Payroll Summary by Class is NOT working

My payroll summary is correct until I have to break it down by class. I've spent countless hours on the phone with 'QB Support', which is a complete joke. This report has been fine for YEARS up until April. When I run a payroll summary for our entire organization, everything is correct. but when I try to break it down by class, it suddenly pulls up gross pay, agp & net pay all as the SAME AMOUNT. We have over 16 locations & each location needs to be accurate in this report. Does anyone have any clue what it can possibly be???? My quarterly reports were due APRIL 30th & continue to be LATE bc QB can't & WON'T attempt to fix this issue. I need to be able to break this report down by CLASS. We have almost 200 employees, so manually doing this with each paycheck is NOT an option. We pay for QB to save time. And it is doing nothing but wasting it. No one can seem to figure out what is wrong. We have verified our data, rebuilt our data, updated everything, screen shared with 'QB Support', sent in multiple tickets, spent hours on the phone with QB Support, just for them to attempt to give us incorrect phone numbers to try to get us off the phone. They continue to send emails claiming the issue is 'fixed'. IT IS NOT.

Payroll Summary by Class is NOT working

You've come to the right place for assistance, Windy. Let me ensure you're able to get the help you need about your payroll summary by class report.

With QuickBooks Desktop Payroll, all information entered when setting up your payroll will depend on the data on how you've set up your employee's payroll. As of the moment, we haven't received any reports relating to your concern. With that, I'd suggest reviewing them from the payroll center and verifying all the details entered accurately.

If the same thing happens, this might have caused data damage to your company file. Let's run the Verify Rebuild Data tool to help us identify and ensure payroll summary by class will reflect when running the report. Let us first ensure your QuickBooks Desktop is up-to-date. This way, you'll always have its latest features and fixes.

To verify the data:

  1. On the top menu, click File and select Utilities.
  2. Click on Verify Data.
  3. Select OK when QuickBooks doesn't detect any problem with your data.
  4. If Verify finds an issue with your data, you'll be prompted to Rebuild Now or View Errors.
  5. Click Close or View Errors and take note of the specific error message.

Next, here's how to rebuild data:

  1. On the top menu, click File and choose Utilities.
  2. Click OK if you receive a prompt to back up your company file.
  3. Select OK when the rebuild is complete.
  4. You can run the Rebuild Data again to ensure there's no error.

You can visit this detailed article for additional information: Verify and Rebuild Data in QuickBooks Desktop.

If you encounter any errors during or after these steps, please let us know in this thread.

Payroll Summary by Class is NOT working

@windyl0u  RE: When I run a payroll summary for our entire organization, everything is correct. but when I try to break it down by class, it suddenly pulls up gross pay, agp & net pay all as the SAME AMOUNT.

Do you mean that only the earnings appear in the class columns, and the deductions and taxes (or some of them) don't appear at all?

If so, it sounds like someone turned off the option to split up additions, deduction, & taxes by class. You can check to see if this is the case by going to Edit | Preferences | Payroll & Employees | Company Preferences.

Then check to see if the "Job Costing, Class and Item tracking for paycheck expenses" option is enabled with a check-mark. If not, the that's the cause.

Note that if you do re-enable it, your existing paychecks won't change. In order to get them to change you'll need to edit each one and make a change that causes it to re-calculate, such as changing one of the class codes in the earnings table, or changing a customer:job, and then save the check.

Note that as long as you leave the "Lock Net Pay" setting selected at the bottom of the check review window, the taxes won't actually recalculate, so the gross to net of the check will stay the same.

We are also running into the same issue. When separating payroll summary by class we lose data on deductions, add backs, and taxes. Please advise!

Payroll Summary by Class is NOT working

Thank you for joining the thread to notify us of your experience, Misty. I'll share some solutions to get the correct calculations of your Payroll Summary by Class report.

As per our Community Champion above, the main factor with this behavior is when the Job Costing, Class, and Item tracking for paycheck expenses feature is disabled. You can review your payroll preferences by following these steps to isolate the issue:

  1. Go to the Edit menu, then click on Preferences.
  2. Click on Payroll & Employees, then go to the Company Preferences section.
  3. Set your preferences and mark the box beside Job Costing, Class, and Item tracking for paycheck expenses.
  4. Hit Done to save the changes.

If the feature was disabled, the system never split up your items and taxes by class. To fix this, you can modify the existing or affected transactions to use the new preference when classifying classes to your payroll entries.

Payroll Summary by Class is NOT working

I have isolated the PR Class tracking issue to the update from Ent 2020 to 2023.  Prior to the update, with the Preference "Assign one class per Earnings Item" checked, the Class assigned to the employee carried to the Earnings Item Class.  It seems not to do so after the update.
