I guess my point is for those who purchased 2019 and are existing customers. . .you would assume that Intuit would treat existing customers as a priority! Instead, the new versions are OS11 ready. I get it, Intuit is in business to make money and the idea is to motivate existing customers to upgrade. The tired explanation you used that implies it takes time to get all of the versions upgraded is both insulting and dimwitted. The Big Sur OS has been available for testing for a good amount of time and many of our other software programs alerted us as prior to the release of BIG SUR, that they were compatible. The Big Sur update for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2019 shipped yesterday. QuickBooks->Check for Updates should show it if you are running it on the Big Sur macOS.

When you say shipped what do you mean.

Will I be able to upgrade thru the "upgrade" section on line?

Thanks for following this thread, half dome.

As mentioned by @IntuitBrooks, the Big Sur update for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2019 was already released yesterday. Let's download the latest maintenance release to get it.

Here’s how:

  1. Tap the QuickBooks drop-down to select Check for QuickBooks Updates.
  2. If a newer version is available, choose Install Update.
  3. When prompted, select Install and Relaunch.
  4. QuickBooks for Mac automatically opens when the update is complete.

For more insights into this process, see the Update QuickBooks for Mac to the latest release guide. In regard to your other concern, may I know if you’re referring to upgrading to another QuickBooks Desktop for Mac version?

If yes, let me share this link to view the features and benefits of the product. However, if you’re referring to something else, any additional details you can share can help me get on the same page.

For future reference, the following article provides an overview of the features and enhancements available in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2019: What's new.

I’ll be looking forward to hearing from you soon. Enjoy the rest of the day.

Is the Big Sur compatible version of QuickBooks Mac 2019 R8.1? That is what I have and the message I get is that I am up to date.

I just tried to update my QuickBooks Mac 2019. The message says I have QuickBooks 18.0.7.3386 R8.1 and that I am up to date. Is that the Big Sur compatible version? Thanks.

Hello there,

We're working very hard to ensure our supported versions of QuickBooks for Mac will work as designed and hope to have this completed very soon. You can check out this article for more detail about Intuit’s support policy for QuickBooks for Mac running on macOS 11 Big Sur.

Let me know if you have other questions. Take care and have a great day!

I get the same message:

QuickBooks 18.0.7.3386 R8.1 is currently the newest version available.

Is there an update to this version that I don't have?  I don't want to upgrade to Big Sur if it's not compatible.

I can share some updates about the macOS 11 Big Sur compatibility, johnl1.

You're not missing any updates. The message you encountered indicates that the latest version of your QuickBooks Desktop was already installed. Please know that only QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2021 R3, 2020 R6, and its later versions are currently compatible with Big Sur.

As of the moment, our engineers are still testing the other versions against Big Sur to identify any issues that need to be addressed. For now, you'll want to consider not upgrading yet to macOS 11 Big Sur to avoid unusual behaviors in the program.

Rest assured, you'll be updated through email or in-app notifications once we get this sorted out. By that time, you may now upgrade your operating system to Big Sur. Additionally, I encourage visiting our blog from time to time to stay current with our latest product updates and news.

Keep me posted if you have any other concerns or additional questions. I'll be more than happy to help you again. Happy Holidays!

So now we are more confused then before. Above  RASA-LILAM, EMP posted it had been released and then I read your reply and what do we now have? Does anybody have a consistent answer from Intuit??

Evidently your fellow employees disagree with you. Read the stream. So who is correct and who is full of misinformation?

The latest updates of 2019, 2020, and 2021 are Big Sur compatible. In order to get the 2019 Big Sur update out as soon as possible we only tested it on Big Sur. For that reason you will only get notified of it if you are running on Big Sur.

In all cases run QuickBooks->Check For Updates to apply the latest. If you are on 2019 and upgrade to Big Sur run QuickBooks->Check For Updates again once you have finished the Big Sur update.

We'll push another update to 2019 once we qualify everything for earlier macOS versions. The 2019 version runs on five different macOS.

IntuitBrooks,

Thanks!  Finally some specific progress on 2019.  However, I'm a bit suspicious of this approach as many of the complaints I've seen about 2019 on Big Sur is that it won't start.  When that happens, how do you "check for updates"?

