My previous account manager gave me a QBB file. How can I import that file to my new QB online account?

Thanks for joining us here in the Community, @gwarner.

Let me share with you some information about importing the QBB file in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

First off, QuickBooks Online imports only QBO, CSV, OFX, and QFX file formats. Thus, you're unable to import QBB file directly to QuickBooks Online.

As a workaround, we can download a QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) trial version then use it to migrate or import the QBB file to your QuickBooks Online account.

You'll want to refer to this article for the links to download the QBDT trial versions: How can I download the QuickBooks Desktop trial version?. Before you begin, ensure that your computer meets the minimum requirements to install QuickBooks: What are the system requirements for QuickBooks Desktop?.

Once done, let's proceed importing your file from QBDT to QBO. Make sure that your QuickBooks is up-to-date and not too big in file size. This is to ensure the smooth import process. Below are the steps on how to import your file from QBDT to QBO:

  1. You'll need to log in as an admin to the company file you need to import.
  2. Go to the Company menu then choose Export Company File to QuickBooks Online.
  3. Select Start your export.

After that, let's log in to your QuickBooks Online account. Then follow the steps below:

  1. If you track inventory in QuickBooks Desktop:
-Select Yes to bring them over, then specify the as of date.
-Tap No if you want to set up new items later in QuickBooks Online. Please note that only QuickBooks Online Plus and Advanced can track inventory because both plans use the FIFO method.

     2. Click the Choose online company▼ dropdown then pick the QuickBooks Online company you want to be replaced by your company file.

    3. Tap Continue then enter “Agree” in the text field.

    4. Choose the Replace option then click Yes.

     5. Hit Yes, go ahead and replace the data, then select Replace.

Lastly, you can refer to this article for more information about the steps above: How can I import my files from QBDT to QBO?.

Also, you'll want to learn how to customize your reports in QuickBooks so you can get personalized details for your reports: How do I customize my reports in QBO?.

Please let me know if you need help or have questions with importing your files to QuickBooks Online. I'll be always here to back you up. Stay safe and have a good one, @gwarner.

My previous account manager gave me a QBB file. How can I import that file to my new QB online account?

hi John, thanks so much for your answer.  I did download the trial version and set up a skeleton of my company but in the process I got a message that I would need to call the company and exchange the one I had downloaded to the "American" Version since I am in the U.S.  Is there no way to download the AMERICAN version as a trial?  I chose "QB Pro" when I was on the download page.  Any advice appreciated.

@gwarner

Can you share the screenshot of that message? If the QBB file is created on any QBD US version 2013 or later, you should be able converting it on trial license of QBD 2020 US Pro or Enterprise. Then you may migrate the data to QBO US version.

To make sure, restore the QBB file on trial license of QB Desktop 2020 CA version.

How can I get a trial of the QBD Pro US?  None of the ones I can find online specify that they are the US version and every download I do has that warning.
