How do I ensure that my payroll is set up for electronic filing? How do I file for past quarters? If preferences are set up correctly why wouldn't electronic filingwork?

How was your day, @cnelson2.

I'm here to answer your questions about payroll and electronic filing in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

First, you can check your Payroll Settings to verify if e-filing is successfully set up.

Here's how:

  1. Open your QBO account, then select Payroll settings under Your Company.
  2. From the Preferences page, click on E-file and E-pay under Taxes.
  3. Ensure that E-pay and e-file is selected from there. If not choose the radio button beside that option, then select Next.

Second, you can file or submit your past forms manually to your tax agency. You don't need to worry since you can download the form from QBO.

  1. Click on Taxes at the left pane, then select Payroll Tax.
  2. Under Forms tap on the Quarterly Forms link.
  3. Choose the form you want to file, then click it to open.
  4. Select the desired period you want, then Preview.
  5. Hit the Download button so you'll have the copy of the form.

Lastly, I recommend reaching out with our Support Team so a representative can check why you aren't able to file your forms even if it was set up correctly. Also, they'll be able to review if the electronic filing was verified successfully.
