QB 2022 DB service breaks others and causing multi-user mode to stop working on all previous versions.

Hi Rubielyn_J,

I don't think you guys (Intuit) are understanding what the issue is. QB2022 works in multi-user mode... that is not an issue. The issue is QB2022 working in MUM when you also have other earlier versions of QB (like 2021, 2020, 2019) also running on the same "server", and trying to use them all together. Yes, if we un-install those other versions, it works. But that is not what we have been asking about!

In my case, I am an IT Consultant working for CPA firms where they support clients on multiple years of QB... so is this how QB is telling (forcing) their customers to move to QB2022. Seems kinda shady to me. Do you really have no other solution for us and the other 46,000 CPA firms in the US?

Thanks for joining this thread, @jadem. Let me provide additional information to fix multi-user issues.

We had to uninstall the prior version installed on the server computer. If the QuickBooks version 2022 is nowhere to be found after uninstalling the prior version, perform a manual clean install on QB 2022 to fix it.

Let's make sure everything is installed and set up properly. If needed we may need to reinstall some components. Aside from that, ensure to use QuickBooks Desktop version 2022 R3 for the multi-user to work perfectly.

If the issue persists, I suggest contacting our support team to check your account. They have the tools to find the root cause of your concern and find a fix.

Moreover, let me share this article to help set up a multi-user network so computers on your network can access your company files: Multi-user setup.

Fill me in if you have further questions about this matter. I'll be around to provide additional input to resolve your concern. Stays safe!

I think this thread deserves a little more elaboration on Your explanation....

Quickbooks tech support keeps referring to fully installing a fresh install of QB 2022R3 versions with dbm on our servers that are meant to only manage files and not to actually use the software on the server its self but to be used across the network with dedicated TS servers or workstations with installs of the software only without confirming or denying that only 2022 version will work in M/U mode.

There are at least two people in this thread that have already confirmed through independent testing that Yes 2022 versions will enter M/U mode if you fully installed the software and DBM on the machine where the files are located and set up the Data base manager to scan the folder locations where the files are stored.

DONE Its not a question anymore. Yes fully install software/ DBM on the machine that houses the files/ scan folder location M/U mode works for 2022 versions and 2022 versions only. Can I say it a different way to make that any clearer????

The questions being asked here are Will 2022 and the previous currently supported versions of QuackBooks work in multi user mode on the same network or not?

Many of us in this thread have spent hours on the phone wasting our time listening to a help desk individual communicate in the background to a senior tech, and get the same answer over and over and over and over to preform a fresh full install where the files will be stored... Yes, duh... read above again slow if it didn't stick the first time. WE GET IT, This fixes 2022 version multi user mode issues ONLY.

Once 2022 versions are installed in a manner described in this article over and over again, IT Does Not allow previous versions ei 2021, 2020, 2019 of quick books to work in multi user mode, it only allows 2022 to to be used in multi user mode.

So is it possible to use 2022, 2021, 2020  all on the same network in M/U mode or not.

No one wants to waist another minute on this topic sitting on the phone with some under informed help desk member.

QB 2022 DB service breaks others and causing multi-user mode to stop working on all previous versions.

Hello, all.

I understand how important that all versions of the QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) are working with a multi-user mode while the QBDT 2022 was installed on a server.

There are several reasons why the multi-user mode isn't working. One of them is the folder permission may not be set up properly. Let's make sure QuickBooks has the right level of access to avoid problems when working with the company file over the network. I'll show you how.

  1. Locate and right-click the folder you want to share.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. On the Sharing tab, click Share this folder.
  4. Go to the Security tab, then choose Permission to set permissions for each user who will access your folder.
  5. Once done, hit Apply and then OK.

Check out this resource for more insights: Set up folder sharing.

If the issue persists, you can reach out to our QuickBooks Desktop support. They have the tool to do screen sharing to do further troubleshooting steps to fix this.

In addition, you may review this article as a reference for alternative steps to take in resolving the multi-user mode issues: Clean install QuickBooks Desktop.

I'll be glad to help you again if you have more questions about the multi-user mode. Just add the details in the comment section.

QB 2022 DB service breaks others and causing multi-user mode to stop working on all previous versions.

Hi Giovann_G -- thanks for reaching out.

First, I will need to re-install QB again to see if that solves it -- I don't know if others have tried that, but usually the function of folder sharing is handled by QB and the DB manager -- is this now different functionality in QB2022?

I did reach out to support -- they were not helpful. They said to uninstall all versions of QB and then just re-install QB2022. That is not an acceptable solution, obviously. It isn't that QB2022 doesn't work. And the tech I spoke with also said that you guys had solved the issue ????

Ditto the clean uninstall -- that requires you to uninstall everything first -- and that is what we want to avoid (unless doing that solves the issue and then we are able to re-install the other versions, but based on other posts -- that doesn't work...)

Has Intuit successfully run QB2022 in MUM on a computer that is running other versions of QB (i.e. 2021, 2020, 2019). Please confirm -- and if there is a special configuration, please point us to that technote... there are a lot of smart people out there trying to get this to work that are having the same issue I am.

