Thank you for reaching out here in the Community, @ArmariTransport. Let me share what I know about your query.
Running a journal report in QuickBooks Online is easy. If we have a specific reporting period, we can go and filter it so when we run the report we will only see the data that we need. Filtering can save you a lot of time reviewing your entries.
You might want to give this article a visit, it's about how to run reports in QBO.
Let me know how it goes by leaving a comment down below. I’m always around to help you. Keep safe.
When is this going to get fixed? There will ALWAYS be entries that do not fit other voucher types and the use of a journal entry will be needed. Get this fixed. This field should be the same name field as any other transaction form.
Stop playing around with how the menus on the left appear and fix the functionality that is needed to be a better program. I have clients that have intentionally gone back to desktop because of several reasons. Bring the online into more conformity with desktop and you'll have a killer accounting program.
Mine don't have
Hello, raquel-cardama-r.
I'd like to barge in and reiterate what my colleagues shares in this thread.
To view the attached name to the journal entry, you'll have to open the transaction manually. Also, as mentioned by BettyJaneB, the name that you attach on the journal entry is intended for the specific line of the entry. This is the reason why it won't show up on the reports as it doesn't represent the name of the transaction and it's also working as design.
You may want to run the Transaction list by Customer to view the name of your customer in the Journal entry.
You can refer to these articles on how to customize and filter your reports:
Let me know if you have any other questions about the journal entry report. Have a good one.
That is utterly ridiculous. Quickbooks desktop shows the name for that specific line.
Also, when I'm looking for something I don't want tie have to to ina and out of multiple entries to find it. My time is super valuable.
Fix it.
I agree!
I understand that you want the Name field for journal entries to appear on the Journal report, boncrab and LyndaS.
In QuickBooks Online, the Name field for journal entries won't show up and it's working as design. As a workaround, you can export the report to Excel and manually enter the name from there.
Here's how to export the report.
If you’re missing data when you open the report in Excel, the file's in protected view. In Excel, you’ll need to select Enable Editing to view the full report.
In addition to this, you can submit feedback about the feature that you want to add. Here's how:
Your valuable feedback goes to our Product Development team to help improve your experience in QuickBooks. You can track feature requests through the QuickBooks Online Feature Requests website.
I'm also adding this article to help you run other reports to get an overview of your transactions: Reports included in your QuickBooks Online subscription.

I can put the name in on the journal entry but then it quickly disappears when I go to the next line of the journal entry. When I print the journal entry, the names are not there. The costs (in this case labour) are going to the correct project or customer but it doesn't show on the journal entry. It used to but stopped about two months ago. What has happened?

Hello rdallison,
Thank you for reaching out to the QuickBooks Community! I was able to test this, and it seems to be working fine. I even went a step further, and I didn't find any open investigation for this. I recommend some browser troubleshooting steps for this type of behavior. Here is what you can do:
Solution 1: Try logging in using private browsing. This method ensures that the browser would not be able to store cookies, history, or any form of data that could cause issues.
From there, go back to the journal entry and see if the names are there. If they are, this would indicate your cache and cookies need to be cleared.
Solution 2: Clear cache and cookies. Overtime collection of data from frequent page visits can cause corruption of data. Clearing cache and cookies will remove those corruptions, allowing the page to load a clean copy. Follow this link to clear those cache and cookies depending on your browser.
If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to reach out! Or, if you are still having issues, let me know so I can investigate this further! Take care.
I am sorry, but you need to go back and read the message thread.
It is not inside an entry where the issue is. It's when you run a REPORT. The names from journal entries and deposits do not populate in a REPORT. AND THEY SHOULD.
When using QB Desktop when account detail reports are run it includes any names which were entered in the journal entry field. Don't know why QBO should be any different. We shouldn't have to make customized report changes to make this happen. This is where QB Desktop is better than QBO!
Thanks for joining this conversation, @SLozen.
Allow me to jump in and help ensure this is taken care of for you.
QuickBooks Online (QBO) and QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) have similarities and differences when it comes to features. I can see how having the names shown in the journal entry field of reports in QBO would be helpful for you and your business.
I highly suggest sending feedback directly to our product developers. They're always looking for ideas to consider on how to improve QuickBooks. Here's how to submit:

