I have quickbooks pro 2014, looking to switch to self employed, can I import my quickbooks backup into self employed quickbooks?

Hello, motorcycletunes-.

I'll throw in some helpful information about switching over to a different QuickBooks version.

Both QuickBooks Desktop Pro and QuikcBooks Self-Employed are two different systems. The former is intended for small business owners while the latter is for freelances that handle Schedule C forms.

We're unable to directly import a QuickBooks Desktop backup data into QuickBooks Self-Employed. What you can do is to bring in your bank transactions so you can categorize them for the Schedule C form.

There are two ways to do this. You can import them using an Excel file (good for both older or newer transactions) or use the Online Bank Feeds feature (for transactions not exceeding more than 90 days).

Check these articles for a guide:

As for your backup data, you can keep it as a record or archive in case of a tax audit.

If the Self-Employed version won't work for your business needs, you can consider the Online version instead. Check this article for a guide: Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online.

You might want to use a trial version for the import process since the 2014 edition is already unsupported.

If you still want to continue with the Self-Employed version, you can start categorizing your transactions for the estimated taxes.

If you have more questions about the program versions, please let me know. I'm happy to go over each one and help you out.

@motorcycletunes-

You can only migrate data from QBD to QBO, not QBSE. Utilize the trial license of QBD 2021 to upgrade your file and migrate it to QBO.

@jksweatt

If you are using QBO, you need to convert your file to QBW to get the TXF file. Otherwise utilize the trial version of a bookkeeping app to export the TXF file directly from your QBO account.

Thank you for joining this thread, jksweatt.

I'll share some information to ensure you're able to transfer your QuickBooks Online Data to Turbo Tax.

The option to transfer data from QBO to TurboTax is unavailable. Only the data from QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE) can be converted or sent to TurboTax Online.

In the meantime, you'll need to download a free trial of QuickBooks Desktop first. From there, you can use this when exporting your data.

Once done downloading the product, you can now export QuickBooks Online to QuickBooks Desktop. After that, you can transfer your Quickbooks data into TurboTax:

Here's how:

  1. From the TurboTax File menu, select Import.
  2. Then click From Accounting Software.
  3. Select QuickBooks (2021) and click Continue.
  4.  Follow the onscreen instructions.

You can check out this article for more information: Import QuickBooks data into TurboTax Business.

Please check this article to see what are the limitations when moving from QuickBooks Online to QuickBooks Desktop and how your data converts between the two of them: Limitations when you convert from QuickBooks Online to QuickBooks Desktop.

Feel free to post an update in the comments section or if you need further assistance. I'll be here to lend a helping hand. Have a great day!

Hello, ChezRene 7.

Thanks for joining us in this thread. I'll reiterate and share the details with you on how you can import your QuickBooks Pro 2014 data.

Just like what I mentioned on my previous reply, QuickBooks Pro 2014 is a different platform so we're unable to import your backup to the Self-Employed version.

To further reiterate, you'll want to consider importing your bank transactions when you switch to the Self-Employed platform.

This can be done through a manual process (for old transactions) or through a direct connection (for recent transactions).

I'd also like to add that if the Self-Employed version isn't for you, you can consider using QuickBooks Online instead. Unlike Self-Employed, you'll be able to import your QuickBooks Pro 2014 data to the Online version.

Though, this import process is done using a supported version of QuickBooks Desktop. Use a trial version if you want to go with this method for your 2014 data.

If you still want to use the Self-Employed platform, I would recommend checking out this article to help you categorize your transactions: Categorize transactions in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

Need help taking care of your estimated taxes? Feel free to use this article as your guide: Pay federal estimated quarterly taxes in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

You're always welcome to ask questions if you have other concerns transferring your data. It'll be my pleasure to give you important information about the Self-Employed (and other versions) platform.

You can only migrate data from QB Desktop to QB Online, not QBSE.
