I received a new credit card on an existing account. I have added it but can't seem to link it to the old account. Any advice?

My accountant said to "link" it to the old account, but I can only seem to add it as a subcategory of that account. Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks for reaching out to the Community forum, mallabastro.

Let me get the help you need in connecting a credit card in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

To get started, you'll have to determine how your bank sends the downloaded transaction. If the transactions download to one account, then only connect the parent account. But if the transactions download to the individual accounts, then you'll have to connect them both..

For more details, check this article: About Bank Or Credit Card Sub-account Setup.

Thanks MirriamM.  I am still a bit confused though because the first explanation is referencing multiple credits cards, but I am trying to understand how to add a replacement card for the same account.  It is all the same login information, but the account number has changed as of a certain date.  Do I just add a new account from the start date or try to make a sub account?  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi mallabastro!

I'd be happy to clarify the process.

Since you got a replacement card, you'll want to unlink the previous connection. Then, link the new CC account to the existing CC register, so the transactions will just continue to post in there. However, you may also create a new CC register (account) where you link the card it depending on what you like. But before doing anything, please add or match any pending transactions in the For Review tab coz they will be gone after unlinking your account.

  1. Go to Banking on the left pane, then select Banking at the top.
  2. Choose your CC account and click Edit (pencil icon).
  3. Click Edit account info.
  4. In the Account window, check the box next to Disconnect this account on save.
  5. Click Save and Close.

For references about online banking, please check out this page: QuickBooks Q & A. Then, select Banking.

Please don't hesitate to go back to this thread if you have other questions about connecting your new CC account. Have a good one!

When adding a replacement credit card account to your active bank feeds in QuickBooks Desktop, you'll initially need to make sure you've finished matching or deleting all of its downloaded transactions.

Afterwards, you can disconnect the account.

Here's how:

  1. In your top menu bar, go to Lists, then Chart of Accounts.
  2. Right-click the account you want to deactivate, then choose Edit Account.
  3. Access your Bank Settings tab and select Deactivate all online services, then OK.
  4. Hit Save & Close.

Now you'll be prepared to connect the replacement card with Direct Connect.

Please don't hesitate to send a reply if there's any additional questions. Have a wonderful day!
