Switch to single user mode

I am trying to switch single user mode (desktop version) - the system keeps telling me "

We weren’t able to close the company file for all users

Some users may have a window that prevents the company file from closing.  Contact them to ask them to close any windows they are working in and log out."

Except nobody else is logged in, this just starting happening a few weeks ago and I can't get around it.  Very annoying.

Any suggestions?

Switch to single user mode

Hi there, @UDNFinanceGuy.

I'd feel the same if I get the same error for how many weeks when switching from multi-user to single-user mode. I'm here to help get rid of the error message so you can get back to working order.

If the error consistently refers to a specific user, and that user is not actually doing a task in QuickBooks, you can follow the steps below:

  1. Have the user that’s referred to in the error close and reopen QuickBooks on their workstation.
  2. On another workstation, open QuickBooks. Go to the Company menu and select Users, then View Users.
  3. Have the user that’s referred to in the error sign out of QuickBooks on their workstation.
  4. Go back to the list of users. If the specific user no longer appears as signed in, you should be able to do the task without the error.

However, if the error appears on multiple workstations or on only one workstation, you can check out this article to learn how to fix it: Fix locked file errors in QuickBooks Desktop.

Just in case you want to know the tasks and features available you can use in single or multi-user mode, you can read this article for more information: Features available and tasks you can perform in single or multi-user mode.

Come back to this post if you have other concerns or follow-up questions about switching to single-user mode. I'll be right here to provide further assistance.

Switch to single user mode

Trying to switch to single user mode and states a user is logged in.  I cannot kick the user, receiving the same response as this OP.  I go to 'Chat With A Coworker', and no one but myself is logged in.  No where else does it show that user logged in except when I switch to single user mode.

Switch to single user mode

When switching to single user mode it tells me that a user is still logged in and I receive the same message like this OP, it cannot kick the user.  I go to 'Chat with a Coworker' and no one is logged in but myself.  The only place it shows that anyone is logged in is when I try to switch to single user mode.

@pamelaschoeben

Open the sample file. Can you switch between single user mode and multiuser mode without any issue?

Switch to single user mode

I want to ensure this is taken care of, pamelaschoeben.

Let's open a sample and try to switch to a single-user mode. If it works, I recommend downloading our QuickBooks Tool Hub. This tool scans and fixes issues with your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) software.

Here's how:

  1. Close your QuickBooks software.
  2. Download our QuickBooks Tool Hub
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install.
  5. When the installation finishes, open the tool hub on your Windows desktop.
  6. Select Program Problems.
  7. Click Quick Fix My Program.
  8. Start QuickBooks Desktop and open your data file.

For more details, check this link: Fix common problems and errors with the QuickBooks Desktop Tool Hub.

Afterward, I recommend updating QuickBooks to the latest release to avoid future issues and utilize the software's full functionality.
