Pressing Transaction List Crashes Quickbooks Desktop for Windows

I am running Quickbooks Desktop Pro Plus 2024 on Windows 11 (as a VM under Parallels on a MacBook Pro).  I am having trouble downloading my AMEX credit card charges. Specifically:

  • I press the "Bank Feeds" button in the menu ribbon. This opens a Window that says "Sit tight, we're fetching your data"
  • It then shows the "Account Information" screen where it shows my current AMEX balance (after it connects with AMEX) and a message that says "21 transactions are waiting to be added to QuickBooks".
  • When I press the blue "Transaction List" button, the screen changes to the one that would normally list all of the pending transactions. It shows a status message of "Please wait... We are working on your Transaction(s)".
  • Then QB crashes with an Unrecoverable Error.  The code is1407144908 17340.  I explain what I was trying to do, provide my email address and press "Send".

In the Report.xml file that it uploads with the error report, I see the following in the <ExceptionInfo> tag:

<ExceptionID>0xc0000005</ExceptionID>
<ExceptionDescription>EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION</ExceptionDescription>
<ExceptionAddress>0x00007FFAA53D6B3C</ExceptionAddress>
<ExceptionModuleName>C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\MSVCP140.dll</ExceptionModuleName>
<ExceptionInformationAddress>0x0000000000151000</ExceptionInformationAddress>
<ExceptionInformationDescription>READ Voilation</ExceptionInformationDescription>

This has been happening consistently for the past few months. I was hoping that recent updates would have addresses this problem so that I could avoid having to post this.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Experiencing issues with your transactions can really slow things down, Mac471. Let me provide you with information as to why you are having crashes when you pull up your transaction list in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) for Windows.

Possible reasons why you are experiencing unexpected errors due to the following:

  • Corrupted data files
  • Processing a large volume of transactions
  • Slow internet connection which affects data retrieval

To prevent this from happening again, please verify and rebuild your data. Regularly running the Verify and Rebuild Data tool can act as a proactive maintenance measure and help optimize performance by scanning and identifying corrupted transactions, discrepancies, and other data issues that might affect the software's speed and responsiveness. Also, please ensure to update your QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release to have an accurate report of your data.

To verify your data, here's how:

  1. Go to Window, then select Close All.
  2. Go to File, then select Utilities.
  3. Select Verify Data. If you see:
    1. QuickBooks detected no problems with your data—your data is clean, and you don’t need to do anything else.
    2. An error message—search for it on our QuickBooks Desktop support site for how to fix it.
    3. Your data has lost integrity—Data damage was found in the file. Rebuild your data to fix it.

To continue further, refer to this article about verifying and rebuilding data: Verify and Rebuild Data in QuickBooks Desktop.

Additionally, if you encounter data issues and damages on your company file, visit this article: Fix data damage on your QuickBooks Desktop company file.

Let me know if you have additional inquiries with transactions-related concerns, I'll be sure to address them in no time. Have a good one.

Thanks for your reply. I verified that my company file is correct ("QuickBooks detected no problems with your data") and I made sure that the software is updated to the latest version (Help/Update QuickBooks Desktop...): Product number: 953-332.

When I press the "Transaction List" button, I get the same QuickBooks - Unrecoverable Error. And the exact same Code: 1407144908 17430.

I've send the error report multiple times now to Intuit.

I thought about trying to disconnect and reconnect this AMEX bank feed but QB won't let me try this because there are still unassigned transactions.

Very frustrating for something that should just work.

ive been having this issue off and on all year. I've literally reformatted my entire hard drive, reinstalled the operating system, then reinstalled quickbooks in order to resolve this issue. it has just happened again (4th time this year) and  im dreading the process of trying to fix this. I did speak with a tech one time that couldn't get it resolved and then later said the problem was because I was using parallels software on a Mac. I've been a quickbooks user for 20 years now and I can't believe the software is so bad that I'm gonna have to try something else. very dissapointing how expensive this software has become while getting more and more difficult to use. I know intuit doesn't care but I just felt like venting. if anyone knows of other software that is comparable please let me know. i can't do this anymore.

Intuit never responded with an answer to this problem except to contact Customer Service - which I have yet to do.  The insinuation that the root cause of the problem is Parallels for Mac is just ridiculous.  I've been using the Windows version of QB the entire time (since 2012) on Parallels and never had a problem until now.  One hypothesis that I have about this problem is that something changed on the AMEX side (if you're running into this issue because of an AMEX link).  I'll definitely post if I get a resolution after speaking with Customer Service.

I will say that I do get the feeling the Intuit doesn't care about QB Desktop users anymore. It definitely seems like they want everyone to migrate to their cloud versions instead.

just giving you an update. nothing worked after trying every repair tool, rebuilding the file, verifying the file, and even reverting my company file back to an earlier version (before the problem started) etc. last night I deleted parallels and windows and did a clean install using the reset pc feature in windows ll. after windows was reinstalled, I installed the quickbooks software, opened my file and its working again. I really do think something in the quickbooks software is incompatible with the parallels software (probably put there on purpose by intuit). since ive done this 4 times already this year I know that eventually the problem is gonna happen again. therefor, I purchased a cheap pc today to just run the quickbooks software (I haven't used a pc since 2005). hopefully you get your problem resolved without all the problems Ive experienced. good luck

Install the trial version of QB Desktop 2024 Mac and convert your file from QB Desktop 2024 Pro Plus. Did you encounter the same error message?

