QuickBooks 2014 for Mac is asking for a migrated administrator password and one was never set up.

I am trying to log into my QuickBooks 2014 company file.  I created it new in QB 2014, I did not convert it from a previous version.  I never assigned passwords to the company file.  Now when I try to log in, it wants a migrated administrator password and I do not have one.

Thats odd. Have you tried your Mac password? You are convinced you are opening the correct file?

Same thing happened to me - is your file in Dropbox by chance? I deleted mine and then resynced it (or moved it, can't remember) and this happened to me too. No solve yet.

Yes!  It absolutely is in Dropbox!  I wonder why that would affect it?  I have other company files in Dropbox, and those haven't experienced this problem.  With the other files, they were converted from Windows and do have a password.  But this new company file was started in Mac 2014 from scratch and never had a password.  I don't understand how Dropbox could have added a Migration password on its own.

Nothing could add a migration password on its own - only the QuickBooks code can do that. And that code is only supposed to be run in the circumstances described in the tech support article INF 12884 (linked below).  But there may be something that DropBox is doing to the write access that is causing the QuickBooks "create a migrated admin" code to run.  That sounds really odd but I guess it is a possibility.

In general I don't recommend having your QuickBooks company file in DropBox. DropBox is doing things to sync the file - who knows what?  We did test accessing a file on DropBox from two different locations simultaneously and that resulted in DropBox, on its own, creating a copy of the file for the second user to hit it, and giving the second user access to this copy.  That is never what you want with QuickBooks files.

I'll ask the engineers who implemented the migrated user account (its actually part of the addition of multiuser and permissions model) to see what they think about this.  But we can't really support DropBox as a file system.

Did you convert it from QuickBooks Windows?  Have you turned on Multi-User?

No, it was not converted from Windows or an earlier QB version.  It was a brand new company file created in QB for Mac 2014.  No, no multi-user or any password set during setup.

This article discusses the Migrated Administrator:

The password may have been in your system keychain and was being auto-entered.  You can open the keychain access application, select All Items in the Category section, and type "QuickBooks User" in the search field.  This will show all the user passwords already in your system keychain.  Double click on them and then click "Show Password" to see the password that was stored.

Usually when this happens the QuickBooks file has been moved to a new machine.  If that's the case you may have to look at the old machine's keychain using the technique above to find out what the password was.

If all else fails you can contact support and they can help you.

I have the same problem and don't use Keychain.  What else can I do?

Same issue is not enough info to get a meaningful answer. Users earlier in this thread had their file stored in DropBox. More details on how you use QB and what led up to this may produce some results.

You can contact Intuit support and they can help you.  But it may be in your keychain if you switched machines. Everyone uses Keychain if they use the Mac OS - it isn't always obvious to people though.

A Migrated Administrator password is created when upgrading from prior version of QuickBooks for mac. The owner password on the file is attached to the new Migrates Administrator user. 

 

If the file you've convert from QuickBooks Desktop is asking for a password that wasn't set up before, we can reset it.

I have a similar question. All help is appreciated.

I am the sole administrator for 2 companies. I migrated QB originally from Windows and purchased QB2014.  Today I purchased QB Business2020 and registered the purchase online.

I forgot my 2014 password a long time ago and accessed QB2014 by using the Forgot Password question.  I checked the password in my Keychain access and it does not allow access. When I sign in QB2020 as a Migrated Admin I can no longer access the password question and get this error "Quickbooks could not verify your information. Make sure QB is registered (it is) with a valid license number and email address (it is) and that your computer is currently online". So I am stuck going nowhere.

 

I need help resetting the password.

When converting from QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) for Windows to the Mac version (or also known as round-tripping), the admin password should be migrated and attached to the created Migrated Administrator user.

 

Since you already reset the password and checked the keychain and the issue persists, I highly suggest contacting our Phone Support team. They're able to pull up your account using their screen-sharing (remote access) tool and further investigate this odd behavior. They can also try other troubleshooting steps that fix this for you.

 

Here's how to reach them:

 

  1. Open QBDT and to go the Help menu at the top to get to the QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Select Contact Us at the bottom to connect with our live support.

When I downloaded the up to date QB, it only moved one of my companies. I bookmarked another post on how to migrate info and am looking forward to getting these issues resolved.
I need to access this for year end bookkeeping!

When I open the generic Help tab on QB ( I can't access open company file since I have no password, I do not see any contact link. It's a generic help. Make Lists; Get Paid, Pay Bills etc. and something called Little Square.

I've got you another option to reset your password, @suechef.

 

Let's use the Automated Password Reset tool so you can rest your admin password and access your company file successfully.

 

To do so:

  1. Download the Automated Password Reset tool.
  2. Select your version of QuickBooks Desktop.
  3. Enter your license number and business information.
  4. Tap Browse for Company File.
  5. Type in the correct name of your company file.
  6. Click Reset Password.

In case you still need to contact our support, I've also got you another way of reaching them since you're unable to connect via the Help menu.

 

Let me show you how:

  1. Go to the QuickBooks Official Contact Us page.
  2. Select QuickBoks Desktop.
  3. Tap Continue as a guest.
  4. Choose the QuickBooks Desktop version currently installed on your computer.
  5. Hit Search for something else.
  6. Enter Unable to reset my password in the Tell us more about your question: field.
  7. Click Start a Message.

I can provide the steps for locating the old admin password so you unlock the file when migrating it. May may start by going back to the old computer where QuickBooks was originally installed. 

 

From there, locate the password if it is stored in the OS X keychain.

 

Here's how:

 

  1. From the Finder menu, select Go, then Utilities.
  2. Double-click Keychain Access.
  3. Select Passwords from the Category list on the left side of the window.
  4. Locate the keychain with the name QuickBooks User Password. Double-click to open.
  5. Select Show Password.
  6. When prompted, enter your OS X user account password, then click Allow.
  7. Take note of the password.

 

Once you have the old password, enter it as the Migrated Administrator password during the migration. If you're unable to locate the password, reset it.

 

If still won't work, contact QuickBooks Desktop for Mac by following the steps below.

 

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. Go to Help, then hit QuickBooks Help.
  3. Click Contact Us.
  4. Give a brief description of your issue, then Continue.
  5. Sign in to your Intuit account and choose Continue and then Continue with my account.
  6. We'll email you a single-use code. Enter your code and Continue.
  7. Choose to chat with us or Have us call you.
