Updating company file after QB Desktop upgrade

We just updated our QB Desktop software from 2021 to 2023.  I have one company file that when I click on it tells me to contact the Administrator to update the file.  It never gives us the opportunity to log in.  Any suggestions what might be going on and how we can fix it?  All our other company files updated perfectly.

Updating company file after QB Desktop upgrade

Hello there, @kcathey.

I'll help you fix and avoid the error message you're getting to contact the administrator to update the file.

Since you cannot open a company file, I recommend closing the QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) app. Instead, go to the QBDT app and click the right button of your mouse. Select the Run as administrator.

Once done, if the issue persists, it would be best to contact our Customer Care team. One of our agents will help you uninstall/reinstall the program and assist you further to resolve the error.

You can follow these steps to reach out:

  1. Go to Help inside QuickBooks.
  2. Select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  3. Click Contact Us.
  4. Enter "cannot OPEN the file & get a dialog box "Update Company File for New Version" in the description field, and hit Continue.
  5. Choose Get a callback.

I'm also adding this article to help you resolve the issue if you can't open your company file: Can't open your company file in QuickBooks Desktop.

Additionally, here is an article you can read that will help you if you need to fix your QuickBooks Desktop for Windows: Repair your QuickBooks Desktop for Windows.

As far as I know, you can't fix this problem yourself. You'll need to chat with Support and ask to fix it (i.e. repair and upgrade the the file). Otherwise, you will have to purchase a third-party service to do so.
