Thank you for addressing the question of whether we will be able to opt out. I trust if we are able to we will be given that option by QB.
Hi there, ponymare6732. Thanks for following up about this.
I'm happy to hear Jen_D's response was helpful in finding the details you were looking for about opting out of a deferral option.
You'll be able to find information about updates in our What's New in QBO Archives.
If there's ever any questions, please don't hesitate in reaching out to the Community at anytime. Have a good day!
I'm not sure how you are going to "adjust" later - for our first Sept payroll - after the FICA taxes have already been sent in? Can you explain? Thanks!
Thanks for joining the Community, dannymctx.
Currently, the feature to opt out of deferring employee's Social Security taxes is being worked on by our Product Development Team. Once it's released, there'll be more details I can provide. Until then, you'll want to keep an eye out for in-product and email notifications.
Another place where information about the latest payroll updates can be found is our QuickBooks Blog.
If there's any other questions I can help with, please feel welcome to post a reply. Enjoy the rest of your day!
I do not use Intuit Quickbooks, but I use Intuit Online Payroll. I just ran payroll for my employees today ( for hours worked last week) , it did not ask first if the employee wanted to opt out or opt in for the deferral. It was not mentioned at all. It did not automatically opt in, it deducted ALL payroll taxes as usual. Which is a good thing, because none of my employees want to touch the deferral with a ten foot pole.
I hope that Quickbooks does NOT automatically adjust this, as Employers have the right to not participate, and we are not participating.
So has it been updated? I haven't heard anything and the only Payroll Update I've had was for Idaho.
@Charies_M wrote:Thanks for checking this with us, earlyowego.
We are aware of the new payroll tax cut announced by President Trump. The moment it is passed, QuickBooks will make sure to catch up and apply this change on our future updates.
Once the update is ready, we will notify you either through this thread, via email. Another way to be updated with QuickBooks latest news is through our QuickBooks blog.
Stay tuned for updates. If you have other questions, just let me know. I'd be happy to help. Have a nice day ahead.
WE COULD NOT FIND ANY INFORMATION FOR OPTING OUT OF THE DEFERRAL. OUR SYSTEM HAS UPDATED AND IS SET TO ZERO. WE WANT TO TAXES TAKEN OUT, LIKE NORMAL. PLEASE TELL US HOW TO BYPASS THIS.
-- FOLLOW UP: CLOSED OUT AND WENT BACK IT AND IT REPOPULATED. MAY HAVE JUST BEEN A GLITCH.
You can do your regular payroll processing, @CCAirAdmin.
Our compliance team is still working closely with the IRS for proper guidance. This way, we can implement this on our program and ensure you'll have the accurate payrolls.
Also, I want to let you know that the deferral of the employee's taxes isn't mandatory, and employers can decide whether they want to opt-in. The potential to defer the withholding only applies to employees whose gross pay for the pay period is less than $4,000 for a bi-weekly pay period (or equivalent for other payroll periods, e.g. $2,000 for weekly payroll).
For more insights on how to monitor your deferrals, see this article: Track your deferral payments for Social Security tax payments. You can also review this handy IRS FAQs to learn more about this order.
Please check out this article for more in-product updates about this: Latest payroll news and updates. Also, I encourage you to visit our QuickBooks blog page to keep with with the recent news and product enhancements.
You'll want to run some payroll reports in QuickBooks Online to get a glimpse of your business finances. They can be accessed through the Reports menu in the Payroll section under the Payroll section.
Please comment back below if you have more questions regarding this or any QuickBooks concerns. Have a great day.
I don't like the sound of this at all! I do NOT want the update!
This doesn't make any sense to me. Why did his update all to 0 then? What a headache this has been (and continues to be)!
I know I CAN, but I need to know HOW to bypass the deferral and have the taxes taken out like normal. None of what has posted has said HOW to get the taxes to repopulate. Also, I do not have QB online. I am a Desktop user.
I am a desktop user too and have been updating everyday for a while, but nothing has changed for me!! Am I doing something wrong? I see you said your payroll taxes were zeroed, but mine are the same!
Any advice??
Thanks, Kat
CCAirAdmin I'm glad you were able to get it to repopulate. That was very concerning to me that everything went to 0.
My system is supposed to automatically update but doesn't so I am glad I have to tell it to update now!
This is extremely unhelpful. This is a federal payroll tax holiday, so it has nothing to do with the states or state agencies. It's a U.S. federal executive order so has already been "passed" and is in effect. Intuit really need to get on this and stop saying check back and we're working it on it and we're here for you. Here for you would have rolled this functionality out on time a month ago for those wanting to opt into it. Instead, there are no answers and time's up.
How do you "catch up" on taxes that I as the employer have taken out of employees' checks and are now due to be paid to the IRS? That's going to be some neat trick on Intuit's part to make that happen. More likely, there will be no retroactive fix, which is why this should have been implemented a month ago.
Hello there, TheMaximus.
At this time, I'd recommend reaching out to our Payroll Support team. They have extra tools that can help you reschedule your payroll tax payments.
Here's how:
I'm just a post-away if there's anything that I can help. Take care!
I reached out to them three weeks ago and again today. Both times they were completely useless, and had no information except 'we are aware of the issue, working on it, will get back to you.' which doesn't work at this late stage in the game, with this deferral program going live over a month ago and Intuit's platform not able to allow me to defer payroll taxes, actively calculating and collecting them (without deferral), and reminding me to schedule a payment to the IRS for these now that Q3 is over. Which will presumably mean those payroll taxes once paid are not deferred and can never be.
This is for Intuit Online Payroll FYI, but this online support community seems to be the only one and all attempts to find a specific online help or community for Online Payroll just redirect here.
Received this email update on Thursday. Friday came and went with no resolution, of course.
We will have it established hopefully on Friday,we will keep you posted about this particular matter.Thank you so much for your continued patience!I really appreciate it.
Hello TheMaximus!
Thank you for posting back.
Yes, we have already created an article for it. Please check this out: How to set up Employee Social Security Deferral in QuickBooks. You can select the payroll subscription you have to see the steps for setup.
If you have questions, feel free to go back to this thread. Have a good one!
3 problems (ok, 4) -
1 - I was told to be patient and this information would be emailed to me - it never was. Whoever or whatever emailed me yesterday wasn't aware, said be patient, keep waiting. Maybe because this isn't available for Intuit Online Payroll.
2 - These instructions address every Intuit solution except the one Intuit forgot about that I actually use - it's called Intuit Online Payroll.
3 - Following along with the instructions for Intuit Online Payroll Enhanced, which seems similar but isn't what my solution provided through Bank of America is called, there is no option for deferral when looking at the employee's tax exemptions in Intuit Online Payroll. Only a tax exemption (not deferral, exemption) for SS and Medicare taxes.
Bonus - 4 - mid October is way too late to implement this. A prior communication with customer service said they will "catch up" and "make it up to me". How?
Hi there, TheMaximus.
I understand that you need to set up the Social Security Deferral. It's best to reach out to our Payroll Specialist again so they further assist you with it.
I'll be here if you need anything else. Stay safe!
I've reached out to them many times. They know nothing. They don't even know what the executive order tax deferral is. Your help article on the topic they referred me to says to contact my state payroll tax dept. (for a federal payroll tax issue? Ha!). They can't help. Here's there's latest responses:
Thank you so much for waiting on the line. I already pulled up the account here.