Thank you.

Thanks for sharing an update with us, @John_K, and @Kershinator.

Allow me to chime in and provide additional insights on how to isolate this issue.

You can work with multiple versions of QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) in multi-user mode. However, accessing the same company file on the same server isn't feasible. You'll need to run the same version of QBDT to access the file.

Let's say the file is from QBDT 2022, then you're using a recent version of QBDT. Though they are on the same server, accessing the file isn't possible. You'll have to use the same version to open it. This is because QuickBooks creates a new Windows user for each version of Database Server Manger. You can check out this link for the complete details and additional troubleshooting steps: Install QuickBooks Database Server Manager.

Furthermore, you'll want to ensure your recent version of QBDT is up-to-date. This way, they are paired with the QBDT 2022 updates and are feasible when in a multi-user mode once you've installed the 2022 version.

In case you want to learn some tips and tricks in effectively managing your QBDT, you can always visit our QuickBooks Support page for reference.

If you have any other follow-up questions about multi-user in QBDT, please don't hesitate to leave a reply. I'll be here to assist you. Wishing you more success in your business!

QB 2022 DB service breaks others and causing multi-user mode to stop working on all previous versions.

I do not think you understand. Please allow me to clarify

Users would not be using different versions of QuickBooks for the same file

Users need to use different versions of QuickBooks for DIFFERENT files.

We have hundreds of quickbooks files for clients in many different years and versions

For example: CPA firm has three clients

Company A uses QuickBooks 2021; we need to use it in multi user mode.

Company B uses QuickBooks 2022; we need to use it in multi use mode.

Company C uses QuickBooks Enterprise 20.0; we need to use it in multi user mode.

Once we properly install QB 2022 for multi user application, the multiuser mode is no longer allowed in QB 2021 or earlier versions.

Is there a fix for this?

Hello JasroV,

Can the QB 2022 data files co-exist with other files from other years (2021, 2020) on the same "server" that supports multi-user mode?

We are not trying top open a 2022 files with something than 2022. Nor 2021 files with something other than 2021.

Maybe you guys need to get someone from your Engineering team to look at all these discussion threads.

Please!

QB 2022 DB service breaks others and causing multi-user mode to stop working on all previous versions.

I'll share additional troubleshooting steps, Leahkershner1103 and John_K.

To answer the question is yes, QB 2020 co-exist with other versions on the same server and support multi-user mode.

QuickBooks Database Server Manager allows sharing the company files with other computers on a server. May I know if you install the server only or the full program option? Any information will help me identify the best course of action for resolving multi-user mode issues.

On the server PC, the full program option refers to installing the full version of QuickBooks Desktop and the Database Server Manager. Since you host different versions of QuickBooks Desktop on your server, you'll have to install them from the oldest version first and up to the most recent. For each version of Database Server Manager, QuickBooks creates a new Windows user. For example, Data Server Manager 2019 shows up as QBDataServiceUser29.

As I've stated above, folder permission is one of a few reasons why the multi-user mode doesn't work. If folder permission is set up correctly, let's configure each Database Server Manager. I'll show you how.

  1. Open the Windows Start menu.
  2. Type “Services” into the search and open Services.
  3. Select and open QuickBooksDBXX (XX is the version number).
  4. Go to the General tab and find the Service status section. If it's Started or Running, click Stop.
  5. From the Startup type dropdown menu, select Automatic.
  6. Go to the Logon tab. Select the Local System account option.
  7. Click the Recovery tab. choose Restart the Service from each of these dropdown menus: First failureSecond failure, and Subsequent failures.
  8. Go back to the General tab. Hit Start to restart Database Server Manager.

If the issue persists, continue with the rest of the steps in this article: Install QuickBooks Database Server Manager.

I've also added this resource in case you've encountered errors H202 or H505: How to fix Error H202 and H505.

- I have tried it both ways -- neither way worked.

- Have you -- in your lab -- installed 2020, 2021 and 2022 all together on a single machine? Please see the attached file/screen snip. Why did QBDM 2022 not show here? Is it a 64bit vs 32bit issue?

jfc...

Dude...Seriously??? This has been covered I feel like i'm in a circle jerk.

Yes 2022 was installed fully on File server. I can open the full version of 2022 software on my File server. Pointless... but yes its installed that way.

Yes QuickbooksDM32 service is installed and running and set to auto start

Yes all other years of the QuickbookDB 31,30,29,28,27,26,25, &24 versions are running and set to auto start

Yes QFCM Monitor service is running and set to auto start as well

Yes User 32 was created and added to the permissions on the folders and files the same as all previous years.

Yes DB32 shows up in the Quickbooks data base manager interface as running.

Yes Local user have full permissions to all folders and file where the QB files are stored on said data server.

NO there are no other versions of the QuickbooksDBxx services running anywhere on the network besides the one data server with all years of DB services started and running.

Now that we have gotten back to several weeks ago... Why when 2022 is installed PER QB Tech support instructions does it only allow users to open files that were created or upgraded to 2022 version year?

