KLM1, I agree with you completely.

How come you can't tag transactions that are split?

We should continue discussing on this thread on a weekly basis to keep this topic boosted.  I think Quickbooks really need to allow the CLASS function on every single subscription level because it was a function that was a part of the desktop version.  It is poor business practices to take it away after we have used Quickbooks for decades with this function. Or, Quickbooks can allow tags on multiple lines.  I'd be happy with either one.

Either way, they need to fix this.  And the solution is not to squeeze more money out of its customers.

Yes, I agree. I also wrote from within the Online program via the "Feedback" button. Is there an address where we could write a letter directly to management?

How come you can't tag transactions that are split?

I may have figured out a SOLUTION to this problem.  I was having the same issue and tried to figure the best/easiest way to correct this.

1.  First Categorize your expense.

2.  Then click on your "Categorized" transactions.

3.  Find your transaction and click on the purple category description to pull up the full "Bank Deposit" page - where you're able to edit the transaction.

4.  At the bottom of the page, click on "More" (it should be listed next to "Make recurring").

5.  When the pop-up window comes up, click on "Copy" (note: this may only be available for withdrawals/expenses).

6.  This should make a copy of the transaction in your bank register (note: the duplicate transaction won't show up in your "Categorized" list, but it will show up in your bank register).

7.  Click on "Go to bank register" at the top right of your transactions page.

8.  From there, you should be able to open the bank register for whichever account that the transaction was in, find the 2 transactions (1 being a copy), and you should be able to manually adjust the amount for each transaction, and also create a separate tag for each transaction.

I know other people have mentioned before about manually creating a separate transaction for the amounts that you need to split, but this may be an easier/quicker way to do so.  It also shouldn't mess up your balance, because your "Categorized" transaction should still show the total amount of that transaction.  But when you click into it, you will see it only listed for the amount that you manually entered.  This should also correctly show only that manually entered amount when you run P&L reports by tag groups.

Hope this helps!!!

I agree this functionality would be very helpful at the Line item level on split transactions.

Any ETA on providing this functionality?

Hi @djsvlh.

Currently, we're unable to provide an ETA as to when QuickBooks release this functionality for testing. I understand how crucial it is to your business to organize split transactions with tags. It will minimize workload and help you finish tasks as soon as possible.

I admire your interest in optimizing your QuickBooks experience. With that, I recommend sending feedback in QuickBooks Online. This way, our product engineers will know that businesses also needs this functionality to organize split transactions quickly.

Here's how:

  1. Click the Gear icon on the top right.
  2. Select Feedback just below Profile.
  3. Enter your product suggestion.
  4. Hit Next.

For reference about running reports for tags, see this article: Tag transactions in QuickBooks Online.

Do you also need to classify transactions? Take a peek at this guide on how to track specific income and expenses: Get started with class tracking in QuickBooks Online.

I also couldn't wait for this update to come soon. If you have other QuickBooks concerns, let me know. I'm always here to help. Take care always.

How come you can't tag transactions that are split?

I did send feedback in QB Online, before I stopped that subscription. I don't know whether to expect a response from "Feedback" but I haven't had one.

I've used classes for many years in Desktop.
I tried Online Simple Start, but ended it, because it can't work for me without either tagging split transactions or using classes.

In QB Online, it is necessary to upgrade to the Plus version at $1000/year just to have the Class function when I don't need ANY other function that is not in Simple Start.

$1000/year is unaffordable, and it's really wrong, because we had that functionality in Desktop and now it's been taken away with the conversion to Online.

And Desktop itself has suddenly become a $560/year subscription, quadrupled from $260 for a license that lasted for 2 years, so despite being a long-term QB user, I'm switching to Account Edge as soon as possible.

Besides being more affordable, they provide 3 different ways of classifying line items in split transactions.
It's a very basic accounting functionality that many people need.

The problem could be solved by turning on Classes in Simple Start and not expecting people to pay an additional $640/year if that is the ONLY function they need.

I as well have sent in "Feedback" regarding this.  I find that the answer the moderators always give is to provide the engineers feedback, but I have yet to see any implementation from the feedback I or others have given.  I haven't heard of Account Edge, but I'll check it out.  I also find the $1000 price extraordinary for being able to classify functions, something that was built into the desktop version of Quickbooks.

I agree that is a VERY BASIC accounting functionality that is needed on the basic subscription, not to be hidden behind a $1,000 price tag.

