I'm also getting this error when trying to add personal use of company car and S-Corp Health Insurance to additional pay types. I've been chatting with a payroll specialist for almost 3 hours and they can't seem to get this done and frankly seem to have no clue what any of this means.  It was never this difficult with Paychex!

I'm also getting this error just trying to increase my salary due to a raise. I need help with this ASAP as payroll is coming due, and this check NEEDS TO be adjusted before that.

I'm getting the same error and it is making it impossible to edit/issue a year-end paycheck.  This is incredibly frustrating, a software that does not even account for things correctly as accountants.  When will this be fixed?????

Hey Marcus, yesterday I took the time to use the chat feature to help with support. There was no ETA on when the problem would/could be fixed, BUT they "added me to the list" of people to be "first in line" to be fixed, but more importantly for urgency, the person on support was ABLE to change the Employee's Salary to what I needed it to be changed to on their end so I could "move on" for now and quit "sweating." You might try that today for your urgent need. *fingers crossed that you get the same result that I did.*

I was able to circumvent this error and process bonus checks for my client by choosing the "Edit payroll items" shortcut from the Payroll overview tab. Under the Pay Types drop down, choosing "Bonus" allowed me to assign it to the employees who didn't already have that pay type available.

This error still needs to be fixed, but hopefully some of you can get your year-end checks processed in time with this method.

This is still an issue. I need to run payroll for the 15th but it's not looking like I will be able to update salary amounts. Ridiculous.

Hello, @MAG1378. Thank you for joining the conversation. I'd like to offer assistance in updating your salary amounts.

Before we proceed, could you please provide the exact error message you're encountering when trying to update your salary? Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

To address the issue, let's open your account in a private window and attempt to update your salary amounts again. This will help us determine if the problem is related to a cache build-up in your current browser. Simply use the following shortcut keys to access this mode:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N

If this works, clear the browser's cache to restart the system. If the issue persists, try using other supported, up-to-date browsers. Clearing the cache will reboot the entire system, allowing you to work with a clean slate.

If you continue to experience the same results, I recommend reaching out to our QuickBooks Payroll Team so they can conduct further investigation into the issue.

Once fixed, you can now run payroll to pay your employees

Please update me in this thread regarding the outcome of the troubleshooting steps. I want to ensure you're able to complete your task in QuickBooks. Have a good one.

The message just says "make sure all your pay types have unique names" when I try to update salary amounts for 2 employees. I haven't added or changed any pay types. I will try clearing my cache but it looks like this is an issue for multiple users.

Make sure all your pay types have unique names

The error message I'm getting is the same as the title of this thread - "Make sure all your pay types have unique names" when i try to update salary information, even though i haven't added or changed any pay types. I opened QBO in private mode, cleared cache, etc. Still have the issue. I work full time and use QBO for bookkeeping for a non-profit that I'm the treasurer for. I don't have time or opportunity to sit on the phone with QB trying to fix this issue. It's a known issue that many users are having. This should be a priority given that many organizations update payroll information in January. I'll try to contact the payroll team at some point, but at this point I guess I'll have to figure the payroll withholding out myself.

I was able to request a call back and the QB specialist did change the amounts remotely. However, this doesn't really fix the issue if everyone has to call to get things changed.

I was getting this error.  I went to Payroll, Overview, Edit Payroll Items, Pay Types, Salary, Edit on the Employee and was able to update Salary there.  This client has Auto Payroll turned on, so not sure if that has something to do with it. Hope this helps others.
