Destop is checking off wrong box on the 1096. When prining it checks the 1099-misc box instead of the 1099-NEC -  for  2023 filings.

Hello there, @DGentile. Let me help you resolve this so that the correct box will be checked when you print.

First, let's ensure that your QuickBooks Desktop file is updated to the latest version and payroll tax table for you to print your 1099.

Here's how:

  1. Visit this article: Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release. Select the Reset Update checkbox.
  2. Hover to Vendors, then choose 1099 Forms, then Print/E-file 1099 Forms. Create your 1099s.
  3. In the Choose a filing method window, select Print 1099-NEC or Print 1099-MISC.
  4. Specify the date range for the forms, then choose OK.
  5. Select all vendors for whom you wish to print 1099s.
  6. Select Print 1099. Select Print 1096s instead if you're printing Form 1096.
  7. Double-check your printer settings, then select Print

On the other hand, if the issue persists after updating to the latest release, I recommend contacting our payroll support. Your concern requires our assigned support's assistance, as they possess the necessary security protocols to access your account, which is beyond the scope of what can be done here in the Community space.

Moreover to adjust your print alignment, you can check this article: Fix print alignment of continuous-feed printers.

I'm available for further information and assistance on payroll taxes and printing 1099 NEC. Rest assured that I will do my utmost to address your queries accurately and promptly and to ensure your complete satisfaction with my assistance.

My payroll is up to date. It's a printing error on the 1096. 1099-NEC should be marked instead of 1099-misc when I'm sending NEC forms. I'm just using white out for now.

I am having the same issue and so are my employees.  The software is checking the wrong box.  On top of that, the check mark is not even close to the actual box (my printer alignment is perfect).  THE PROGRAM is the problem, not the user.  Please let support know they need to fix!!

Best regards,

Ben, CPA

I also reported the problem.

I am using a work around because I don't want to wait.  I have put a removable tab over the box it is printing to and then after it prints, I remove the tab and check the correct box.

Yes - thank you for that simple work around suggestion to use a removable tab then manually mark the correct box.  It should not be happening to begin with - but appreciate A USER'S suggestion for a quick and easy fix.

The IRS added an additional box on the line with the 1096-MISC and 1099-NEC to the 1096 Form and that is why the printer is not matching up with the box.

This issue does not appear resolved.  I just went through the update procedure and it did not correct the alignment of the "X" for marking 1096 NEC.  the "X" still prints in the 1096 MISC box, but below the checkbox...

the issue is not resolved...

I went through the described update process and the "X" is still appearing in the 1096-MISC box and not in the 1096 NEC box as it should.

Are we able to check the correct box in with a pen?

Let me help you resolve this so that the correct box will be checked when you print, TracyKonopacki.

The option to mark the correct box with a pen is unavailable when correcting the 1096 form. Also, the issue for QuickBooks Desktop - 1096 form printing alignment is off for the X that distinguishes between NEC and MISC and is already resolved. To resolve this, let's ensure that your QuickBooks Desktop file is updated to the latest version and payroll tax table for you to print your 1099. Here's how:

If the same thing happens, I suggest downloading and installing the QuickBooks Tool Hub. This helps fix common errors and you'll need to close QuickBooks to use the tool hub. You'll have to use Tool Hub on Windows 10, 64-bit for the best experience. Here's how:

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Download the most recent version (1.5.0.0) of the QuickBooks Tool Hub. Then, save the file somewhere you can easily find it (like your Downloads folder or your Windows desktop).
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install and approve the terms and conditions.
  5. When the installation completes, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub.

Once done, run the QuickBooks PDF & Print Repair Tool in the Tool Hub. Please follow the steps below.

  1. From the QuickBooks Tool Hub, choose Program Problems.
  2. Select QuickBooks PDF & Print Repair Tool.
  3. Attempt to print, email, or save as a PDF from QuickBooks Desktop again.

If the issue persists, I recommend opening this article to see the additional steps to fix the issue and start the following Solution 2: Troubleshoot PDF and Print problems with QuickBooks Desktop.

If the problem continues to occur, I suggest contacting our payroll support. Your concern requires our assigned support's assistance, as they possess the necessary security protocols to access your account, which is beyond the scope of what can be done here in the Community space.

Moreover, to adjust your print alignment, you can check this article: Fix print alignment of continuous-feed printers.

I'm available for further information and assistance on payroll taxes and printing 1099 NEC. Rest assured that I will do my utmost to address your queries accurately and promptly and to ensure your complete satisfaction with my assistance.
