Updating company file after QB Desktop upgrade

We just updated our QB Desktop software from 2021 to 2023.  I have one company file that when I click on it tells me to contact the Administrator to update the file.  It never gives us the opportunity to log in.  Any suggestions what might be going on and how we can fix it?  All our other company files updated perfectly.

Updating company file after QB Desktop upgrade

Hello there, @kcathey.

I'll help you fix and avoid the error message you're getting to contact the administrator to update the file.

Since you cannot open a company file, I recommend closing the QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) app. Instead, go to the QBDT app and click the right button of your mouse. Select the Run as administrator.

Once done, if the issue persists, it would be best to contact our Customer Care team. One of our agents will help you uninstall/reinstall the program and assist you further to resolve the error.

You can follow these steps to reach out:

  1. Go to Help inside QuickBooks.
  2. Select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  3. Click Contact Us.
  4. Enter "cannot OPEN the file & get a dialog box "Update Company File for New Version" in the description field, and hit Continue.
  5. Choose Get a callback.

I'm also adding this article to help you resolve the issue if you can't open your company file: Can't open your company file in QuickBooks Desktop.

Additionally, here is an article you can read that will help you if you need to fix your QuickBooks Desktop for Windows: Repair your QuickBooks Desktop for Windows.

As far as I know, you can't fix this problem yourself. You'll need to chat with Support and ask to fix it (i.e. repair and upgrade the the file). Otherwise, you will have to purchase a third-party service to do so.

Updating company file after QB Desktop upgrade

Hello - I thought this would work for me but I am still getting an error message. I upgraded our Desktop Pro Plus 2022 to Desktop Pro Plus 2024 successfully one my computer where the file is stored. I am running into difficulty upgrading our second computer. After trying many things I was able to get to a window that said to upgrade it - I clicked and it started working, however I have repeatedly gotten the message that says QB Installation failure with error code: ________________________________

But there is no code so the only option I have is to click ok and do it again but get the same error code (with no actual code) - any ideas how I can get our other computer upgraded so we can use it?

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Sjones94. I see the urgency of this matter. I'll provide some troubleshooting steps so you can attain your goal.

Before anything else, I'd like to ask if you can share a screenshot of the error your computer encountered so we'll have a better view of the issue and provide you with the exact resolution.

In the meantime, let's do the QuickBooks Tool Hub steps to fix the installation and upgrading issue on your computer. Before that, ensure to close all tabs of QuickBooks on your other computer.

Then, use the latest QuickBooks Tool Hub and save it in a folder where you can locate it easily.

Here's how to operate it:

  1. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksTollHub.exe.)
  2. Perform the on-screen instructions to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  3. After the installation, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub. If you can't find it, manually search on your computer.
  4. After that, launch the QuickBooks Tool Hub to utilize tools to fix installation and upgrading errors.

Check out this article for more information: Fix common problems and errors with the QuickBooks Desktop Tool Hub.

If you're referring to the difficulty of upgrading your computer system to fit in with what QuickBooks needs, I suggest contacting your IT technician to guide you with the processes.

You can visit this article to see the detailed requirements and find out if your computer meets them: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2024.

I'll also share this article to learn about the improvements and enhancements of QBDT 2024: What’s new in QuickBooks Desktop 2024.

Let me know if you have additional questions about installing and upgrading your account on your computer by leaving a comment below. Have a good one.
