Join nowHey all,
I am in the process of migrating QuickBooks for one of our child companies to our datacenter. Ideally we would like to move and test prior to cutting over into Production. If we go down the path of moving QuickBooks, does the existing version still work and if so how would testing work in the new environment?
Thanks!
Bill
Glad to see you here sharing your concern with us, @Billard. Let me add additional details to better assist you in moving your files.
Yes, it will still work. You can access the files by moving them to another computer or accessing one file on the server and database (workstations) using multi-user access. The company file will remain unchanged in the old and new computer environments. You'll still have the same access as before.
If you move and restore the same file on the workstation computer, any new information added will be manually re-entered or imported back to the original server to ensure data consistency. On the other hand, using multi-user access allows simultaneous use of the same file across multiple computers, with automatic syncing of information. This setup requires at least two user licenses, depending on the number of computers involved.
You can check these articles for guidance in manually moving company files to another computer and hosting files using a migrator tool or multi-user mode:
Furthermore, you can also import and export data in QuickBooks Desktop if there are transactions that you want to put in your software.

Which QB Desktop year version do you need to migrate?
Desktop Pro 2023.
Running into another challenge. It is installed on a terminal server in one data center and I have no access to the usb drive to make the flashdrive needed for the move. At this point do I just download the latest software on the new machine and restore from a backup at the new data center?
Yes. Secure your backup file (*.qbb), install QB on the new environment, and restore the backup file.
Is there some place I can find a download for Desktop Pro 2023? I tried the online chat and they refused to help. All they wanted to do was sell me an upgrade. I just need to migrate the system as it sits today. Migration + upgrade introduces too many variables at once. If something breaks you are not sure where to go first.
