Simply open QuickBooks Online-

1 From the Payroll menu

2 Select Contractors

3 Then Prepare 1099s

If contractors are not added yet, add them first before going to the 1099 e-file flow. Once they have been added, you will complete the flow and you’ll be all set.

Thanks for checking in with the Community. I’d be happy to help you with creating an additional 1099. All you will need to do is go through the process of creating 1099’s, add your contractor and create. Here’s how:

  1. From Expenses.
  2. Select the Vendors tab.
  3. In the right corner of your screen, you will see Prepare 1099s.
  4. Once routed to the next page, click the Continue your 1099s.
  5. Follow the next steps for filing.

Do I have to file the whole batch again?  I cannot select one contractor in the Print 1099s.  The all come up.

I'm here to provide some information. In QuickBooks, you can file another set of 1099s after submitting the first batch.

 

To do this, go to Payroll > Contractors Prepare 1099s. Then, follow Step 3 and Step 4 in this article: Create and file 1099s using QuickBooks Online.

Thank you for joining in on the thread. I'll share information about filing an additional form.

 

You can create a 1099 form for the contractor you missed and a 1096 form together with that. The procedure is the same as how you created the previous forms.

 

You can also coordinate with the IRS to know the protocols for this situation and to make sure you don't get a penalty. You may also check the 2021 General Instructions for Certain Information Returns and find (Ctrl+F or Command-F) "Multiple Filings" to see more details.

I have already efiled 1099's but need to add an additional contractor. How do I do this?

I, too, have to add additional 1099s. Yesterday I submitted 2 1099s. So when I go through the process and come to the page to select "E-file Only" it shows forms being processed as 0 and for "forms submitted" it says 2 and it won't let me send any more 1099s. Why can't I submit more?

Filing additional 1099s is the same process as when you first submitted the first batch. 

 

To help isolate the issue, let’s perform some basic troubleshooting steps to make sure the issue isn’t browser-related. It’s possible that local internet cache files are the reason for this unexpected behavior. 

 

Let’s start logging in to QuickBooks using a private window. Here’s how:

  • Command + Shift + N (Safari)
  • Ctrl+ Shift + N (Google Chrome)
  • Ctrl + Shift + P (Mozilla Firefox) 

 

Once done, try filing your 1099 form again. If it works, you need to clear your browser’s cache. See Clear cache and cookies to fix issues when using QuickBooks Online for more information.

If you're unable to add more contractors in QuickBooks Online via a private browser, I'd suggest contacting our Support Team. They're equipped with tools to check the cause. It'll also allow them to submit a ticket to our engineering team to alert them about the issue if necessary.

 

Here's how:

 

  1. Click the Help (?) icon at the top.
  2. On the Assistant tab, click Talk to a human.
  3. Enter your concern in the Type something field, then click the send icon.
  4. Click I still need a human.
  5. Select Get help from a human.
  6. You can either select the Chat with us or Have us call you option.

 

I'd also recommend checking out our support hours to ensure you'll be assisted on time.

I'd like to help you file the second batch of 1099 forms.

 

Sometimes, unusual behavior in QuickBooks can be caused by a browser-related issue. To rule this out, you'll want to try the troubleshooting steps shared by my colleague MirriamM. You can check out the steps here.  

 

After the troubleshooting steps, open your QuickBooks Online account then go to Contractors > Prepare 1099s. If contractors are not added yet, add them first before going to the 1099 e-file flow.

Hi, just to confirm - when adding additional 1099s, you essentially refile all the ones already submitted, but this time you're including the missed ones? It's ok to file some of them twice? 

 

I already filed my 1099s, but just realized that I forgot a couple people (I forgot to click one account to include it). So I just redo my 1099s as if for the first time? I don't need to somehow take out the people who were already sent their 1099s?

  1. From the Payroll menu.

After you file your 1099s to the IRS with the steps above, we’ll notify you of your filings’ status through email. You can also check your filing status anytime and view previously field forms through your 1099 E-File account.

Hi Jessica, I understand the steps, they're listed several times in this thread - I just wanted to confirm that by following those steps I am refiling for several 1099 contractors. I just follow the steps as listed as if I'm filing for the first time and I do not need to make any adjustments for the 1099s I have already filed?

When you file the 1099s using the steps in this link, you’ll receive an email to check the status of the forms. All you have to do is log in to your 1099 E-File account to view the information. From there, you’ll be able to see the additional e-filed tax forms.

 

  • Not Submitted: You haven't e-filed Form 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC with the IRS. You can continue revising it.
  • Submitted: You have e-filed the form to the IRS. Note: If you need to revise it, you may need to file a manual amendment. Use these IRS instructions and form to do so.
  • Received by IRS: The IRS has received your form and is either processing it or has already processed and approved it. Customers who have submitted their 1099 E-File forms will receive a confirmation email approximately a week after the IRS accepts and confirms submissions. You may not receive this confirmation until the middle of January or later.

The option to only select one vendor is available on the 1099 E-file Service. Let me show you how:

  1. Click Workers.
  2. Choose Contractors.
  3. Select Prepare 1099s.
  4. Click Continue your 1099s.
  5. Follow the steps until you're prompted on the File option.
  6. Click E-file for me.
  7. On the 1099 E-File Service window, click Review your info.
  8. Select only the vendor's name.
  9. Enter your billing information and select Approve.
  10. Continue the prompts until you're able to Download and Submit 1099 Form.

Just a quick update: I went ahead and started filing 1099s as if it was the first time for the calendar year. A few steps later it acknowledged how many had previously been submitted and how many were new. It only filed the new ones and did not re-file the previously submitted ones.
