Adding tags to transactions that are split is possible, seemahundal.
After making the split, open the transaction in your bank register and assign the tag from there. Here's how:
You can also go to the Categorized tab in the Banking screen. Just look for the transaction and click on it. Then, assign the tag in the Tags section.
More details about this are discussed in these articles:

You can tag it as a whole but I want to tag each individual transaction that was split. For example, the split was an amazon purchase of inventory. I split the transactions to break down what was ordered so I can tag the items and track all year how much was spent on copy paper, for example. Or how much I spent on toner etc.
Hello @seemahundal,
As of that moment, there isn't an integrated way to assign a tag with every line item of your transactions.
But don't worry, I'll pass along your request directly to our product developers so they may include this feature for future enhancements.
On top of that, I've also included this reference so you can get the latest updates while working with us: The QuickBooks Blog.
If you have any other questions, please let me know by leaving any comments below. I'll be here to lend a hand.
I need this feature too!
Need to be able to separately tag the line items in a split transaction. Otherwise tags are of no use for me.
Is this possible yet? I need to tag split transactions, too!!
Good day, mtribble!
I understand that you also want to use the tag on split transactions. Let me join this thread so I can help you.
Unlike class tracking, the Tags feature is designed and used for the entire transaction. I encourage you to send feedback to our developers and let them know that you need it for the split transactions, too. Click the Gear icon and select Feedback.
If you haven't utilized the class tracking, you can use it instead. This is a tracking feature that allows you to assign on each line item or split transactions. After splitting the transactions, follow these steps:
Follow the steps in this article on how to set it up: Get started with class tracking in QuickBooks Online. This also shows you the different reports available by class.

I need this feature too! It would be incredibly useful for nonprofits accepting donations for multiple campaigns/projects via one payment platform (ie. paypal, stripe) who process payouts in batch. Please please please make this feature a reality. We should have the ability to tag each line in a split transactions individually, seems like a pretty basic ask and a logical course of action moving forward.
I desperately need the ability to tag each line of split transactions too.
Thanks for checking out the Community space, ACJB.
I understand that you need to add a tag to your split transactions.
While this feature is still unavailable in QuickBooks Online, you'll want to directly send feedback to our Product Development Team. At times, we roll out product enhancements based on the requests that we received from our customers. Here's how to submit feedback:
I've also some articles that you can browse to learn more about how tags work in QuickBooks Online:
Feel free to leave a comment below if you any other concerns or additional questions. Have a great rest of the day.
I need this feature as well.
Nice to have you join this thread, D-LuxEvents.
I recognized having the option to tag a split transaction can aid you in seamlessly running your business. Currently, the option to do so isn't feasible in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
As a way around, you can utilize the class tracking feature to keep track of those transactions. I'll show you how.
You can also check this link for more details: Turn on class tracking in QuickBooks Online.
Once done, you can now assign classes to your transactions. Please see this article for reference: Track your transactions by class.
Furthermore, you can also send your feedback to our Product Development team. This way, they can review your suggestion and might consider adding them in the future updates. You can refer to the steps shared by my peer above on how to submit your feedback.
In addition, I'm adding this resource that helps ensure your QuickBooks and bank balance are synced: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Online.
I'll be around if you need more help managing your transactions in QBO. Please feel free to leave the details in your reply and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Have a great weekend ahead!
I also want to see the ability to tag split transactions, especially on Checks and Expense transactions. I have a client that uses tags to track money coming in and out on specific events/activities. Some of the expenses are part of a credit card payment, which covers multiple cc transactions (so multiple accounts are used). If a tag can't be assigned to a specific line item in the expense page, what workaround can be used to tag it?
The client is on QBO Essentials, so classes is not an option (though it was an option on the lower version of QBD that the client recently migrated from). For business reasons, the client pays vendors by checks and currently a Bank Feed for the credit card is not an option.
FYI, I did submit feedback via the Feedback link in the product.
Any workaround suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Hi there, lmaklary.
Thank you for your valuable feedback. Your ideas and suggestion will help us determine what functionalities and features our customers need the most. While we're unable to put a tag on each line item, you'll want to consider entering the label in the Description field. Here's how:

The reason Quickbooks does not let you use Tags for split transactions in Basic and Essentials products is that they want you to upgrade to their more expensive "product". Tags that allow split transactions are called "Classes" and you have to pay for that premium feature to the tune of $35/month. I used classes for many years on Quickbooks Desktop Pro, but I have lost all previous years classes because I do not want to pay the extra $360 x 2 accounts = $720 a year for the next higher product containing class feature (2022 pricing).
This is no way to treat customers who have been using your software and relied on this feature for their accounts for years. Class functions should be available at all product levels.
As a note, if you need to bulk apply tags:
Banking -> Tags -> See all untagged transactions.
Next tick the transactions to be changed and click 'update tags' to add/remove tags.
Please do this! Would be so helpful as the whole point of tags is for internal reports. Would make a huge difference in being able to use the feature as intended and not being able to.
Hi there, @festivalproducer420.
Currently, the ability to add a tag on split transactions is still not available in QuickBooks Online (QBO). I can see that putting an option to do so is a great idea. I'd suggest submitting your feedback to our product engineers by following the steps below:
Another easy way to share your feedback is to enter them through this link: QuickBooks Online Feature Requests.
In the meantime, you can use the class tracking feature instead to track each line separately. To learn more about this, you can refer to this article: Track your transactions by class.
Once done, you'll want to run your report by class to keep track of each segment in your business.
You can also check out this link for guidance in categorizing your transactions efficiently: Categorize and match online bank transactions in QuickBooks Online.
You can always swing by here if you have other questions about tracking your transactions. I'm always here to help. Have a great day!
Done. If you see this submit feedback it takes 1 second!
Thx
Ladies and Gentleman,
I would like to inform you all that you can do this, it's just not very obvious at all, and also slightly fiddly.
Let's say you filtered 10 transactions that were already split. You want to tag 5 with one tag and the other 5 with a different tag.
Go into each split one-by one and tag the first 5. Save each time you tag. Now, copy the URL (web address) out of the browser tab you are in and paste it into a new tab. Go to that address. Filter your transactions again. The tags are there.
Now you need to repeat this for the other 5, in the same fashion. If you want to apply more than one tag, just repeat the same kind of steps in little batches.
It's a paint in the a** but it works eventually.
Quickbooks PLEASE add this feature. I have taken the steps listed and submitted a feedback request already!
I can't believe this isn't possible. What's the point of tags if we can't tag each individual line of a split transaction. I always thought I was missing something and just needed to figure out what to do. Please fix this!
2 years later and this feature still isn't available. I've never seen QB add in numerous features that users request. Thumbs down
It's 2 years later and this SIMPLE feature is still not available. One of many features that QB refuses to add. I won't be using QB again after this year
I have been wanting the same feature.
The only workaround that I've discovered is to exclude the original transaction and create multiple new transactions. By doing this you are able to tag each transaction individually.
For my business it's helpful to use tags for jobs I perform. This allows me to run a P&L for each job according to a quickbooks tag associated to jobs. Albeit this does produce a huge number of tags, it can help to keep them sorted in groups and use a consistent system for naming each tag.
You've doubled the price of Desktop and removed classes from the lower priced Online products (which have also increased in price, and are very expensive for a small business.)
Simple features like classes and tagging split transactions are not available unless you upgrade to a prohibitively priced product, even though I have no need of payroll, sales channels, or any of the robust features of the more expensive levels.
I only need to tag or classify each transaction (aside from accounts, which are now mislabeled "categories") and you've taken this away for no reason.
Horrible way to treat your long-time customers.
