I have a .dmg file from QB 2014 that I am unable to export directly from the 2014 application due to a forced system upgrade. How can I upload the file to QB online?

It's great to see you here today, @mollie1

Converting a Desktop version to Online requires you to use the latest version of QuickBooks for Mac. If not yet updated, this might be the reason you're unable to export the .dmg file directly from QB 2014 to QuickBooks Online (QBO).

To help fix this, let's first download and install the free trial of the 2020 version. You don't need any codes to open it. Just click the QuickBooks Mac 2020 link through this article: Download a Trial of QuickBooks Desktop

Second, you'll have to restore the .dmg file on Mac 2020. This transfers the data from your 2014 to the latest version. Here's how:

  1. Double-click the .dmg file.
  2. Drag the company file and the Attached Documents Library folder to the folder where you’ll store the company file.
  3. Go to File from the top menu.
  4. Select Open Company to restore it.

For detailed steps, see the Restore a .dmg file section through this article: Restore A Backup

Third, you can import your data into QBO. Just go to File from the top menu, then choose Export to QuickBooks Online. For detailed instructions, check out this article: Converting a Desktop for Mac File To Online

Once converted, compare the Profit and Loss and Balance Sheet reports in QBO and QuickBooks Desktop for Mac. Just set the the date to All Dates and your accounting method to Accrual in both products. This ensures your data was transferred successfully. For more information about the next steps after the conversion process, visit this article: What to do after converting from QuickBooks Desktop for Windows or Mac to QuickBooks Online

You can also visit this website: QBO Help Guide. This link contains topics on how you get started and set up for success with QBO.

I'll be right here to help if you need anything else. Have a great day, @mollie1

@mollie1

If your Mac does not support QuickBooks 2020, call and ask Intuit Data Service to convert your file to QBO for free. Otherwise, you have to purchase a 3rd party migration service.

Just my 2 cents.
