Good day, @gabriela-hernand.

I'm here to provide details in setting up Child Support in QuickBooks Online.

To begin, you may follow these steps to set up a Wage Garnishment:

  1. Go to the Payroll menu and then select the Employees tab.
  2. Locate the employee's name and then click the name.
  3. Under Does this employee have any deductions?, click the pencil icon to edit a deduction, or click Add a new deduction to add one.
  4. Select Garnishment from the Deduction/contribution drop-down menu and then choose Child/Spousal Support as a Garnishment type.
  5. Enter the garnishment details.
  6. Click OK.

Once done setting up, QuickBooks will only deduct the garnishment from your employees' earnings. Then, you'll be the one to send the check to the relevant party.

Additionally, I've added an article wherein you can learn more about garnishment: Compliance with wage garnishment orders.

Let us know if you have other questions about payroll. We'll answer everything for you.

once the garnishment is set up and taken out of the paycheck. What is the process to then pay the liability after each paycheck?

Thanks for joining the thread, @cnicoletti

A garnishment is the result of a legal proceeding that requires an employer to withhold wages from an employee's pay and remit the money to an agency or creditor.

Once you create paychecks, an amount will calculate and show on the paycheck as a garnishment. We'll set up the deduction for your employee within two business days after we received the order documents and email you once completed. But you need to remit payment outside the system.

After we set it up, you can see the garnishment in the employee's profile. For more insights, please see this article: Set up and assign garnishments.

Our doors are always open to help you again if you have any other concerns about wage garnishment. Have a great day ahead.

Good Morning,

How do you setup the Garnishment vendor whom you have to pay in Quickbooks Online (i.e. what account should it be mapped to?)? I want to make sure we are recording it right for taxation purposes.
