Hi there, @mmc41.

I've replicated this issue in my sample company file to be sure, and it allows me to click the Open Paycheck Detail button. Let's run some basic troubleshooting steps to get past this unexpected behavior.

To start, let's make sure your tax table is updated to the latest version. To double-check this, let's run Get Payroll Updates.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Employees menu.
  2. Select Get Payroll Updates.
  3. Select the Download Entire Update checkbox.
  4. Select Download Latest Update.

A window appears when the download is complete. Version 22022 is currently (as of 1/10/2020) the most recent payroll update. For information on what's included in the table, I recommend the following article: Latest payroll news and updates.

After that, close and reopen QuickBooks, then try to run payroll again. In the Enter Payroll Information window, select an employee, then click the Open Paycheck Detail button again.

I've also added articles about some tips when paying taxes, as well as FAQs on how to do it electronically:

Please don't hesitate to comment below if you have questions or need further assistance. Hoping this response finds you with a smile.

Hope this helps!

I had the same issue and I realized, if you:

  • hit the Check All button (see image - attached); the open paycheck details button - lights up!
  • Next, uncheck/remove the EEs you do not want to edit

This should fix your access problem.

Best,