Pressing Transaction List Crashes Quickbooks Desktop for Windows

Hello, I'm having the EXACT same problem! I recently purchased a new MacBook in September and updated to Parallels 19 and Windows 11 to run Quickbooks Premier Plus 2024 desktop edition.  I am able to update banking and as soon as I click 'Transaction List', QB crashes with 'Unrecoverable Error'.  I've tried repairing company file, updating QB, updating Windows etc.  NOTHING has worked so far! It's very frustrating as I have to manually update all of our company's bank accounts and credit cards.  Intuit keeps pushing all QB customers to online and has no support for Desktop users that now pay a yearly subscription for this software! VERY FRUSTRATING

I can't convert file and run QB for Mac.  Our accountant needs access to files as well and uses PC version.  I have been running PC QB via parallels since 2015 and have never had an issue until now

Thought maybe I should interject here. I've never had any issues running Windows QB Desktop on a Mac running Parallels until this year. And I've been using it since 2012.  I've tried multiple times (as recently as tonight) and I get the same application crash message. I send the error report to Intuit along with my email address asking for updates. Maybe someone at Intuit should be looking at these crash reports and coming up with a bug fix as part of the annual subscription fees that we pay.

Asking users to try using QB for Mac, re-installing Windows, re-installing QB, etc. shifts the burden of a QB bug to the user. Who has the time for all of this?  QB is supposed to help me run my business, not become my business to debug.

@Mac471 - FYI I don't think it's an AMEX issue but a QB problem.  I'm trying to connect with Bank of America and having the exact same problem as you.  I will be attempting to chat with Intuit tomorrow and will post again if it is successfully resolved.

Yes, you are correct. But believe me, they will say not to run QB Desktop Pro/Premier on a Mac. Running QB on Parallels is a workaround and they won't bother fixing any technical issues with it. If the bank feed feature is critical to your operation, you can try running it on the trial version of QB Desktop Mac. But you will keep using the current QB Desktop Windows for daily operations.

Well Parallels seems to think that you can run Windows QB on a Mac: https://www.parallels.com/apps/quickbooks/

As a software developer, I cannot imagine why QB would need to access such low level Windows API calls that Parallels cannot emulate. This is not some graphics intensive application that needs to access the GPU RAM - it's an accounting package.

I've used Parallels to run MANY Windows applications (MS Office, Tableau, etc.) without any issue.

It's becoming clearer and clearer that Intuit doesn't really care about their Desktop users - you can't sign up for a new subscription, but they are happy to take our annual fees as they push everyone else to the Online version.

At this point, I don't really care if the online banking feature works or not. I just want to clear the Transactions List.

Ok: TL;DR:  You don't need to install Parallels/Windows and QuickBooks to fix this problem - just QuickBooks.

Do the following if QBDT crashes on you when you press the "Transaction List" button:

  • Backup your company file to a safe place
  • In Windows, run the uninstaller for QBDT (to remove it from your "PC")
  • Open Edge in Windows and log into your Quickbooks account. Find the most current version of the software that you purchased and download it
  • Open the installation program and install QBDT.
  • Open QBDT and restore your company file from your backup
  • Click Bank Feeds, wait for the Transaction List to appear and then press it. The list of "pending transactions" will now appear and you can post them

I spent 90 minutes with Intuit Customer Service and we tried all of the usual stuff (outlined in the posts attached to this thread).  We got to the point where Customer Service said that I needed to email them my QBW file for them to fix - which for any number of reasons, I was reluctant to do.

So as she was trying to assist, I thought about installing a clean copy of QBDT on another computer. This was an iMac (Intel) running macOS Monterey 12.7.6, Parallels Desktop Desktop 17.1.7 (older version) and Windows 10 (older version). Turns out that this worked.

After the support call ended, I followed the procedure above on my MacBook Pro M3 Max, running Parallels 20.1.1 and Windows 11 - just to eliminate the "well it only runs correctly on Windows 10" possibility.  After restoring from the same backup file, it also worked.

So, what have we learned?

- QBDT/Windows does work on macOS (different versions, different chip architecture) running Parallels and on Windows 10 and 11.

- If you run into problems that can't be corrected by repairing your Company File, try to back it up, uninstall and re-install QBDT. Not the ideal solution but it beats having to install Parallels/Windows every time and certainly beats having to buy a Windows PC just for QBDT.

A few other notes:

- QBDT does not appear to support Bank Feeds to AMEX like they used to (you would connect and it would automatically download all of your transactions). I believe that only QB Online offers this capability.  If you want to use QBDT, you need to log into AMEX, find the transactions you want to export and then download them as a QBO file. Then double click on the QBO file from Windows File Explorer while QBDT is open and it will import the transactions for you. If I had to guess why this service was discontinued it is probably because the old connection does not support any kind of secure two-factor authentication (it just saved your username and password) and for whatever reason, Intuit and/or AMEX decided not to provide this capability to QBDT users

- I have a sneaking suspicion that all of these "updates" that are downloaded from Intuit's website create issues over time, either because the incremental patching process has bugs in it, the patches have bugs in them that have not fully been regression tested or both. There's an old saying in software engineering that says "debugging is the process of replacing old bugs with new ones".

Final comment for anyone from Intuit who is listening. Many of use DO NOT WANT TO USE AN ONLINE VERSION OF ANYTHING IF IT RISKS EXPOSING CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION.  Data breaches have become the norm now and typically, it isn't the company itself who is responsible but a "third-party contractor" that incorrectly installed a patch that led to a massive data breach.  So please, continue to invest in client-based software tools like QBDT and make sure that it is treated with first-class features.
