Good information,When I open quick books i get the pop up “quickbooks subscription has lapsed ,My annual payroll was renewed in July but for the first time i did not upgrade from 2021 pro plus, could this be the subscription that is referring to? I am looking for a short term suggestion,My business is closing and I just need to finish some year end items.
Thank you
It's sad to know that you'll be closing your business, @Cas9.
Allow me to lay down some steps and additional information regarding your subscription in QuickBooks so you can still finish your year-end items.
There are actually ways on how to get this fixed however since you mentioned you didn't upgrade your subscription, I recommend installing the latest update for your version of QuickBooks Desktop. It makes sure you have the latest features and fixes.
You can either set up auto-updates or update manually.
Here's how to manually update your QuickBooks Desktop:
You can refer to this article for more information about this process: Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.
On the other hand, you can also consider purchasing a single QuickBooks Pro license. This license is locally-installed and supports a single user.
Don't hesitate to add any details below if you need further assistance in accessing your QuickBooks account. Stay safe and enjoy your day.
I'm here to share some information about QuickBooks handles your data after cancelation, raerae4471.
After you close your subscription, we will only keep your company file for a year before it will be permanently deleted. It's recommended to save the payroll and tax reports that you might need in the future.
During this time, you'll only have read-only access to your account. You need to resubscribe so your accountant can take care of the IRS notice. Here's how:
If your account was cancelled in 2020, we're unable to reopen it anymore since it's already been erased from the system. You may need to directly coordinate with the Internal Revenue Service to settle your taxes. Please visit this link to get their contact information: https://www.irs.gov/help/telephone-assistance.

I am really puzzled. I have Quickbooks Desktop Premiere Contractor's Edition 2022, but I cannot access my Company Files because Quickbooks says my subscription has expired....HUH? I thought this edition is a stand alone??? What's going on?
Yes, mine was stand alone as well and the response above is NOT correct. There is no read only option for a year. I spent hours on the phone arguing with QuickBooks about this.
There is no read only access to my files. I've spoken to several people for hours and none of them could help me gain access. I just spent $500 to be able to finish this year out and retire.
I know this hasn't been easy for you, CLM1 and Sharalyn.
Beginning of 2022, QuickBooks Desktop is only available as an annual subscription in either the Pro Plus, Premier Plus, or Mac Plus version. We recommend renewing each year to maintain access and get the latest updates. The company files will remain once it expires, but you won't be able to access them.
Also, read-only access is only available in QuickBooks Online. In QuickBooks Desktop, you must have an active subscription to access your data. I suggest to renew your QuickBooks Desktop 2022 to open your file.
Here's how:
Contacting our customer support team may also be a good idea. They can help you with the renewal process. I'll show you how.
Once everything is okay, you can read this article to guide you in restoring your company file for future use: Restore your file.

Qbooks doesn't get it. WE DON'T WANT DESKTOP TO CHANGE. WE DON'T WANT TO LOSE access to our qbooks. We DON'T WANT TO switch over to the horrible online version of qbooks. WE DON'T WANT A SUBSCRIPTION BASED SERVICE TO OUR DESKTOP!
At this point, all I want to know is if my payroll subscription to my desktop pro 2020 will continue in 2023 or will QBooks use that to try to get me to switch to the desktop subscription version? I don't want qbooks to auto renew anything on my account until this is worked out. And if I have to run payroll by hand the old fashioned way, I will, rather than switch to the options you are offering.
I honestly feel like this is "ransomware"; "You want access to your records, PAY UP!" I would offer that, I should have access to everything I've paid for already, and that my data NOT be held for ransom.
You are spot on. Yes, it is ransomware, or extortion, or blackmail, or whatever you choose to call it. Potato Potahto. I've purchased every version of Quickbooks since it came out in DOS, and now, I have to give them money every year to see data I created 20 years ago. It is patently unfair. Someone, please come up with a Quickbooks alternative that actually works. You'll make a fortune, because we will all switch within nanoseconds.
Hi there, @SKC23. I'll gladly share some information with you.
After May 31, 2023, your access to QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Services, Live Support, Online Backup, Online Banking, Merchant Services, and other services via QuickBooks Desktop 2020 software will be discontinued.
If you don't use any of the QuickBooks Desktop 2020 add-on services, your product will continue to function properly. You will not be able to subscribe to live technical support or any of the other Intuit services that can be integrated with QuickBooks Desktop. Furthermore, discontinued versions will not receive the most recent security patches and updates.
You can utilize these articles for detailed information:
If you'd like to remain on QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Basic, Standard, or Enhanced. Just do the following by May 31, 2022:

