W-2 Efile

Is the Quickbooks efiling of the SSA copy a substitution for the new BSO W-2 filing?  It does not look like

Quickbooks will let you create a file or report to upload to the BSO.

If by BSO you mean this: https://www.ssa.gov/bso/services.htm , then yes e-filing W-2's from within QuickBooks sends them to the SSA and then you're done filing.

Let me add info about QuickBooks E-filing and the new BSO W-2 filing. 

 

To verify if there's a need to file a W-2 via Business Services Online (BSO), I recommend contacting SSA. They can give you the exact info you need. 

 

On top of that, a report that's tailored for BSO is unavailable in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). We need to manually run tax and wage summary reports. 

 

Here's how: 

 

  1. Go to  Reports and select Employees and Payroll.
  2. Select Payroll Summary.
  3. Adjust the date range appropriately.
  4. In the Show Columns dropdown, select Employee.
  5. Choose Customize Report tab, then Filters tab.
  6. In the Choose Filter section, scroll down to select Name from the filter list.
  7. From the Name dropdown, select the employee.
  8. Select OK.

On my payroll tax center the Automated Taxes and forms is set to Off ( which I will change for 2024) but how can I get the efile to send in my W2 to the state and SSA?

I can share some information about e-filing W-2s to the SSA and state through QuickBooks, @sawinland

 

You can create your W-2s and file them electronically with QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Enhanced. If you're subscribed to QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Standard or QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Basic, you'll need to file your state W-2s and W-3 manually by January 31 outside QuickBooks. 

 

You can e-file your Federal W-2s to the SSA and state by setting up the enrollment for e-filing from the Payroll Center. Then, create the W-2s from the Employees menu. Once done, you can now send us your W-2s to file electronically. From here, you can print your W-2s and send them to your employees or upload your W-2s to QuickBooks Workforce for your employees to view.