Is there a way to manually download the update, and then apply it after the update if QB 2019 won't start?  The only manual downloads I'm seeing are for R18(8), which is not Big Sur compatible.

One last point.  I spent hours looking through posts to find this.  Can Intuit update some of their official pages to reflect this process?   These make no mention of it:

https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/print-checks/system-requirements-for-quickbooks-de...

or this one:

https://downloads.quickbooks.com/app/qbdt/products?productName=QuickBooks%20Mac%20Desktop&edition=&v...

Which downloads the version that runs on Catalina R18(8).

Hello there, DaveCanp.

The 2019 update is now compatible with Big Sur, as mentioned by IntuitBrooks. You'll only need to ensure that QuickBooks Desktop for Mac is up-to-date.  You can either use the link you've shared above when updating the program, or you can download the latest releases by going to QuickBooks. Then, click Check for QuickBooks Updates.

This update may haven't added to the article yet, 2019 is already compatible with Big Sur.

Let me know if you have other questions. Stay safe and be well.

I know this isn't an easy fix, but what I do is create a VM (using parallels or similar) and i have a copy of big sur loaded on that and then i load QB's on that to see if it works.

A pain, yep, but not hard and for a mission-critical biz app, to me its worth it.

Thanks and good luck!

Alchemic,

I'm certainly capable of doing that, although I assume that many who use QB are not.  It's a lot of time and money to do something I've paid Intuit for.  Aside from that, checking software requires significant regression testing, just loading it up and seeing if it "works" is not really a fix.   I expect Intuit to spend some amount of time testing/correcting, but this is entirely too long, especially since it's been in beta for months, and a big company like Intuit should have automated test tools.

In all my years of working with computers, I've never seen "end-user" software that would provide an update like this, where you do the OS upgrade first, then see if there is an update for the software.  Not that I don't trust a support/user forum, or the moderators here,  I'd be much more confident that this was a proper path forward if it were an "official" upgrade path.  Either with a mention on the web site itself, or in release notes online.

The latest upgrade I just got today (V18.0.9 R10) has support for 1099-NEC forms.  So now I wonder if the version that supports Big Sur has that feature in it.  But alas, there is nowhere on Intuit's site that have the release notes for the version of QB MAC 2019 that supports Big-Sur.  (I assume that's V19 something, but who knows.)  The ONLY mention I can find of that version is in this thread.

Speaking of 1099-NEC forms, I've had my actual forms for 2 weeks.  We've known they were required again for over a year.  Yet the Quickbooks desktop for Mac 2019 just started support for them today, but that's another story....

So much for getting some pro-active work done over the holidays when I had some spare time.

Hey there, @kylco.

Thanks for following the thread. I hope you're enjoying the day so far.

Currently, the 2019 R8 is the most recent release available for download. However, our R10 will come available this month. An update message will appear inside of your QuickBooks, along with an email notification once the R10 has been released.

You can download the new release from:

Check out whats new to come in the R10 in Recent changes, improvements and fixes in QuickBooks Mac Desktop 2019.

Please let me know if there is anything else that I can do for you. I'll be here every step if the way. Take care and have a great weekend!

2019 R10 is the most recent release. Run QuickBooks->Check For Updates.  Intuit may still be updating the online site but you can download R10.  R10 includes support for 1099NEC.  R9 included support for Big Sur.

What a mess... is 2019 R10 compatible with Big Sur or not? This is insane that an application that is critical to businesses has such mixed answers from the vendor!

2019 R9? What are you reading? Your own release link has zero mention of an R9!

Hi Kane Brands LLC,

Thank you for joining the thread. Let me go straight to the point coz I see that this is a long thread.

As of the moment, only versions 2020 and 2021 are compatible with Big Sur. We're also waiting for news from our engineers about QuickBooks Mac 2019. However, we'll update the article you shared when there is a new release.

If you have other concerns, please don't hesitate to back to this thread.

I am confused: you say that 19 is not compatible with Big Sur and Tori says it is. You are both employees of QB so which is correct?  Thanks.