So my payroll subscription will renew in Feb 2023. Are they going to just charge for 3 months? How much will the fee be?
Also, stop pushing the online product. It's horrible. It's not a viable alternative and the technical glitches that occur that corrupt the data when converting from desktop to online is permanent. Gone. Forever changed. Yes, done that too, with another company.
Quickbooks - keep desktop the way it is!!! You have no idea the chaos you are creating for millions of user!!!
If you are working solo on a desktop (PC or Mac) to manage your book and only need basic features, you should explore this one. You can use the program for as long as you like, use all the features and enter as much data as required. There are no time limits, no usage limits, no ads (at this time). This program is quite popular in Asia and Europe.

You should switch to a monthly plan to use QB Desktop Payroll until May 2023 to work with your QB Desktop 2020. Alternatively, if you renewed your annual QB Desktop Payroll in Feb 2023, you will need to purchase a supported version of QB Desktop (2021-2023) in May 2023 to keep working with QB Desktop Payroll.

How many user licenses do you have for QB Desktop and how many employees for payroll? We've calculated that at some point, going with QB Desktop Enterprise Gold edition is cheaper than QB Desktop Pro/Premier + QB Desktop Payroll.
I've got your point, SKC23.
I understand how you feel and know how important it is for you to maintain the same QuickBooks choice as before. Currently, there isn't a way to get the one-time license since the new QuickBooks Desktop is already under an annual subscription.
Once your payroll subscription expires, you can still renew it. However, your QuickBooks Desktop 2020 will discontinued on May 31, 2023. Access to all add-on services, including payroll, will end. I recommend getting the supported version of QuickBooks Desktop to keep using the service. Please visit this page to see the latest QuickBooks Desktop and Payroll services plans & pricing:
If you decided to buy the latest supported version of QuickBooks, please follow the instructions offered by my colleague JamesAndrewM to keep processing payroll with the new edition of QuickBooks software.
Alternatively, utilize Fiat Lux - ASIA recommendation to help you manage your books.

Enterprise Gold is ridiculously expensive. I have 3 EE's, including me, monthly payroll. Simple.
Supported version... You mean the subscription based format? Why? There is nothing about that that I want. The product is no good.
Enterprise Gold is ridiculously expensive. I have 3 EE's, including me, monthly payroll. Simple.
If you use QB Desktop Pro Plus for a single user, you need to have 6 employees to break even (at this time) when switching to QBD Enterprise Gold.
Supported version... You mean the subscription based format?
You may find some partners/resellers that offer QB Desktop 2021 with one time license. Unfortunately it can only be used until May 2024 to be integrated with QBD Payroll.
I have QuickBooks ProPlus and am going to convert one of my business accounts to QBO. But I have 2 other accounts in QB ProPlus and I will want to cancel ProPlus. Will I still be able to manually use ProPlus OR can I downgrade to just QB Pro?
Which QB Desktop year version do you run on Pro Plus?
2020
I've already recommended the option for your situation. As long as you still prefer to use QB Payroll, you have no choice but to upgrade to QB Desktop Plus next year.
I will be running my payroll manually when the time comes to convert. I need to switch to monthly payroll fees til the subscription portion comes into play. I will not convert to the new qbooks subscription format and I will not pay the ridiculous fees Qbooks wants to charge and I will not subject MY data to be hijacked by intuit for not paying a subscription fee.
I feel the same way as you...this is so crazy this my first year for renewal and i didnt know it was this crucial i would not have signed up ad i need the quickbooks