If I have Another file in Another version year like say 2021, if I open that 2021 file in QB 2021 Enterprise accountant, it WONT go into Multi user mode even though it did before I installed 2022. Same if its 2020, 2019 ect.

As soon as I uninstall QB 2022 from my File server... Multi user mode works again for all previous years...

WHY does 2022 break multi user mode for all years except 2022?

Thanks for the prompt reply, @John_K, @Kershinator

Allow me to chime in and share additional information about the QuickBooks Database manager. For now, the QuickBooks Desktop 2022 will only work with the 2022 QuickBooks Database manager.

Also, Kershinator is correct that if you will install the 2022 database manager DB32, it installs in 32bit even though it's a 64-bit installer. To get this fixed, you'll have to get the 64-bit Database manager you have to install the whole GD program along with the database manager in order to install the 64 bit QuickBooks database manager DB32 (64-bit).

Since you're not seeing the Database version for 2022, you'll have to make sure that QBDT is updated as my peer suggested above. Just click the link on how to update the file.

I'd also suggest getting in touch with our Customer Support Team again. They can provide further assistance about this matter and create an investigation ticket for the QuickBooks Database manager. Just click this link for reference: Contact QuickBooks Desktop support.

Thanks for the reply Joesem M,

So to be clear yes we had the 2022 R3 64 bit version of the DB32 (64) installed and only files for the 2022 version will go into multi user mode after it is installed correctly.

When Any file that is not upgraded to 2022 versions of QB is opened in older versions such as 2021,2020, ect, These files will not go into multi user mode but as said earlier the 2022 files will.

If you only install the DBM for 2022 it does not allow 2022 or any other year to go into multi user mode when the DB32(32-bit) DBM is installed.

So... How do we create a ticket on this? Please dont say call tech support....

I got on and got some real answers from them. The issue this is occurring is because 2022 is 64 bit and not 32 bit like the previous versions. They said it is not possible to host 2022 and any previous version on the same server. The only workaround would be to setup a separate DB Manager for 2022 on another server and let the current server run the 2020 and 2021 versions. Of course the files would also need to be hosted on the other server to allow it to work. They had to upgrade to 64 bit but they should have came out with 64 bit versions of 2021 and 2020 so they all work or find a way to make it compatible with the 32 bit versions

Hello, LKBowersox.

Thanks for chiming in, and I'll give some updates about the investigation case and ensure you'll be able to use the multi-user mode properly.

I checked the status of INV-63789 and I see that the Database Server Manager issue is already fixed.

The patch was rolled out in the recent update  for QuickBooks 2022. If you've already installed QuickBooks 2022, make sure to get the latest release. Then, run QuickBooks Database Server Manager and ensure all of your workstations are working.

If you're still getting the issue, we'll want to clean uninstall and reinstall QuickBooks Desktop. We can download the installer here (Pro Plus): https://downloads.quickbooks.com/app/qbdt/products.

After downloading the installer, we'll want to run it as an admin and proceed with the installation steps.

If we haven't reinstalled it yet, we can get the Server Manager's latest version here: Install QuickBooks Database Server Manager.

Run the installer and open the Server Manager as an admin.

If you're still on the process of getting QuickBooks 2022, make sure to install the latest release updates when prompted.

After upgrading to QuickBooks 2022 with the payroll module, do you need to check your employees' data? We can run a summary report to do this. Let's use this article as our guide: Create a payroll summary report.

Don't forget to visit the Community space again if you have questions regarding the features in QuickBooks 2022. If you have questions regarding your payroll service, let me know the details and I'll gladly help you out.

QB 2022 DB service breaks others and causing multi-user mode to stop working on all previous versions.

Short answer is no.

So don't listen to the help desk nitwit that only answered the first part of your question as they all seem to do for some dumb reason...

Multi-user mode doesn't work for any Previous years if 2022 Data Base Manager is installed and they don't seem serious to fix it, Just show me the money!!!!!

What they fixed in that investigation was the 64 bit Data Base Manager not installing originally. The installer would install a 32 bit DBM that didn't work for any versions including 2022 and ironically still exists in the installer package which is why they have to give such long detailed instructions on how to properly install it to make it function for 2022 only.

They wont even open a new case on this and it was like pulling teeth to get any of the QB tech guys to acknowledge that the issue exists.

Some of the other IT guys in this thread and my self have tested this 10 ways to Friday. No Go.

The only way to keep previous versions of the QB software's Multi-user mode functioning is to not install the 2022 Data base manager at all or uninstall it if its installed. This means all previous years will be able to open in Multi user mode but 2022 will not.

It would be nice to pay so much money for software and have it not kill other version of supposedly "Supported" software.... But that's Soooo 2010......

Unfortunately, I am unable to test this either at the moment. I just got the one client up and running smoothly with a Virtual Machine setup as the QB 2022 DB Server while their current server is running all the previous years. I cannot risk taking them down again to test an issue that QB should publicly come out and say if it fixes the issue or not.
