Upgrading to 2023 Destop Pro Plus

I purchased a subscription for Desktop Pro Plus 2022 at the end of May 2022. I just got a new computer and need to transfer QB to it. I know the 2023 upgrade is available. If I upgrade now, do I have to pay for the new subscription (even though my year isn't up) or can I just wait and install the 2022 version on the new computer and upgrade when my subscription officially expires in May?

Thank you for any insight you can offer.

Hello @ks_908CoC,

Thank you for dropping by here in the Community space. I can provide some clarification about your QuickBooks Desktop subscription.

Users who subscribe to an annual subscription can download the latest version without additional charges (for Pro Plus, you can download up to Pro 2023). It's already part of your subscription that'll expire at the end of May.

It's up to you to continue using 2022 or download the 2023 version. You can look in the purchase confirmation email from Intuit for your license info or sign into your account in the Products & Services section and select the product to download. Check out this link for more information about how to download QuickBooks Desktop: Download QuickBooks Desktop.

It's also important to keep your program up-to-date with the latest features and product improvements. You can use this article to learn more about the manual and automatic processes in QuickBooks: Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.

Drop me a comment if you have additional questions about your subscription or installing QuickBooks. We're always here to help. Take care always.

@900bch

If you are located in the US or CA, you can call Sales team to purchase it. Otherwise, you can buy it through a partner for a higher price.

I can help you install your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) 2023, 900bch.

First, ensure your computer is compatible to run QuickBooks Desktop 2023. Refer to this article for more information about the requirements: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2023.

I am in the process of upgrading to QB Desktop Pro Plus 2023, but I'm stuck.  We've already purchased the upgrade and I downloaded it this morning.  Where I'm stuck is opening the company file.  I find the file, but it keeps telling me "This company file needs to be updated.  Please ask your QuickBooks Administrator to update the file.".  I did an update in our QB 2020, saved a backup and still get this same message.  What do I need to do differently?

Hi there, @Shauna D. Let's work together to get rid of the error so you can upgrade your file in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT)

I appreciate you taking the time to share the steps you've performed to fix the error. To further help you with this, let's ensure that you log in to your QBDT program as the admin user. To do so, just right-click the QBDT icon on your desktop and choose Run as Administrator. This will ensure that you have the admin privileges to access the file.

If you've already performed this and still getting the same error, we can run the QuickBooks File Doctor to detect and fix damage to your company files. Here's how:

  1. In the tool hub, click the Company File Issues option.
  2. From there, select Run QuickBooks File Doctor (it may take up to one minute for the file doctor to open).
  3. Next, choose your company file from the drop-down menu. If you don’t see it, select Browse and Search to find your file.
  4. Click Check your file (middle option only) and then, select Continue.
  5. Then, enter your QBDT admin password and click Next (scan time will depend on your file size and can take up to 10–15 minutes. The scan may say it was unsuccessful even if it fixes your issue. Once the scan finishes, open your program, and your company file).

For reference, feel free to visit this page: Fix company file and network issues with QuickBooks File Doctor.

If the error still persists, we can also utilize the verify and rebuild utility tools to rectify the update error and repair your file. Once done, close and reopen your program.

If this doesn't work, you can proceed with repairing your QBDT application to fix issues with the Windows files.

However, if you still see the same error, another solution is to perform the clean install process to refresh your QBDT program. This method requires uninstalling the software and then reinstalling it. For detailed steps, follow Step 2 of this article: Reinstall QuickBooks Desktop.

Additionally, I've added this resource to give you more details about upgrading your file, please check this article: Move your company files after you switch to a new version of QuickBooks Desktop.

You can always get back here and post other concerns you may have about upgrading your QBDT file. Have a good one and stay safe.

Divina:

Thank you so much!  I initially did every step as Administrator, but didn't know about the "run as Administrator" step or option.  I don't recall ever having done that when we upgraded in prior years.  That was the solution and I appreciate you!

Have a lovely rest of your week & be well.

My QBDT Pro 2023 continually shuts down - "quit working" - and I have to reopen. On three occasions, I've lost the view on my screen and the program will not open. Tool Hub was unsuccessful in correcting the issue.

Yesterday we (a QB advisor and I) uninstalled and reinstalled. Sure enough, within the first ten minutes, it "quit working".

This is a very dangerous situation. I have been backing up my books each half hour on the sheer chance I am going to lose my data.

@Beverly B

Try opening the sample and let it open for more than 10 minutes. Did you encounter the same problem?

Hi there, @Beverly B. I completely understand how concerning it is to experience frequent shutdowns and the possibility of data loss.

There are several possible causes why the program stops working. You may have a damaged or missing QBWUSER.INI file. You can resolve it by renaming the file. By doing so, it erases the list of your previously opened company files. You'll need to re-open your file manually.

Here's how:

  1. Open the folder where the QBWUSER.ini file is saved:  Users[Your user name]AppDataLocalIntuitQuickBooks [year]
  2. If you can't see the folder, you might need to enable hidden files and folders.
  3. Right-click the QBWUSER.ini file and select Rename.
  4. Add .old at the end of the file name (as in QBWUSER.ini.old).
  5. Rename the EntitlementDataStore.ecml file.
  6. Reopen QuickBooks Desktop.

Then, follow these steps:

  1. Attempt to open a sample company file.
  2. If it opens successfully but not your own, copy your file to a different location, preferably a local folder (avoid network locations). Open it from the new location. If your file opens without issues, the problem may be related to a damaged folder or folder permissions.
  3. If you still cannot access your file despite trying the above steps, it's likely that it's damaged. In this case, try restoring an earlier backup of the file instead.

Additionally, ensure to back up your company file regularly, as you've been doing, to safeguard your data.

If you have any further insights or observations about the shutdowns, please don't hesitate to share them with us. We genuinely appreciate your patience and understanding as we work towards a solution.