At this time, please do not do anything in the payroll systems on an employee or employer level to remove these taxes as there is no way to do this correctly. We will have something in the system once we have more details.
Intuit is in discussions with the IRS to gain insight into how this order will be implemented. When we have clarity from the IRS and can implement this change, we will do so. We will communicate again when we have an estimated date for delivery and will provide additional details at that time.

That doesn't work. This was rolled out weeks ago. And the system is now requesting I pay the payroll taxes. Once paid, they won't be deferred.

No worries, after the tax setup is available and ready, the previous checks will be just recalculated and for sure the EEs will be credited.

I also pointed out to another rep weeks ago this top help article on the topic you have in your help section is completely wrong, but it's stil there, unfixed and with no updates

Stop or defer payroll tax payments
Learn how to set up your payroll to track deferrals of the employer share of Social Security tax payments.
Under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, you may be able to defer a portion of your Social Security Tax payments and your payroll can help you track that amount.
Note: You're responsible for remitting payments to the IRS on the new 2021 and 2022 due dates. You can set up a reminder to notify you when the new payment dates are nearing.
Step 1: Contact your state about payroll taxes
Many states are offering extensions or waivers for small businesses affected by COVID-19.
Review list of states with known tax deadline changes due to COVID-19. Follow the instructions provided for your state payroll tax. In some cases, you may need to contact the state to request a waiver or discuss your situation and gain approval for late filing or payments.
If you don't see your state, contact your state's payroll compliance agency for the most up to date info, or to request an extension.
Step 2: Reschedule state payroll tax payments in your payroll product
Note: Not sure which payroll service you have? Here's how to find which payroll service you have.
Follow the steps for the payroll product you use. This feature is not currently available in other QuickBooks or Intuit Payroll Products.

It's still completely wrong because it points to states when this is a federal program. It also the first article that comes up when I use the help from my Intuit payroll and search for "payroll tax deferral"

That's what the rep said weeks ago and no update, no solution, and it's too late.
Taxes are due now. Time's up for a solution

Again it is not fully established and as much as we would want to make it happen or expedite it but that this is beyond our control.

So am I supposed to pay the federal taxes or not? Once paid to the IRS, I highly doubt they can ever be recovered. And that will be Intuit's fault for not timely implementing a solution

We will make it up to you

This is the only the least and the best thing that I can do
My apologies