I have submitted this feed back numerous times. I'm an avid feedbackee. I would love to go online with all my clients but there are things I use REGULARILY in desktop that are not available in online. And many of them i don't understand why they havent been built yet.
Seems so much time is spent on how things look that the functions we need and want dont get done. Stop changing how and where things are in the menus and build the functions.
Now, i certainly hope that when people make suggestions or nees something and post them in these threads that these things are being sent as feedback as well. If not, WHY NOT.
And the ONLY THING that helps as responses to this thread are action to tet the name to show in reports. Its ridiculous to have to click into a transaction to see a name if there is one.
I can't believe you're actually recommending exporting a report to Excel and manually entering the data there that we already entered in a field that QBO provided for us. And this is your workaround for accountants! Our time is way more valuable than that. When we recommend QBO to our clients as an accounting solution it's not so we can charge them more because of the extra time it takes us to get the information we need. As has previously been mentioned multiple times, this works well in Desktop without an Excel workaround. Why is their a problem with consistency between your products?
I am having problems with QBO doesn't assign tran # like in QBD. That makes researching a pain in the you-know-where. They need better programmers to work on QBO
Hello there, @KatyBelle.
I understand the relevance of having the option to assign transaction numbers when using QuickBooks Online (QBO). However, this isn't available in QBO. Meanwhile, it's best to put forward your suggestions and feedback regarding this option to our product developers. Here's how to send feedback:
Our product engineers would consider your suggestions and you can always check the status of your request through this link: QuickBooks Online Customer Feedback.
Furthermore, I've added an article to help you organize your bank feeds transactions: Categorize and match online bank transactions in QBO.
I appreciate your willingness to help us improve our products, @KatyBelle. For any additional concerns regarding your transactions in QBO, I'm just a reply away.
Katybelle, you fan search most transactions using the advanced search. Click the magnifying glass, in the bottom right corner of the window that pops up, click Advanced Search. Then bookmark this page and add it to your bookmarks bar. That way you have it available. Click a new tab and click your Search shortcut.
Thanks, but even we ticked "Name" in list of columns, it doesn't apply to the journal transactions. Please help
Everyone, has QB fixed this, I just want the NAME on the journal entry section to show up in the NAME section of the general ledger activity reports I run as I have all expenses to summarize automatically by the NAME from a data dump from the general ledger, however any and all Journal entries I make which I include the name in each line item DOES not show up in the NAME section of the general ledger report. Can someone inform me how I can get the NAME text in the name field of a journal entry to SHOW UP in the NAME SECTION of the general ledger report
No, Intuit has not fixed the problem of line item names in JE's not populating reports. This thread is close to 3 years old; Intuit doesn't want to fix this because it won't make them any money. I have been using QBO since the beginning and HATE it! Everything takes 3 times as long to complete compared to QB Desktop. QuickBooks Online is all about monetization of data which involves buying addon's and downloading transactions. Anybody can work with QuickBooks Online, right? If the novice has their credit card added to the COA three times, who cares? Who needs accountants reviewing data, performing year end functions and creating journal entries? The bots can do it.
FYI, the problem of names not populating reports like the general ledger persists for any transaction with multiple line items. QBO is not sophisticated enough to populate the line item name from a deposit or check unless there is only one item in the transaction. In the case of deposits Intuit prefers users to use the invoice/payment/undeposited funds/deposit method instead of reporting multiple receipts on one deposit. Why? If users are forced into creating an invoice for every transaction they are closer to signing up for Intuit Merchant Services-which makes Intuit money. Intuit makes it harder to record check and outside merchant account transactions because they don't make any money on them. The problems and daily harassment users experience in QBO is all by design to make money because Intuit always has a monetized solution to programming problems.
This is so depressing. Also I was told from support they plan to fix this within two days! I'm honestly skeptical, after finishing this thread, lets see if it happens...
You obviously know nothing about accounting to make such a comment.
QuickBooks, how has it been more than 4 years and you still haven't solved this problem? I have discussed moving my clients to other platforms and this is honestly making me want to do so. As so many people have pointed out in this thread, this setup is simply unacceptable. Everybody is tired of your excuses. I genuinely don't know how you already had QuickBooks desktop and still got so many things so wrong in building QuickBooks Online. Either way, it is clear whoever programmed this screwed up and you cannot convince me otherwise. Why do you have the ability to add names in a journal entry, but then they don't show up? How does that even make any sense? There are lots of functions this impacts, including deposits, journal entries, and split transactions. The vendor name/customer name should ALWAYS BE ENTERED AT THE LINE LEVEL and should show up in the various reports. Fix it! Stop making excuses. This was brought to your attention in 2018. It's 2023!
This is not what we want you to feel, @JC Beans.
I can see how this feature would benefit your business and the program. Like you, I'm also anticipating for the option to show names on Journal Entries in QuickBooks Online to be available.
I know you've been waiting for a long time for this feature to be available but please know that future feature releases will have to undergo extensive measures and trials to validate its usage and effectiveness. With this, I'd recommend sending your own feedback to our Product Developers so you'll be notified through email once an update regarding this feature will be available:
You can refer to this link so you can track the status of your request and get the latest updates from our development team: QuickBooks Online Customer Feedback
Additionally, I've added an article that'll help you filter and get the most out of your financial reports: Customize reports in QuickBooks Online. You can then memorize the report to save its current customization.
Drop a reply anytime if you still have questions or concerns regarding reports in QuickBooks Online. I'll be here to assist you further. Take care.
