How can I reconcile my checking account when i have a deposit that was deleted intentionally, due to an error, but the beginning balance is now messed up?

I have a deposit that was entered in error. I deleted it but now when i try to reconcile, QB tells me my beginning balance is off. The actual running balance DOES balance with my online account, but I can't figure out how to correct this beginning balance issue without actually throwing off my running balance and it really NOT balance with my bank. Am I making sense? I sure hope so! I've been trying to get through to support for about 1.5 months now and it keeps saying "5 minutes." An hour later, QB logs out due to inactivity. Appreciate any input.

I'll help you with reconciling the bank account, Bruce-derouen.

When you deleted the deposit, it caused the beginning balance to be off. Since it was intentionally deleted, so this means that the transaction is not part of the previous reconciliation. Having said that, we'll have to unreconcile and reconcile the previous period again. This way, QuickBooks Online will recognize the accurate and new balance.

When you undo a reconciliation, you'll have to edit each transaction. Here's how:

  1. Click Accounting, then go to the Chart of Accounts tab.
  2. Select the bank account, then click View register.
  3. Select the transaction you want to unreconcile.
  4. Select the box where you can see R, then continue clicking until it's blank.
  5. Click Save

Once done, reconcile the bank account again. The beginning balance on the current period should be correct by then.

How can I reconcile my checking account when i have a deposit that was deleted intentionally, due to an error, but the beginning balance is now messed up?

Hi Kristine!

Thanks for the reply. While this exact procedure didn't quite do it for me, it did lead me in the right direction. You said for me to unreconcile that transaction, but since it had been deleted, I couldn't get back to it to edit it at all.

However what it did make me realize was to look at the replacement transaction. (I had deleted the transaction and reentered it.)  Well, with the reentered transaction, i had "cleared" it, but I hadn't "reconciled" it. so all I did was mark it as reconciled and voila! It balances!  Frustrating to realize the solution was that simple!  (it usually is!)

Thanks for your help!  I appreciate it!

Thanks for chiming in on this thread, Kathy 72.

Let me add some additional info regarding your situation.

Going to the Accounting > Chart of Accounts is the fastest way where you can find transactions that are reconciled or cleared. Before making any changes on the past reconciled transactions, please reach out to your accountant. The process can get tricky and they know how to handle the next steps. Don't have an accountant? We can help you find one.

If you need to undo the past reconciliations and delete the deposit, you can follow the steps shared by my colleague Kristine Mae. Here's also an article for reference: Undo or remove transactions from reconciliations in QuickBooks Online. Otherwise, ask your accountant to undo the entire reconciliation. Then, remove the deposit and reconcile the account again.

I'm adding these articles to help you with the process:
