Thanks for responding quickly. After reading about how other users solved their QB Amex download problem, I removed the feed from QuickBooks, then recreated it, and it worked. This seems to be a fairly common issue; users should not have to fix it this way or be sent to Amex to try to resolve the problem.
I'll try rebuilding my data file to see if that fixes the other recurring issues when I have a chance I've already spent too much time the last several days trying to fix QB issues and need to focus on running my business.
Has this been resolved? I am still having this issue my Amex transactions will not download!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELP
Thanks for reaching out to us, MICHELLET20.
We can update your Bank Feeds if you're using the QuickBooks Desktop. This helps to bring in those Amex transactions to QuickBooks. Here's how to update it:
You'll want to check this article about downloading bank feed transactions.
If you're using the QuickBooks Online, I'd suggest contacting our Customer Support Team. We have a new case about Amex transactions that aren't downloading.
To reach out to them:

Make sure you log out and log back in after dis-associating and before re-associating. Fixed my problem!
I receive the same error code OL304 - I DID contact Amex. Spent half an hour verifying what I already knew - there have been no changes to my account with American Express. They stated this has been an ongoing issue and that it would require Quickbooks support to resolve the issue. They even stated there was a chat area specifically for this AMEX issue. I haven't found that, obviously. They first sent me to a Quicken chat link. What a cluster. In any case, this started three months ago. It worked perfectly for a year prior to the day it gave me the first error. Error also states it is "Temporary" ....what is the solution for this? I need this to work - it is a critical time-saver and I don't have time to manually enter a dozen business Amex cards total transactions! Thanks.
Hi there, Rosemary.
The error your getting may be caused by one of the following:
A problem with one or more accounts in your company file.
A discontinued version of Windows or QuickBooks Desktop.
A problem with the download or import format.
A problem with your Internet connection.
Let's perform the steps below in the order listed to resolve the issue. I also suggest retrying to download your transaction after each step before you move to the next.
First, enable TLS 1.2 in the latest version of Internet Explorer.
Here's how:
1. Open Internet Explorer 11 and make sure you have the latest version installed.
2. Select the Gear icon at the upper right section of Internet Explorer.
3. Go to Internet Options and select Advanced tab.
4. Choose the Security section.
5. Uncheck the USE TLS 1.0 and checkmark in USE TLS 1.2.
6. Hit the Apply and then, OK.
7. Close all open programs and restart the computer.
If you receive the same error, continue following the steps below.
Create a new test company file to help determine if the issue originates with your bank or their servers.
1. Select File menu. Then, New Company.
2. Choose Express Start.
3. In the newly created test company, add the bank account which was experiencing issues and set up the account for Bank Feeds.
4. You can Download Bank Feed transactions to test the account.
If you receive the same error: This means that there is a problem at your bank. Proceed to Step 6.
If you do NOT receive any error : This indicates that the problem is not with your bank. Please continue to Step 3.
Please refer this article for the steps on how to fix issues when downloading or importing transactions: Fix OL and OLSU Bank Feeds errors in QuickBooks Desktop.
Please let me know how it goes. We'd want to make sure you're able to download your AMEX transactions.
I just upgraded to QB 2020 Desktop Pro after manually entering Amex transactions for years. That was the main reason I even upgraded. I can download them fine and open the download file. But when I get the box that says to select the account to import the transactions to, the Amex account is not listed in the drop down menu. This is the box you get after you click "import transactions now". I've tried automatically importing, manually importing, and I hit the refresh thing. I see the Amex account in the box on the left when I go to the banking center. This is a well established account. I have no idea why it doesn't show up on the pull down menu as an existing account. I had no idea there were issues with Amex syncing until I started reading this thread. I hope you can help. I'm not getting an actual error message.
Oh, I should add, I also went through the whole thing in bank center when you set up the initial sync. I typed in American Express, logged into my amex account, and then it said select account from menu or create new. My other bank and credit cards were listed, but not Amex.
Hello there, erdooley,
There might be an error on the name list. You can resolve this by creating a dummy account and merging it with the existing AMEX account.
Here's how:
Merge account:
Then, go back to the import transaction process.
Let me know if you need anything else,
I really thought this was going to work, but it didn't. I merged the accounts like you said, and then set up the bank feed by logging into Amex. When it asked for me to select my account, the newly merged account was in the list, so I thought all was well! Went and downloaded the transactions. When i opened the file, instead of just giving me the "import transactions now" screen, I got the box asking me to select the account from a drop down menu.
It lists Financial Inst - Amex web connect
Type of account - Credit card
Then the account number
Under that is says "QB does not have an online account to handle these transactions."
Below that is asks me to select the account from a drop down menu. In this particular menu the Amex account was NOT listed. Ugh.
Thanks for getting back to us with additional details, erdooley.
It looks like all possible troubleshooting steps that we can share in the Community has already been provided in this thread.
In this case, we recommend contacting our phone support team. They' ll double-check everything to determine why you're getting the error even if the Amex account is already added in your Chart of Accounts.
Here's how:
Please take note that our phone support line is open from Monday to Friday, in between 6 AM to 4 PM Pacific Tome. They're also open during Saturdays from 6 AM to 1 PM Pacific Time.

