In quickbooks desktop how to I download more than one bank account from the the same bank

I have Quickbooks Pro 2021 for desktop

I have two separate checking accounts at the same bank.  I have already been downloading the information from one of the accounts.  Now I want to download the information from the other account.  I have read that I need to set them up as subaccounts.  Do I need to disconnect the first account and then set both of them up as subaccounts?

Good afternoon, @meshmash

Thanks for reaching out to the Community for support. I hope you're enjoying the day so far. I'm happy to lend a hand with your bank feeds using two accounts.

You're on the right track. You'll need to disconnect the current bank feed connection, then add the accounts as subaccounts. Once you have them set up as subaccounts, you can connect them both to the bank. One important thing to note, you'll need to ensure both accounts have the same login since it's the same bank. For example, you'd need both user names as meshmash, not meshmash1 and meshmash2.  I've included some steps to help you disconnect the current account and add both subaccounts below.

  1. Open your Chart of Accounts and locate the currently connected account.
  2. Right-click on the account and hit Edit
  3. Under the Bank Feed Settings tab, tap the Deactivate All Online Services option and Save and Close

Now let's add the subaccounts.

  1. Add a main account, such as Main Bank.
  2. Add another new account, and check off the Subaccount of box and choose your Main Bank.
  3. Do the same thing with the second subaccount.

You can see Get started with Bank Feeds for QuickBooks Desktop for steps to connect the accounts.

That's all there is to it. Please let me know if you have additional questions or concerns. I'm happy to lend a hand. As always, feel free to reach out to the Community at any time. Take care and have a great day ahead!

so the one part I still don't understand is that both sub accounts have to have the same login.  On the actual bank site they have different logins. So in order to do this the login on the bank site has to be the same?

Let me add some information about connecting bank accounts for online banking, meshmash.

Yes, you need to have the same login credentials when you're setting up a parent and sub-accounts.

In  your case, you can separately set up each checking account in QuickBooks since they have different login information.

QuickBooks allows just one sign-in per bank. You can refer again to this link for more details: Get started with Bank Feeds for QuickBooks Desktop.

If you need to reconcile, here are the detailed steps: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Desktop.

Stay in touch if you need additional information about this by commenting below. I'll be right here to help you.

In quickbooks desktop how to I download more than one bank account from the the same bank

Hello, I have the same situation but I do have the same login for both accounts. My question before I try this solution is that my bank will not actually connect to QB. I have to download a file with the transactions then import it to QB. I can download one file per account so my question is; If I import the file for the sub-account it will merge with the principal account or it will be in a different section?

I have QB desktop for Mac.

Thank you,

Katherine Melo Steed.

Welcome to the Community, mathusteed.

I'll share some important details about importing bank transactions in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

When importing a chart of accounts, make sure the Type and Detail Type matches the types available in QuickBooks Online, including capitalization. Also, when adding sub-accounts, you'll need to use the parent account followed by a colon and the sub-account name.

You can refer to this article for more information: Import and export data in QuickBooks.

I've added an article that provides you the list of new features that the system offers: What's new in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2020. It contains information about dark mode, modernized reporting, and company snapshots name a few.

I'd like to work with you again if you have further questions about importing bank transactions. Take care and enjoy your day.

Good day, @Mikelietzke.

I'd be glad to help accomplish your task in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

Yes, you can add a sub-account to your parent checking account in QuickBooks. However, you can't connect both accounts on the Online Banking page. If you try to connect both, you’ll get a message that the account is already connected.

If the transactions download to one account, connect only the parent account. If the transactions download to the individual accounts, connect the subaccounts and not the parent account.

Here's how to add a sub-account in QBDT:

  1. Go to Lists and select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Click the Account drop-down list, then choose New.
  3. Create another account, then check the Subaccount of box and choose your parent account.
  4. Fill out its details and select Save & Close.

After you set up your accounts for bank feeds, you can start downloading transactions from your banks. For more info, you can check out this article: How to download bank feed transactions in QBDT.

Once your transactions are in QuickBooks, it's time to match them to the ones you entered in QuickBooks. That way, you can tell what transactions your financial institution has processed and which ones haven’t cleared the bank yet.

I’m always ready to assist you if you have any other questions or concerns about managing your bank transactions. Tag me in your reply and I’ll sprint back into action. Have a good one and keep safe.
