You have two options:
1. Head to the banking tab and select the account you'd like to remove.
2. Click the edit button, and go to "Edit account info."
3. Check the box next to "Disconnect this account on save."
4. Save and Close.
Alternatively, you may follow these steps:
1. Go to Accounting --> Chart of Accounts.
2. On the right side of the line for the account in question, click the down arrow next to "View register."
3. Check "Make inactive."
4. Click Yes.

You can go to the Chart of Accounts and delete your mistakenly connected personal bank account from there. Let me guide you through the steps.
However, if this is connected to online banking, you can disconnect it from the Banking page. Here's how:

This is all well & good but the bank account is showing up in the Balance Sheet at year end. And it just has the word "deleted" next to it. Do the transactions themselves have to be deleted one by one?

In QuickBooks Online once you deleted an account the transactions will still remain. So I agree with you, when you want to remove those transactions you have to clear it manually.
Please keep in mind that deleting a transaction is irreversible.
