Direct Deposit Fraud

I wanted to post a message about a recent scam that we encountered. We received an email from an "employee" asking to change their direct deposit details. Not knowing it was fake, my coworker sent the blank form to be filled out. We got it back, changed the banking details, processed a payroll and the fraudster got my employee's money. We were able to figure out on payday that it was a fraudulent request. I'm working with my bank and the fraud bank so hopefully we can get this scammer stopped. That's not the end. We received another emailed request to change banking information but now we're on to them. This is something I've never heard about so I'm just posting to as many places that I can so no one else is duped. Lesson learned-verify before you act!

It is our top priority to secure and protect your account. Education and prevention are the best defense against security risks such as phishing, spam, impersonation of information, or fraudulent emails. 

 

If you encounter any security concerns, you can send them directly to our security team. This way, they can take action on it as early as possible. Proceed with the following steps:

 

  1. Go to the Online Security Center page.
  2. Click Contact Us.
  3. Look for Report a fake email (or phishing email) and click on it.

I am going through this EXACT same thing right now. In an attempt to fix- I changed the direct deposit information back to the correct information & re-processed the payment. My employee has not received any funds (submitted monday- not paid by Friday). Now I dont know what to do!

Allow me to join you here and offer my help with your questions about employee payments, ReneeStoutLCSW.

 

Direct Deposit payments are sent to the bank account that was used when the paycheck was created. You'll need to void or delete the transaction if it's still pending to stop the payments from being posted. 

 

If you're able to delete or void the paycheck before it was processed, it will be deposited into the correct bank. Please check out these articles for more details: 

 

 

If the paycheck was already processed or offloaded before the changes were made, you can submit a Direct Deposit reversal request. It's a process where the system will attempt to recover funds from an employee or contractor’s bank account by debiting the deposited funds.

I would also recommend reaching out to the our Payroll Support Team. They can take a look at the transaction and perform a bank trace to check the status of the transaction. Please go to this article to get their contact details: Contact Payroll Support.

This just happened with one of my client's. The OM sent over a direct deposit form to change the bank for the end of month payroll run and I immediately noticed the signature was just typed in the pdf and it was the person's full name. I contacted the OM and he didn't notice the signature, by had asked the scammer about the new address and received a reply saying the information was correct; and that he had moved and a new e-mail address. I told the OM do not accept any information without the original form and a real signature.

This happened to us. Our quickbooks account was hacked. 

 

We did NOT change any of the banking info. They got in to Quickbooks and withdrew two contractor payments at 10pm.  By the time everything opened it was processed overnight and we have to try to recover it. The bank accounts were already closed so we will have to now file a police report and hoping the police can help us track down the scammers. 

 

We have 2 factor authentication set up and alerted quickbooks immediately. I don't think the end user should be responsible and have to be the ones to lose the money when we did everything asked of us. I'd like to know everyone's thoughts. Quickbooks can prevent this. They require 2-factor authentication on ALL accounts. They can send a text confirming the money going out to the person. They can set up many options to prevent these things from happening so I think quickbooks can invest in a better back end system if they are going to process payroll. 

 

It may be too late for us but we agree doing everything we can to make everyone aware of this on-going problem with quickbooks payroll security. They can do more and should. I am now calling all banks that were on the receiving end of the payments and making them aware that the bankers on the other end of the account numbers are criminals. I will only get the info on the criminals that stole the money if the police can recover it.

I have reported 10+ DD scam emails numerous times to Intuit and received no response back or help from Intuit.  ADMIN: Stop offering fictional help!

 

After reading the above comments have decided to eliminate Direct Deposit to make sure my bank accounts are secure.  Can not trust QB to protect sensitive information.  This is a perfect example of why we always used the Desktop version of software.  Conclusion: BEWARE of allowing any software access to your bank accounts!!!!!
