extend requirement to update from QB2017

I am so frustrated with Quickbooks.  QB needs to push back their requirement to update to QB 2020 to process QB payroll.   I'm a volunteer treasurer of a small church.  we have 4 employees, 3 use direct deposit.  I was using Windows 7 with QB 2017.  We do not have an IT person.
Quickbooks required I update to Windows 10 by Jan. 31, 2020.
Jan. 23, 2020, I updated to Win 10.  things were going ok until March 2020 when excel would no longer open from reports, but I could do payroll and produce reports with pdf.  it was frustrating.
QB required I update to QB 2020 by May 31 or I would not be able to process payroll.
I purchased QB 2020.
April 19, 2020 installed QB 2020.  Installed ok but it won't open up.  I've spent hours on the phone with QB help desk April 20, 21 & 22.  no resolution.
the laptop has Win 10 ver 1909 - I have attempted to back out ver 1909 just to have it update again.
I have .net framework 3.5 & 4.5 enabled.  uninstalled QB 2020, installed QB 2020, does not open.

I have put on my personal computer QB 2017 with Win 10, ver 1903, so I could do April & May payroll.  I need the requirement to update to QB 2020 to be pushed out for months until QB 2020 will open with Win 10, ver 1909.

extend requirement to update from QB2017

Hi, novum.

I'd be glad to share and provide you the product system requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2020.

Before installing and using QuickBooks Desktop, it is important to know the necessary system requirements. This will ensure that QuickBooks is compatible with your laptop and will help avoid problems when you start using the program

Once done checking, you can start to download the installation file:

  1. From the Downloads & Updates page, select your product and version.
  2. If you don't know what version you use, see Not sure what version you use?
  3. Select Download.
  4. See How to Install QuickBooks Desktop ( for Windows) or check out this quick video.

After installing, it's best to update the QuickBooks Desktop release version to avoid program-related issues. You can go through this article for the detailed steps: Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.

If you're still getting the same issue, you can visit these resources for other troubleshooting steps:

QuickBooks Desktop doesn't start or won't open

Clean install QuickBooks Desktop

Let me know how the result of this troubleshooting in the comment below. I need to make sure this is resolved and you're back to running your normal business processing. All the best!

it is NOT resolved.  Someone SENIOR must be told of this issue.  QB 2020 is not opening on Win 10 1909 and Windows is not allowing me to go back to another version, in fact they just put out ver 2004.

There MUST be an extension for payroll users with QB 2017

I cannot process payroll and I've jumped through all the hoops.  we are a small church, no IT dept.

I don't understand why NO ONE understands the urgency of my problem with QB requirements.  I have spent over 40 hrs on this.  I am a volunteer not an IT person.

HELP  HELP HELP - extend the May 31 2020 deadline for payroll QB 2017desktop users until the problem is resolved.  We are in a rural area, poor internet service except in the middle of the night like now at 4:00 am.

I meet all the system requirements.  QB 2020 is not opening with Win 10 version 1909.

the requirement for QB 2017 payroll users to update by May 31, 2020 MUST be extended until QB 2020 will open with Win 10 1909.

I have spent hours on the phone with support with no resolution.

@novum

For the time being, you may have 2 options:

1. Run your QB 2020 on Win 8.1

2. Put your license and data files on an authorized QB cloud hosting. The cost starts from $30/month and you don't need to install anything on your computer.

At least, you have more time to let Support troubleshooting your current technical issue after May 31.

Really....  QB required me to update to Windows 10 by Jan 31st of this year and you're suggesting I change my laptop to Win 8.1.   I live in a rural area and do NOT have high speed internet access so cloud base is useless.

Quickbooks needs to extend the May 31st deadline to further out until QB 2020 works with Windows 10 ver 1909.   I've bought the required product and now it's Quickbooks turn to make it work.  this is so frustrating.  Quickbooks is for small business but you don't think like a small business.

Thanks for getting back to us, @novum.

You should be able to open QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) 2020 since you're already using Windows 10. To check if the issue is with the installation process, let's try to uninstall QBDT and rename the installation folders.

Here's how:

  1. Uninstall QB and follow these steps to display hidden files.
  2. Open the Windows Start menu, then search for File Explorer and open it.
  3. Locate the folder that holds your QB company files. This can be found in one of these locations (C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks (year), C:\Users\(current user)\AppData\Local\Intuit\QuickBooks (year), C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks (year), or 64-bit version C:\Program Files (x86)\Intuit\QuickBooks (year)).
  4. Right-click the folder and select Rename.
  5. Add the word OLD at the end of the name to prevent QB from trying to open it when you reinstall.
  6. Once done, reinstall the software.

To learn more about the process, consider checking out this article and proceed to Step 2Clean install QuickBooks Desktop.

Please leave a comment below if you have any other issues or concerns, and I'll get back to you right away. I'm always here to help. Have a good one!

I have done that process with QB support.  I have spent over 4 hrs on the phone each day for 3 days in a row.  there is a issue with the installation but it doesn't know it.  Win 10 v 1909 was opening QB 2017 fine on April 18th.  installed QB 2020 on April 19th, install looked like it went ok but it will not open.  was on phone with QB support April 20, 21 & 22 with no resolution.  They said to reinstall QB 2017 - guess what it won't open either.  So if the QB was installed & working and then Win 10 v 1909 is put on the pc and a NEW install is done, the product won't open.   I'm really stuck.  I installed the QB 2017 on my personal laptop with Win 10 v 1903, it is opening ok.  I don't dare change anything as I need to be able to do checks & payroll.

All I'm asking is for Quickbooks to extend the deadline for updating from QB 2017 for payroll processing.  I've purchased the product, I've jumped through all the hoops.  I'm a volunteer for a small church with 4 employees, none of which are IT folks.  This is really ridiculous that all I get is another suggestion.  It doesn't seem like anyone is understanding my delima.  I know everyone is trying to be helpful but I'm very stressed over not being able to use QB to pay our employees.  I can obviously  write them payroll checks but I can't use direct deposit and I have to do all tax prep/paying manually.   how do you let someone know of authority?

i had to install/open as administrator.  Thank you Maulik.   I would have thought that would have been on the install instructions or FAQ or would have been the first step help desk had me do.

I had to be logged in as administrator.  Thank you Maulik.  You'd think that little detail would be in the install instructions or FAQ or the first thing the help desk asks.  I'd also think the install would let you know install failed, need to logged in as administrator.

I had to install/open under administrator.  Thank you Maulik.  You'd think the install would have notified me it failed and I must do under administrator.  should be in install instructions, FAQ and the first thing the help desk checks.