I'm getting kudos and badges for participating in this discussion and we've turned it into an advertisement for another product, Account Edge. My goodness. Does Intuit care at all?

Account Edge looks like it starts at only $15 a month.  It's great that they also allow you to classify in the way that we wish Quickbooks would.

My feedback to Quickbooks today has been to allow Class function in all tiers and/or to make it so that you can tag separate (split) line items in a payment.

To answer your question:  No, I do not think that Intuit cares about it's customers.  I have been asking for this basic functionality for quite some time now.

The solution offered here does not seem to work for an expense.  The instructions are for bank deposits.

I can share some information about adding tags to an item in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @ChimenePollard.

The option to add tags to receipts is currently unavailable. The feature to add tags to receipts or all your transactions will be a great addition to the current features that we have, so I'll take note of it.

I also encourage you to leave feedback on your account. Here are the steps:

  1. Go to the Gear icon and select Feedback.
  2. Provide your product suggestion.
  3. Click on Next to submit feedback.

You can check out this article for more information about providing feedback to make the program better: How do I submit feedback?

For more information about adding new tags and putting them to your transactions, check out this article: Tag transactions in QuickBooks Online.

Here's a helpful guide on how you can record, edit, and delete expenses: Enter and manage expenses in QuickBooks Online

Let me know if you need further information about adding tags in QBO. I'm always here to answer them for you. Keep safe, and enjoy the rest of the day!

This is great. As a contractor who orders materials for multiple jobs in one transaction, being able to add a tag to each individual line item of a split can help us better measure each job's profitability.

We are just starting with quickbooks and if tags are not available on every transaction item easily then the whole system is useless.  Doing our books just for tax is simple, but we want to actually track our business so we can better manage our business.  If quickbooks cannot do this we'll dump it.

How come you can't tag transactions that are split?

I answered some time ago in this thread, on how to tag split transactions in QBSE.

Since then everyone keeps asking the same question “how do I do it?”.

Even the QB admins don’t seem to know.

But it can be done as I do it in my QBSE.

Try looking through the answers to the original question. You will find my answer there completely ignored. That’s how you do it.

if it was linked to a bank import then it will still be linked after you split it. You should not create a new non linked transaction. If someone said you need to do that then it will be another answer that does not work like 99.999% of the answers in this thread.

Thanks for joining the thread, @sidia-buildbycon.

For me to help you with your banking concern, can you tell me about the link you're referring to? May I ask you which QuickBooks user is your reply intended for?

Any additional info would be much appreciated. Please get back to this thread and I'll be more than happy to assist you.

Thanks for joining the Community and getting involved with this thread, Bichas.

I can certainly understand how an ability to tag each individual line item on split transactions could be useful and have submitted a suggestion about it as of today.

You can also submit your own feature requests while signed in.

Here's how:

  1. Use the Gear icon, then go to Feedback.
  2. Enter your suggestion(s) in the Have feedback? window.
  3. If necessary, attach a file with your Camera icon.
  4. Select Next.

Your feedback's definitely valuable to Intuit. It will be reviewed by our Product Development team and considered in future updates. You can stay up-to-date with the latest news about your product by reviewing Intuit's Product Updates webpage.

You also have the option of checking our QuickBooks App Store for apps which may be able to help you achieve what you're looking to do.

If there's any additional questions, I'm just a post away. Have a lovely day!

How come you can't tag transactions that are split?

I appreciate you for joining this thread concerning updates in adding tags to a split transaction, @prostylo.

Currently, the option to add tags to split transactions in QuickBooks Online (QBO) is still unavailable. I can see the importance of making this available in the application as it helps track transactions most easily. Also, having this feature apply to split entries helps in running reports to see how specific areas of your business are doing.

Submitting your suggestion to our product development team would be a great way to enhance the overall functionality and usefulness of our application. Our product development team is responsible for evaluating and implementing new enhancements, so they would be better equipped to determine the feasibility and benefits of your suggestion for our users. If you think your suggestion can improve the application, I highly encourage you to submit it to our product development team.

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Select Feedback.
  3. Enter a brief description of your product suggestion.
  4. Click Next to submit feedback.

Additionally, I have included a reference to a resource that provides comprehensive instructions for running and personalizing reports.

If you're facing any issues with managing your bank transactions or organizing tags in QuickBooks, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. I'm always available to offer support and guidance in navigating the platform effectively.
