontinued. The support and updates for this version are no longer available. It is recommended to use the supported versions.

Additionally, I've included these resources that'll help you ensure your 2009 data is successfully moved to the 2017 version:

Please keep us posted on your progress in migrating your data. It's my priority to ensure this gets resolved.

Where do I send backup file?

To address your concern, I would like to ensure that you can transition smoothly from QuickBooks 2009 to QuickBooks Desktop 2017, particularly regarding the handling of backup files, @kniemann.

If you wish to load the backup file on the same computer, sending it is not required. You can directly restore it in the newer version of QBDT.

On the other hand, if you want to share your accounting data or move it to another computer, you can copy and paste or put the backup file on a USB stick. Then, plug it into your new machine to restore the file.

Note that there are numerous methods available for transmitting your company file. With QBDT, you can also create a portable company file. This is a compact version of your regular data file that's small enough to send in an email or put on a thumb drive.

Additionally, I'm adding these references to help assist you in importing lists and data using the designated file format:
