No. That's not allowed for in the instructions, which read:
"Box a—Employee's social security number. Enter the number shown on the employee's social security card."
Why do you want to do this?
Welcome to the Community, @Karin.harrel.
I'm here to give you some insight into printing your W-2 with only the last four of the social security number.
Although this would be helpful for users like you, the option isn't available at this time. However, I recommend looking into this article about printing W-2's to see what options you have.
Should you need any further assistance, please let me know. I'm always here to lend a helping hand. Have a good day!
RE: Although this would be helpful for users like you, the option isn't available at this time.
It would? How would it be helpful? I can't think of a way it would be helpful.
I am asking for security purposes, for the ones we have to mail out. All the W-2s we mailed out in mid January are lost.
I think to be valid the copies for employees need the SSN just as much as any other, per the instructions. Do you see something different in the instructions?
I am looking for an answer to the same question.. Our Workers' Comp company is asking for copies of all W2s without social security numbers. We have never been asked to furnish these in the past.
Thank you.
Thanks for joining us in this thread, P_Wright at Yk2.
As previously shared in the previous responses, printing W2 copies without Social Security Number is currently unavailable in QuickBooks Desktop. Although, you can temporarily remove or delete the information in the employee's profile and print the tax forms. Once done, make sure to put them back in to keep an accurate record.
Here's how to delete a Social Security Number:
Follow the same steps for the rest of the employee. Let me share a couple of articles about printing W2s and other tax forms for more details:
I'll be around if around if you need anything else.
Has there been any change to QB printing W-2s with a truncated SSN? For 2020 W-2s, it's now allowed by IRS to instead show ***-**-6789 on the copies sent to the employee. I would much prefer that in case they are lost in the mail or emailed.
Thanks for posting and joining this thread, @LindaDG.
At the moment, the information displayed when printing W2 is still the same. QuickBooks will automatically generate the Social Security information once processed.

A year later....is the SSN able to be truncated on w2s issued for 2021 tax year? This feature should be available as truncating SSNs is permitted by the IRS and helps in efforts to prevent identity theft.
Good morning, @Tim W, and happy New Year!
Currently, the information @MadelynC shared is still accurate and there's no way to remove or shorten the SSN from your W-2s.

As always, I'm here if you have additional questions on this! Hope your week is off to a great start.
The IRS has allowed truncated Social Security Numbers beginning with the 2021 filings, that is over a year ago, why hasn't Intuit Payroll kept up with the Federal changes?

This is a feature that is well needed and which most other software providers have. I am surprised that Intuit stll has not made it available. We prefer not to mail documents with full ss# displayed.
I appreciate you for joining the thread, Thom.
I can see the importance of printing the Social Security Number with the last four digits only. At this time, the system still prints the number as before. For now, you can use the Feedback feature to send this idea directly to our engineering team. This way, they could take action to help improve your experience. Rest assured they're working nonstop to enhance the product and deliver the best experiences to all QuickBooks users.
QuickBooks always considers product suggestions based on the number of requests. The more users want this feature, the big chances it'll be part of future enhancements.
Here's how you can send feedback through QuickBooks:

Angelyn_T,
Thanks for the suggestion to post as a product enhancement, however, this is not a product enhancement that should be based on how many users want the feature. This is a feature that the IRS has now allowed and should be available in the printing of the W-2s. One of the postings mentioned that Intuit follows all IRS and State regulations. Well, the IRS has made this available, yet Intuit has not.
Has there been any change to QB printing W-2s with a truncated SSN? Will this feature be available for W-2s printed for 2022?
I would like to know this as well, especially since the double window envelopes Intuit supplies with their W2 forms, clearly shows the employee's SS# through the window on the envelope! This is unacceptable for our employee's security!!
Everyone check this before you mail them out!!
I would like to know this as well. Thank you.
Hello there, @cschlichting. Welcome to the Community.
I'll share some insights about printing W-2s with truncated or shortened SS Numbers in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), so you can file your payroll forms accordingly.
For the time being, printing W-2 copies with truncated or shortened Social Security Numbers (SSNs) isn't an option in QBDT. The system should still print them as before.
Furthermore, as per IRS, you may now truncate the employee’s SSN on employee copies of Forms W-2. But, do not truncate the employees’ SSN on Copy A of Forms W-2, W-2c, W-2AS, W-2GU, and W-2VI. For complete details about this, please refer to this article: General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 (2022).
Also, you may want to check out these articles as your reference in printing your W-2s and get answers to the most frequently asked questions about it in QBDT:
Please don't hesitate to keep me posted in the comments if you have other W-2 concerns in QBDT. I'm always here to help. Take care, @cschlichting.
