Can't Import my banks .QBO

Using Quickbooks 19 For Mac V18.0.4 R5 Build 3282

I'm banking with BMO and go to the online banking and download the QBO.  I then open quickbooks > online banking > Import a QBO Statement > select "statement.qbo"

I then get the error:  :Quickbooks was not able to complete your request.

Please contact your finanical institution.

I don't know what to do.  Any help?

Can't Import my banks .QBO

When you go to Banking->Online banking set up is BMO listed among the banks that support QuickBooks?  If not you are out of luck.

Can't Import my banks .QBO

Hi GSDrisco,

Thank you for posting here in the Community. I can help you import the file from your bank in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

This error message usually occurs when our system didn't receive a valid response from your bank's server. We may need to correct invalid formatting on the bank file to fix the issue.

Before doing so, let's make sure to update your QuickBooks to the latest release and create a company backup copy. For the detailed steps, I'm adding the article I recommend on this (scroll down to Solution 1):

Error: OL-222 after downloading a Web Connect file from an approved bank.

Once done, you can now proceed with correcting invalid formatting by checking invalid characters on the QBO file. You'll also see the steps from the article attached above (scroll down to Solution 2).

In case it didn't work, please follow the remaining solutions. I'm always here if ever you need further help concerning the error message.

Can't Import my banks .QBO

 Hello ST999,

Though the troubleshooting steps provided above are for Mac users, the explanation about the error is the same. Before we do any troubleshooting steps, I'd recommend creating a backup copy of your company file and updating your QuickBooks Desktop release version.

Aside from not receiving a valid response from the financial institution's server, unsupported characters in the .QBO file can also cause this error. Here's how we can edit the file:

  1. Right-click the .QBO file and select Edit.
  2. Select any text editor app to open the file.
  3. Find and remove &amp from the text as it is an invalid character.
  4. Save the file again.

Another way to edit the .QBO file is through Excel. You can search a QBO to CSV converter online. After editing the file, make sure to convert it back to .QBO file format.

Once everything is set, you can import the file again to QuickBooks Desktop.

If the same thing happens, I'd recommend reaching out to our Technical Support Team. They can review your file and ensure you can import the banking transactions. Here's how to reach them:

  1. Click Help at the top menu and select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. In the Have a Question? window, select Contact us.
  3. Go to the first section and enter the details of your concern.
  4. Click Search and move to the second section.
  5. Select how you want to interact with them (phone or chat).

If you encounter any unexpected results, please let us know.

Can't Import my banks .QBO

Hi JamesDuanT,

Thanks for getting back to me.

I opened the QBO in Notepad but can't find any &amp. Also the transactions are all in one line, no line space in between. Is that an issue.

Can I know if <INTU.BID>00001 is for Bank of Montreal? Where I can find the code for each bank?

Does this code looks right <DTPOSTED>[removed]18 or should it be <DTPOSTED>[removed]18.000[-5] ?

Thanks.

Can't Import my banks .QBO

Hi JamesDuanT,

Thanks for getting back to me.

I opened the QBO files with Notepad and didn't find any &amp.

I do have a question on the INTU.BID number, the file I downloaded shows (INTU.BID)00001. Is this correct for Bank of Montreal?

Also should the date be (TPOSTED)[removed]18 or (TPOSTED)[removed]18.000[-5] ? Does it matter?

Thanks.

Can't Import my banks .QBO

I appreciate trying out the steps provided by my colleague, @ST999.

We can verify this further by editing the file using Excel instead of a Notepad. You can search for an available converter to do this (qbo to csv). Once done, you can check and edit the invalid characters again (&amp) and import the finalized file.

Also, to verify the codes in the file, I'd recommend consulting with your bank. Since they are providing the .QBO file download, they need to check this to ensure they are following the OFX guidelines.

You may also check this related article for more details: Error: OL-222 after downloading a Web Connect file from an approved bank.

Also, for additional assistance, it'd be best to reach out to our Desktop Support as suggested by my colleague.

Keep me posted if you have other questions. I'm here to help however I can. Have a good one.