As of yesterday American Express told me they anticipate a 2-3 week timeframe before this issue is resolved. Tricky for those of us who need to upload information. :(
Has anyone had resolution to AmEx not syncing with QBO? My AmEx balance appears correct in QB; however, no transactions have downloaded since 2/13/2020. I called last week and was told that QB was working on it. Here we are a week+ later and it's still not working. This is the 2nd time I've run into this issue. Back in Dec/Jan, I had the same problem. This is ridiculous!!
Hello there, SoFLGal.
I've checked our records here and found out that this investigation is still in progress. As of now, we haven't received any updates to when this will be resolved. Rest assured, our engineers are doing their best to rectify the issue as soon as possible. Since you already contacted our technical supports, your account detail is already added to our notification list. We'll be sending you an email once we get this sorted out and I'll also let you know through this thread.
For now, we can manually upload your bank transactions to your QuickBooks account. You can go to your bank's website and follow the instructions on how to download them. As of now, these are our supported file formats:
Here's how to upload the file:
Once done, let's go back to the Banking menu to match and categorize your bank transactions.

It is now March 2020, and I continue to bang my head on this. We have 4 Amex cards. We used to be able to import the main cardholders using the QBO. The others, we had to manually jimmy rig this and import using a JE. WHAT IS GOING HERE? ITS A SIMPLE IMPORT? AND YOU ARE MAKING OUR LIVES DIFFICULT. UPDATE PLEASE?
Seems still not syncing beyond a few months for Amex. Crazy incompetent. I quit Mint years ago for this exact issue. Looks like same tech and never fixed. Been recommended Xero - going to see if any better.

When is Quickbooks going to fix this Amex problem. I will be canceling my subscription until it is rectified. ALL my business is done on AMEX cards - for 2019 there are 3 - I really don't want to be bothered with manual uploads. This program is supposed to make things easier and not harder. From what I've read your manual fixes are not good and people are frustrated. So I will not be doing this. I cannot waste any more time with QB. What a disappointment.
I have the same issues with Quickbooks. American Express doesn't sync most of the time. Sadly Amex gives better tech support than Quickbooks does. The issue took months to get resolved and then came back again for me, QB still has not solved it. This is the last straw for me as well. Its time to move on.
I too had this problem. Read the entire thread with a lot of useless suggestions (mostly from QB).
Just got this to work -- and was very glad I didn't have to manually enter 303 transactions.
I went to
Backup a Local Copy of my QB
Help | Update Quickbooks Desktop
Went to the "Update Now" tab.
Clicked "Get Updates"
Did this a couple of times until things were all updated with the current date / time
Ran the update.
Restarted QB - got logged in.
Tried again -- Same 304 error.
One of the suggestions in this thread said to disconnect the feed and reconnect.
So I unlinked the account
Then set up the bank feed again
And it WORKED!
Not sure if all the updates helped with this endeavor or just the reconnection to the American Express bank feed did the trick.
Phew.
Thanks! I removed and then reenabled the Amex account from Bank Feeds as you suggested. It literally took 45 seconds....
As always, QB support proved useless.
The manual upload is still not working the error message reads "QuickBooks is unable to verify the Financial Institution information for this download. Please try again later."
My understanding is that Intuit holds the banks hostage for the bank identity code fee Intuit Charges the banks. So if AMEX doesn't pay Intuit's fee, then the code for the Amex bank will not work with bank feeds. You have to manually edit the bank institution code to one who has paid Intuit the ransom.
Follow the procedure that I wrote ... 2 entries above. It worked then and I just now downloaded more transactions.
Good luck.
Is this happening again? I haven't been able to connect to one of my American Express accounts for 7 days now, but the other American Express account is no problem.
I'm here to get the help you deserve about the American Express connection, DecaturInvestor.
Are you receiving an error when trying to connect Amex to QuickBooks Online (QBO)?
We didn't receive any reports about not being able to connect to AMEX account. For now, you can consider uploading your AMEX transaction manually in QuickBooks Online. Here's how:
You can read this article for more details: Manually upload transactions into QuickBooks Online.
You might want to check out this article to learn how to match transactions: Categorize and match online bank transactions.
Keep in touch if you need any more assistance with this, or if there's something else I can do for you. I've got your back. Have a good day.
No, I don't want to do that. No errors. As I have said it just stopped working.
