We have always paper filed our client1099s due to the cost of efiling through QB. It is my understanding that depending on the number of 1099s it starts at 2.90 per 1099. However, as you are probably aware, IRS is requiring efiling if there is an aggregate of forms for one taxpayer in excess of 10. Does anyone have any suggestions about efiling outside of QB? Software that perhaps plugs in to QB? I have looked at the new IRS portal system (IRIS) and the upload of csv files. I called Intuit to see if there would be a way to export 1099 (NEC and MISC) to a csv file so we can upload. The rep had no idea what the IRS portal system is. Is there a way to export 1099 data? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I don't need instruction on how to file a paper 1099 - if you actually read my entire question it is regarding whether QB will be able to export the csv file into the template for upload to the IRS portal IRIS. The customer service rep I spoke to had no idea that a portal even existed for doing this (IRS implemented this in Feb 2023). My question to the community was does anyone have any alternative efiling methods for 1099s that may be more cost effective than using Intuit..

Currently, it isn't possible to directly transfer 1099 CSV files into the template for uploading to the IRS portal, IRIS. However, as an alternative, you can print the 1099s after creating them and use them as a reference when e-filing directly to IRIS for accurate and efficient submission.

We're using Efile1099now.com this year. I've used it in the past for one or two filings here and there so I manually entered everything. This will be my first year trying to do a data upload so I don't have personal experience yet. I was able to follow the instructions to convert the data to their template but I have some editing to do before I can upload it.
I can't imaging QB will tell us as they want us to use the vendors they partner with that charge the $2.50 and upwards for efiling. No way they will provide this since we'll be submitting for free via IRIS.
I may have found a work around. I installed the plugin for the tax1099.com efile service that is what QB used (if you choose efile when youare processing them through Desktop) and it installs a plug in that exports the data that opens up in the tax1099.com website. I went through the entire process to efile there and before hitting submit I downloaded the excel file. I saved the excel file as a .csv. It appears to be in the format that's pretty similar to the csv template the IRS uses.
I had to copy the headers from the IRS csv template and move a few columns around but seems to be a work around if you're willing to put in a little time for the formatting. That gets them submitted to the IRS free and then you can print the pdfs from the IRS IRIS site once submitted and mail those yourself to recipients. Still costing you a stamp but way cheaper than tax1099.com or other services.
I think you've addressed my (tangent) question, but I'd like to be sure. I have e-filed a 1099-NEC using IRIS. I still need to mail a paper copy to the vendor, right? And I can simply print out the one from IRIS and mail it as normal, right?
YES, you can mail the one you printed out of IRIS to the recipient.

Yes Lisa! I wonder the same. It 's frustrating that QB has not given an option and I have 60 plus forms that will need to now file manually by data input with each one.
I went to EFile for my 1099's and signed up for Tax1099 made the account and it took me to Webconnect because of the onboarding questions. Still working through it.
Heather10899 -- What was your final experience with the IRIS upload after you tweaked the export file from Tax1099? Did you receive an 'agency accepted' confirmation/something like that?
Next question -- what about your state filing for your 1099's? Pennsylvania requires e-filing if 10 or more, which I've ignored for a few years without any repercussions. But I'm assuming that IRIS does not have functionality to send to a state? (I know, wishful thinking.)

1099 upload worked with IRIS, but I had to reconfigure many headers and remove special characters not accepted by IRIS. The Web Connector got me a download file. After manipulations on Header Names, IRIS accepted with errors all the records. Now I have a report to correct errors with TAX ID and Name mismatches.
How the 1099Tax company would have gone through the trouble that I did, would not have saved anytime for me. I was happy I didn't use that service almost $3 per record to let file. While they would have sent out paper copies and state reporting if needed, I am glad I didn't sign up for the service.
There are data fields for State Reporting which I will use if I have to start back up withhold on the TAX ID mismatches. That is for another discussion.
In my situation, I had 40+ companies that needed to file 1099's, but each only had 8-15 or so to file.
I had major issues with running Tax1099.com from the link/button withing QB so I logged into their website directly using my web browser and it ran faster and I had no data entry or saving problems at all.
I did read a number of helpful emails for how to make the uploadable file for IRIS and Tax1099.com but I advised all my clients to print the 1099's on plain paper from QB for the information & then manually enter the information on the appropriate form in Tax1099.com
The ones I submitted this way, and all my clients' submissions went through fine.
Hopefully Intuit/QuickBooks will get a better process in place before next year. Their payroll data uploads to the IRS work very well so I don't understand why they haven't done the same for 1099's.
So so. I had some that no matter how many times I checked they said the csv file wasn't in the correct format (which I had cut and pasted from their template, so go figure). But most of mine went.
There is state reporting in IRIS, I am in Texas so I never clicked on the "state filing" section.
Downsides: There were lots of days especially closer to the end of the month that the site was so bogged down you couldn't get on.
This is only reporting to IRS, you still have to send to recipients and the formatting from the pdf the IRS produces of the 1099s doesn't fit in any window envelope.
Really towards the end of the month I was frustrated and just used tax1099. I agree with an earlier post, QB works well with IRS on payroll forms and I am sure they could get this to work too but I think they think of us desktop people as a PITA and wish we'd go away. I am sure they are in a relationship with tax1099 and that won't fair well if they offer us a free option.
