Hi there, @jon36.
Welcome to the Community. I understand that you only like to view your 1099. When your client has added you as a contractor to QB Online, you'll be invited to add your details. You'll also get a QB Self-employed (QBSE) trial version so you can submit and view your 1099's safely online.
Additionally, as soon as your client submits your final forms to the IRS, you can view and print your 1099 in the document section or by clicking the link on the email you'll receive.
For more detailed instructions on how to fill out your W-9 info, refer to this help article: 1099s in QuickBooks Self-Employed. It also includes answers to most of your questions about 1099 in QBSE.
Here's our helpful article for your future reference. Read through: QuickBooks Self-Employed Overview. It helps you learn more about the great features and what you can do in QBSE.

I am having the same issue. I don't even see a documents section. Where is it?
I have to say this is one of the most frustrating and annoying experiences Ive had trying to download a 1099. I've created my account and there is no documents area in my profile and no way to access a 1099. When I click on the link in the email from my client it asks me to sign up all over again even though I am logged in!
Maybe I am just missing or not seeing the documents area? Where is it?
Hi bonkgo,
We'll always want to ensure that you'll be able to successfully download your 1099 in QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE).
After your client submits the form to IRS, you'll be invited to your 1099s online. You can click on the link in the email you receive. Once done you'll be redirected to log in to your account.
The Documents section where you can access and print the forms is only available after your clients submit the form to IRS.

Please get back to us and let us know if you have any other concerns. Don't forget, we're always right here to help.
So essentially what you're saying is that your whole 1099 flow is broken because you send a notification in an email (View your 1099) but the 1099 is not even visible. Congrats!
